Prescribed fires resume around Lake Tahoe

Lake Valley, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue Lake Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks, weather permitting. Operations are scheduled to take place at or near D.L. Bliss State Park, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort area, Glenbrook, upper and lower Kingsbury Grade and south and east of the Lake Tahoe Airport.

Blue Ribbon Award winners announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The winners of the 10th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Over 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor outstanding South Shore businesses, organizations and individuals for civic contributions, tourism experiences, customer service and entrepreneurial achievements.

Lake Tahoe ski areas planned opening dates

After a winter of historic snowfall and atmospheric rivers, what will 2017-18 have in store?

That has yet to be seen, but many resorts around the Lake Tahoe Basin are making plans for opening even without that "one good dump."

Lake wind advisory as next storm moves into Lake Tahoe Basin

The Sierra is at average precipitation for this date, below last year's epic winter at this time, but its still early. Will a storm system heading to Lake Tahoe be enough to put those totals higher?

Probably not this storm. It brings with it strong winds but not much snow or rain.

Plates for Powder campaign returns

LAKE TAHOE – Ski season is almost here, and with it returns the popular “Plates for Powder” program. Individuals who purchase a new Lake Tahoe license plate in either California or Nevada can receive free lift tickets to one of eight Lake Tahoe resorts participating in the program. With snow heading to the mountains soon, now is the time to buy a Tahoe license plate so you can ski for free in Tahoe.

3rd annual Blizzardfest Pray for Snow Party

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Blizzardfest 2017 returns to the South Shore on Saturday, November 4 at noon at the Tahoe Beach Retreat's 3rd annual Pray For Snow Party. Even if it is snowing, join in the fun to encourage another strong winter.

All of the fun will be under the tent on the beach until 10:00 p.m. Not only is the public invited, but so are four-legged family members.

Dr. Jeffrey Orr returns to South Lake Tahoe as Barton's newest surgeon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health announced today that Jeffrey Orr, MD, has returned to his hometown of South Lake Tahoe to join its network of talented orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Orr received his medical doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He conducted his orthopedic surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his fellowship training at the University of South Florida. He’s an affiliate of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Possible changes to Herbert Avenue discussed at public meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the addition of Bijou Marketplace along Highway 50 between Ski Run Boulevard and Herbert Avenue, owners of nearby properties have started to look at how this new development will help their businesses.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe opens for two days of skiing and riding

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe will offer a little tease of skiing and snowboarding as they open for two days, Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28. They are the first Lake Tahoe area resort to open this season.

There will be limited terrain available for skiing and snowboarding. Mt. Rose will offer access to one beginner ski trail accessed by the Wizard chairlift from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. both days. Lift tickets will be available for $20 for guests ages 16+, and $10 for children ages 15 and under.

Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows plans base-to-base gondola to open by 2019

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows formally announced its plan to install a base-to-base gondola connecting The Village at Squaw Valley and the base area at Alpine Meadows today. The freshly branded “California Express” gondola is targeted to open ahead of the 2019-20 winter season. The connection of these two mountains will realize the long-held dream of the pioneers who brought the sport of skiing and the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley nearly 60 years ago.

Six Jewish Debates coming to Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe man charged with burglarizing pizza restaurant

A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on charges he allegedly burglarized the Lake Tahoe Pizza Company on October 9, 2017.

At 10:00 a.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to an alarm at the popular restaurant located at 1168 Emerald Bay Road. Upon arrival they learned someone had gained entry through a window and left through a door, and that cash was missing.

Video surveillance showed them a suspect.

During Fire Prevention Week each year, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds their Open House to highlight fire safety in the community as well as opening their doors for tours and activities.

To involve the community and get their opinion, the City of South Lake Tahoe is holding a public meeting at the Senior Center on Wednesday, October 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The "Herbert Avenue Circulation Study" is looking at possible alternatives to the current configuration.

South Lake Tahoe activities during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Sass Talk: VHRs, Martin Hollay and Yes on C

On Tuesday, a majority of city council agreed on a revised VHR (Vacation Home Rental) ordinance. In two weeks we will vote on the first reading of the ordinance and if a majority supports it, on November 7th would be the final vote to adopt the revised regulations and rules. The ordinance would then go into effect 30 days later.

Vail Resorts posts gain in 2017; CalPERS increases their investment

Vail Resorts Inc., the parent company of Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood and Northstar California, posted income of $210.6 million for fiscal 2017, and increase of 40.6 percent over 2016.

Highlights of their year:

Total skier visits for fiscal 2017 increased to approximately 12.0 million, up 20.1 percent

Total lift revenue increased $160.3 million, or 24.4%

Ski school revenue increased $34.5 million, or 24.1%

Dining revenue increased $29.6 million, or 24.4%

Retail/rental revenue increased $52.3 million, or 21.7%

South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet undergoing major remodel

You spoke, they listened.

The South Lake Tahoe Grocery Outlet is expanding their produce section and other healthy food option areas, and moving all other items around to make the store easier to move around.

"Nothing is going to be in the same place," said Deanna Schouten, whose family owns the popular local store. "The non-food items will be on one side of the store, there is one full aisle of NOSH (Natural, Organic, Specialty, Healthy), new coolers and dairy section."

Things not seen every day: Boat travels almost 60 feet on Kingsbury Grade

A boat moving down the roadway without a trailer isn't a normal sight, but on Kingsbury Grade near Lake Tahoe that is exactly what happened Friday afternoon near Logging Road Lane and Ansaldo Acres Road.

At 2:13 p.m. September 22, a 2012 Ford F-150 pick-up pulling a trailer and ski boat was traveling eastbound when the driver of a 2013 Chevy Impala traveling westbound crossed over the double yellow lines around a curve, striking the rear of the pick-up. The Impala then struck the left side of the trailer.

Trail, trees and peak named after Martin Hollay at Heavenly Mountain Resort

Not many can boast of skiing the mountains around Lake Tahoe for six decades, but Martin Hollay of South Lake Tahoe can do just that and he's not done yet.

At a very young 96-years-old (he turns 97 this fall), Hollay's contributions to Heavenly Mountain Resort were recognized Monday as the ski resort dedicated Martin's Hiking Trail, Martin's Trees and a granite peak near Maggie's Run in the name of their former employee and ski patrolman.

South Lake Tahoe fire stations stocked with loaner life jackets

The use of life jackets saves lives, especially on Lake Tahoe where Cold Water Shock can kill a person in minutes.

It has been a deadly year on the lake, and the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) department has started a new program to help save lives in the future.

California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) has partnered with SLTFR in making life jackets available to the public on a loan basis. They have infant, child and adult sizes.

National Brotherhood of Skiers to hold next summit at Squaw Valley

The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows to host its next NBS Black Summit. The Summit serves as both the organization’s annual gathering of members and largest fundraiser. More than 800 NBS members and 300 guests from throughout the US and beyond are expected to attend the annual event. The week-long event will run March 3-10, 2018.

Former Heavenly employee pleads guilty to child porn charges

Former Heavenly Mountain Resort employee Stephan DeGraffenreid pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.

He faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison on each of the three counts.

16 mile memorial trail to re-create wagon route at Donner

After an agreement today, a 16-mile trail to commemorate the original wagon route west over Donner Summit will be created from Kingvale through the Donner State Memorial Park in Truckee. Users will follow the original Overland Emigrant Trail but stay away from its remnants to protect the historical artifacts.

Two new deputies for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Two new deputy sheriffs, Dustin Tremaine and Zack Hickman, were recently administered the oath of office during ceremonies held by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Both new deputies were raised in the Carson Valley, graduated from Douglas High School in 2006 and earned associate degrees from Western Nevada College (WNC).

Dustin Tremaine was awarded an Associate’s Degree in Marketing from WNC. He has been employed as a firefighter by the Nevada Division of Forestry since 2015. He also works as a seasonal firefighter and on ski patrol at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort.

Work begins at Bijou Marketplace; Whole Foods 365 plans first Lake Tahoe store

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "We've been waiting to be in South Lake Tahoe for a long time," said R. Adam Smith, Executive Director of Store Development for Whole Foods in Northern California. "Couldn't be more thrilled than to be here today."

Smith took part in Monday's groundbreaking at the new Bijou Marketplace along with the Jim Halferty and Chris Peto of Halferty Development Ground, the owners of the property along Highway 50 and the corner of Ski Run Boulevard, and local officials.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Mammoth now part of new company

Twelve four-season resorts with 20,000 skiable acres are all now part of a new company that was formed to acquire Intrawest Resort Holdings, Inc. and Mammoth Resorts.

Affiliates of KSL Capital Partners, LLC and Henry Crown and Company now own Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Snow Summit, Bear Mountain and June Mountain in California; Steamboat Ski & Resort and Winter Park Resort in Colorado; Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Ontario; Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec; Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont; and Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia.
