Forest Service: Dispose woodstove and fireplace ash properly

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management is cautioning local residents to follow proper procedures for discarding woodstove and fireplace ashes, after responding to two wildfires caused by disposal of woodstove ashes on National Forest System lands.

Firefighters stop advance of massive Reno wildfire

Update 5 p.m.: Firefighters have stopped the advance of the fire and are now going back and putting out hot spots. Light snow and lessening winds are helping the efforts. Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said 25 homes have been impacted by the fire. The fire has burned between 1,700 and 2,000 acres. One firefighter has been injured, one person suffered a heart attack and died and more than 4,500 NV Energy customers are without power.

Nevada Governor Makes First Formal Tribal Appointment To Cabinet

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today appointed Ted Quasula, chairman of the Nevada Indian Commission, to serve as a member of his cabinet. Hellman family donates $100K to keep mansion functional

The family that built a century-old Lake Tahoe mansion now owned by the state has donated $100,000 for its upkeep. The state Department of Parks and Recreation has accepted the donation from the Hellman family of San Francisco to support restoration efforts at the Hellman-Ehrman estate in Lake Tahoe. The mansion is along the west shores of Lake Tahoe in the Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Announcing her appointment, City Manager Tony O’Rourke said Ms. Hussong-Johnson, “has demonstrated outstanding capability to build public improvements on time and within budget and will lead the City’s Strategic Priority to Improve the Built Environment. Sarah brings a solution-oriented collaborative approach to resolving the challenges of constructing public improvements and will be an excellent leader for the years ahead.”

Autopsy provides no new details in local woman's death; investigation continues

Investigators have no new leads in the case of a South Lake Tahoe woman whose remains were found in southern Washington state in early October. The cause of death remains undetermined after an autopsy was performed.
In July, 54-year-old Marie Hanson traveled with a neighbor to the Rainbow Gathering, a countercultural event emphasizing peace and love. She was last seen on July 7, then disappeared, leaving all her personal effects behind.

Forest Service continues prescribed burns along Kingsbury Grade

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews are scheduled to resume prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade near South Shore and on the West Shore near the Tahoe Heights area today, Wednesday, Nov. 9, weather permitting. Both project areas are small, approximately two acres. Operations may continue through the week.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from these prescribed fire project areas. Smoke may be visible on Highway 207 on Kingsbury Grade and on Highway 89 on the West Shore.

Forest Service welcomes more California jobs under new ski legislation

California is expected to see a boost in its local mountain economies as a result of a new legislation that now permits year-long recreation opportunities on U.S. Forest Service ski areas. The Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act of 2011, which was signed by President Barack Obama on Nov. 7, is estimated to create and annually sustain up to 600 extra jobs nationwide.
