The 13th Annual “Near Death Experience” will take place at Kirkwood Mountain Resort from June 7-10, 2012. Known as the premier camp to prepare riders for the Death Ride, the grueling 129-mile bike tour of the California Alps on July 14, 2012, Kirkwood’s Near Death Experience Bike Camp is designed to take riders to the next level.

The three resorts each received between 12-21 inches of snow since Saturday, March 31, and March snowfall totals range from 110-146 inches.

The 5th Annual North Face Masters of Snowboarding continues through April 1 at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, presented by PrimaLoft, is the largest big mountain snowboarding competition in the country, and it provides a venue for the best snowboarders in the world to compete for a total $45,000 cash prize purse.

It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

Heavenly Mountain Resort teamed up with Nike Snowboarding on Saturday to host the fifth stop of the Nike Winter Chosen Tour. The slopestyle rail jam consisted of two components: a video crew competition, in which riding and filming crews enter online for a chance to travel to Austria and compete with professional riders and videographers, and the Night Jam, a freestyle slope session featuring production lighting and local and professional snowboarders competing for $5,000 in cash prizes.

Thanks to the power of the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system, Heavenly Mountain Resort was able to open East Bowl, the double-black diamond trail that leads to the resort’s California Lodge.
“East Bowl and The Face are really the welcome mat to our resort, as well as giving us some of the most challenging terrain in the region,” said Pete Sonntag, Heavenly’s general manager.

An inflatable airbag demonstration at Kirkwood Mountain Resort last month will give way to a new feature at the resort beginning in February, officials announced. The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will kick-off the 12th Annual Kinder Kup Race Series at Heavenly Mountain Resort on Sunday, January 22, from 8am to 2pm. Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under, the Kinder Kup series is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary and all abilities are welcome. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket if needed.

Two of Lake Tahoe's most popular ski and snowboarding icons, Daron Rahlves and Jeremy Jones, have finished shooting public service ads this week for the nonprofit Tahoe Fund's Plate for Powder program. Rahlves and Jones donated their time for the California and Nevada Lake Tahoe specialty license plates program, which gives new Tahoe license plate buyers two free Alpine or Nordic ski tickets to their choice of 12 major Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts.
