Lake Tahoe will not be affected by PG&E public safety power outage
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/08/2019 - 1:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Cali. - To reduce wildfire risk during the forecasted severe wind event in California west of Lake Tahoe, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) will implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff in parts of northern, central and coastal counties of the state, but not in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
PG&E expects to begin turning off power later Tuesday night, just after midnight.
Prescribed fire above Caples Creek continues to send smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin

Students ready to start first full week back at Sierra House Elementary

"It is so good to be back!" said Principal Karin Holmes. "The kids are doing great and the staff is so happy to be back in their classrooms. We are getting organized and enjoying being home. Our staff and students did not miss a beat in the transition back to Sierra House."
The school's annual Walkathon fundraiser is Friday, October 11.

Widespread freezes will occur Thursday and Friday mornings. Next weekend should be mild and dry, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Warm fall temperatures on tap for Monday after a cool morning with light winds. It begins to change Tuesday with increasing winds ahead of a strong, dry cold front. Some lake concerns are possible with the stronger winds.
South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby a success

This was the 17th year the Moose Lodge has hosted this free event for children in the Lake Tahoe area.
Registration began at 8:00 am and wrapped up at 2:00 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, sodas, and water were provided free to all registered children.

South Lake Tahoe bank robber faces long prison term after pleading guilty to 19 robberies
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/04/2019 - 10:21pmAn Oakland, California man pleaded guilty to being a serial bank robber who committed 19 heists across the Bay Area and Northern California, including South Lake Tahoe, between March 2018 and February 2019.
Duane Kurt Makela, 50, pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco Thursday to ten armed bank robberies, seven unarmed bank robberies, and two attempted bank robberies.
Small earthquake 36 miles southwest of South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/04/2019 - 9:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of Nevada Reno's Seismological Lab is reported a 3.28 magnitude earthquake 36 miles SSW of South Lake Tahoe.
At 8:55 p.m., the earthquake occurred at a depth of 360 meters just off SR88 west of Lower Bear River Reservoir.
Earthquakes are not uncommon for the Sierra.
No other information is available at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Clean Tahoe is hosting an event on Thursday afternoon with South Lake Tahoe native and Olympian Jamie Anderson, Don't Talk Trash - Pick It Up Scavenger Hunt.
On October 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., join the community at Lakeside Beach and participate in a trash pick up. Be at the beach at 3:30 p.m. to get supplies and scorecards. The fun begins at 3:50 p.m. and all have exactly one hour to clean the beach and neighborhood. Prizes will then be handed out.
No need to RSVP, just show up and have fun while helping the environment.

Dry conditions with light winds are expected through the weekend. Light winds ill prevail on Wednesday with increased winds Thursday. Wind gusts could reach around 25 mph Thursday afternoon across valley locations across the Sierra and western Nevada with 40-50 mph possible along Sierra ridgetops.

Sierra House Elementary opens fully on Tuesday

Families, students, and staff got the good news Monday.
"The kids and staff are thrilled to be back," said Lake Tahoe Unified School District Spokesperson Shannon Chandler. "It's like a second home so I imagine that everyone is relieved and comforted to be back."

Though the exact date is yet unknown, Principal Karin Holmes sent a letter to parents to give them the much-awaited news.
Belfor Construction is finalizing construction in the multi-purpose room while mantenance and custodial staff are wiping down dust, cleaning carpets and bathrooms, and testing will be conducted on water, HVAC and fire systems.

Red Flag Warning for western Sierra and Nor Cal valley, PG&E begins safety shut-off

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, PG&E began turning off power for safety to about 24,000 customers in portions of Butte, Nevada and Yuba Counties. By approximately 8:00 p.m., PG&E had completed the task of turning off power for public safety to about 24, 000 customers in the Sierra foothills. Power will remain off until weather conditions improve and it is safe to restore service.
South Lake Tahoe receives $1.46M SAFER grant to fill 7 new firefighter spots

In an announcement of Round 4 awardees, South Lake Tahoe was named a recipient.
Funds will go to hire seven new firefighters in preparation for opening Fire Station 2 in the Al Tahoe neighborhood.

For the last ten months, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) site has opened the doors on the space they rent from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and shared with students during the school day.
BGCLT are scheduled to break ground next Spring on a new "clubhouse" that will be built next door, but in the meantime they share each room with staff and students from Sierra House.

Sierra House not ready for all students; Al Tahoe to remain open
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/10/2019 - 11:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary started their first day of school Monday, nine months after a fire caused significant damage to the building and moved students to other locations as work was completed to remove all damaged material and rebuild the inside.
Excitement about the return has been shortlived and shadowed by issues causing authorities to move many of the students back to Al Tahoe Elementary for classes until issues can be resolved on the campus.

For those wondering about the old Caltrans traffic camera at the Y: it is being replaced and when received there will be a lane closure coordinated for installation.
The camera at the new roundabout in Meyers can be rotated to analyze traffic needs and will not be aimed just at the roundabout for the time being.

When a fire damaged the school in November 2018, little did anyone know that it would take almost 10 months to reopen.

To help spread the message, a new website has been launched, TahoeBears.org, where residents and visitors can go to learn everything they need to know about living, visiting and playing responsibly in bear country.

Students at the South Lake Tahoe school were unable to start classes on August 26 with the rest of the kids in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) after their school was not ready after a fire caused major damage on November 11, 2018.

September 21, 2019 (All day) Join Clean Tahoe on Saturday, September 21st from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Cove East for a cleanup along the Truckee River, followed by a beach picnic. Volunteers can meet at the Cove East trail (to the right of the entrance to the Keys Marina)and pick up trash on foot, or launch your kayaks behind Motel 6 and pick up litter on the river banks from the water. Red Flag Warning in place for areas west and east of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/27/2019 - 11:18pmThe National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Wednesday, August 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Carson City and the portion of Douglas County in the valley. Also under the warning are other portions of Western Nevada, the Eastern Sierra and the west slope of the Sierra.
The Lake Tahoe Basin does not fall into this warning.
The Red Flag Warning is for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/25/2019 - 6:01pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As we head into the Labor Day holiday, temperatures will be well above normal through the upcoming week, with the warmest conditions most likely Tuesday. Dry conditions are likely to prevail through the week except for a chance of thunderstorms near the Sierra crest on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Monday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 50. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
