SITS throwing the party of the year: 2018 Elegant Evening

The community is invited to join the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club for an evening of live music, great food, drinks and friends at the 29th annual Elegant Evening will be held at Harrah's Tahoe on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

The evening's festivities start with a 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. cocktail party and social time, moving to a seated dinner from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and dancing all night with Trey Stone until 10:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy selective tastings from Crystal Basin Cellars, Tahoe Blue Vodka, Lake Tahoe AleWorx and Double Bond Wine.

LimeBike to expand to use of scooters in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe was the first city in California to carry the dockless bicycle sharing system, LimeBike, and now the community may soon be seeing the next generation, Lime-S.

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, Sam Dreiman, Manager of Strategic Development for LimeBike, and Jesse Patterson, Deputy Director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, made a presentation to Council on numbers from 2017 and plans for 2018.

Man dies after being pinned under snowmobile on Tahoe Rim Trail

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputies and Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to Spooner Summit and the Tahoe Rim Trail on Thursday afternoon after receiving a call of a missing person.

At about 4:50 p.m. on March 29, 2018, Michael Mullins called for help after not being able to find his friend after they became separated while snowmobiling about 15 miles in on the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Mullins said his friend, 56-year-old Thomas Korves of Elk Grove, was not an experienced snowmobiler so he called 911 for help when he couldn't locate him.

New South Lake Tahoe resort plans unveiled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2008 it was known as "The Hole" after financing dried up for a redevelopment project, bordered by Highway 50, Stateline Avenue, Friday Avenue and Cedar Avenue. A cement hole with rebar stayed until the project area could get under control of one owner through bankruptcy. In 2013, Owens Financial obtained a building permit to start spending $400 million to build over 27,000 square feet of commercial space along Highway 50. This was followed by the Zalanta Resort opening at Highway 50 and Friday Avenue in 2017.

Pitbull to headline at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert venue during Celebrity Golf

Rapper, singer, actor and producer Pitbull will perform at the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Friday evening, July 13. This will be the highlight concert for the 29th annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Pitbull's real name is Armando Christian Pérez and he will be at the United Nations in New York City on March 22, World Water Day, to be named Clean Water Here Ambassador.

Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. show will be $59.50 to $149.50.

Donny and Marie Osmond heading to South Lake Tahoe for outdoor concert

They are a "little bit country" and a "little bit rock n' roll." They came to American television during their variety show series from 1976 to 1979 and now they're headed to South Lake Tahoe.

An Evening with Donny and Marie Osmond have been added to the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series lineup at Harveys Outdoor Arena and will be on the South SHore Friday, Aug. 24.

Another addition to the schedule is Robert Plant’s fiddle player will perform solo as the “walk in” music prior to the Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters show on June 23. Los Lobos will open the show.

South Lake Brewing celebrates beer and community

Many head to the cooler at their local beverage purveyor, perhaps never thinking of the process involved in getting that beer from the brewery to their lips.

This week, South Lake Brewing Company canned 4,800 cans of three types of beer, their already famous Fog Nozzle and Angora IPA, along with their Pillow Line Pale Ale. This was their second canning since opening in May, 2017, and it was also their biggest.

Bears at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care heading back home soon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The four bear cubs who have been spending the winter at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) will soon be heading back into the wild.

Last summer, the nonprofit organization in South Lake Tahoe lost two of their six cubs suddenly to a virus called Canine Adenovirus. This came as a shock to the group who has rehabilitated animals from not only Lake Tahoe, but from around the state since forming forty years ago in 1978.

USFS hosts Desolation Wilderness volunteer workshop in South Lake Tahoe

Robert Plant and the Sensational Shape Shifters headed to Lake Tahoe with Los Lobos

Music icon Robert Plant is bringing his Carry Fire tour to the lake on June 23, 2018 at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys. He will be performing with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters. Los Lobos will be their opening act.

The English singer, songwriter, and musician is best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band Led Zeppelin. He formed The Sensational Space Shifters in 2012 and since then they have toured and released albums, the latest of which is Carry Fire.

Sierra snowpack up to 39% of average, last week it was at 7%

PHILLIPS STATION, CALIF. - In 2017, the water content on March 1 at Phillips Station was measured at 185 percent of normal. One year later it is a different story, but much better than just a week ago.

The water content of the snow measured at Phillips Station on March 5, 2018 is 39 percent of the historical average with the 41.1" snow at the measuring spot 14 miles west of Lake Tahoe containing a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 9.4".

The SWE is the amount of water that would come out of the snow if melted all at once.

Locals Tim and Kristi Cain moved into the space vacated by Verde and spent weeks creating the new restaurant and menu. Master Gardener's workshops on growing food in Lake Tahoe

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Classes will run from May 14 - June 14th, 2018 in the evenings.

Luke Bryan heading to Lake Tahoe for outdoor concert

Country music star Luke Bryan is bringing his What Makes You Country Tour 2018 to town when they stop at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series on the South Shore at Harveys.

He will be in Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 25 at 7:00 p.m.

This will make a big week of country in Lake Tahoe with Keith Urban on July 21 and 22 and Chris Stapleton on July 26.

Popular Southern California-based band Slightly Stoopid will return to the South Shore to kick-off the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Saturday, June 16 at 5:00 p.m.

SLT Parks & Recreation Commission opposes events on local fields

With the March 6 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting set to address the annual music festival SnowGlobe, the Parks & Recreation Commission held a special meeting to decide what their stance would be on the festival being held on the Community Playfields.

The new playfields have never had a soccer or football game played on them, but they are in need of a lot of repair after SnowGlobe unpacked and left after their Dec. 29-31 event.

Emanate Art Gallery opens at The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe

Entrepreneurs continue to be a part of the renaissance in South Lake Tahoe, bringing new businesses and experiences throughout the town.

Three long-time locals have become part of that vibe and opened Emanate Gallery in The Crossing at Tahoe Valley at the Y and will be celebrating with a grand opening weekend February 24-25 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Benjamin Sullivan, a 2010 South Tahoe High graduate, joined Angela and Ron Cabrera in opening the new gallery, complete with its own full service custom frame shop and unique delivery services.

Two Lake Tahoe locals featured on Women Who Dare

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - One year ago, South Tahoe Now carried the story of Kerry Gross, a local woman who was setting off on a bike ride across the country as part of her "Women Who Dare" project.

The Women Who Dare podcast, to be released on March 6, follows Gross on her five-month bike ride where she met inspirational women who had a story to tell. She spent the summer of 2017 riding 5,800 miles to meet and interview remarkable women.

Slightly Stoopid to kick off concert season in South Lake Tahoe

Popular Southern California-based band Slightly Stoopid will return to the South Shore to kick-off the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Saturday, June 16 at 5:00 p.m. This will be their fifth outing at the award-winning summer concert venue.

The band, who describe themselves as “a fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk,” bring along popular support acts Stick Figure and Pepper. Tickets are $39.50 each.

NDOT looking for paid summer interns

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is looking ahead to the summer road construction season by accepting applications for paid summer internships through Feb. 28.

The internships provide on-the-job training in civil and environmental engineering, including roadway and bridge design, construction, hydraulics, materials, as well as traffic engineering, environmental stewardship and highway project administration, maintenance and storm water management.

The internships take place May through August 2018 and pay up to $18 per hour, depending on education and experience.

South Lake Tahoe's Sierra Boulevard study released for public review

The Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project is slated to start construction as soon as the building season in South Lake Tahoe gets underway in 2018. As part of the process, an The Initial Sturdy/Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) is now up for review and public comment. Comments can be made until March 26, 2018.

Vote for Lakeview Commons concessionaires on Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - There may be new vendors at Lakeview Commons this summer. At the 9:00 a.m. South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 20, City staff will present the results of the bidding process for concessionaires at both the food and beverage concession and non-motorized watercraft rental service.

Staff's recommended concessionaires are Sierra-at-Tahoe for the food and beverage services at Lakeview Commons, and Tahoe City Kayak and Paddleboard for the watercraft rentals. The Council will take their consideration into their vote.

Steve Miller Band and Peter Frampton headed to Lake Tahoe

A great classic rock show has been added to the lineup for the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena: The Steve Miller Band and Peter Frampton will hit the stage on Friday evening, Aug. 17. Tickets are $39.50 to $139.50 and the show starts at 7:00 p.m.

Frampton and Steve Miller are the seventh show announced for the summer on the South Shore, with more acts to be announced soon.

STHS tackle Logan Langemeier headed to Jacksonville University

South Tahoe High offensive tackle Logan Langemeier will be wearing the green and white of the Jacksonville University Dolphins football team this fall.

During an official signing ceremony at the school Wednesday, the 6'4" 240 pound senior credited his mom and his training for getting him to this point.

A football player since the age of eight, Logan said he tried soccer but fell in love with football through Pop Warner.

Proposed improvements at Heavenly released

The U.S. Forest Service has released their draft decision for proposed improvements to existing skiing and snowboarding terrain at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Much of the work will be done on runs outside of the Lake Tahoe Basin boundary.

Those proposed improvements would include selective widening of ski trails, removing trail obstacles and relocation and/or realignment of some portions of existing snowmaking air and water pipelines to improve user experience, maintain user safety, increase energy and water efficiency, and maintain native species.

Styrofoam ban approved for South Lake Tahoe

The South Lake Tahoe City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to start the process to implement a three-tier ban of Styrofoam (Polystyrene) in the city limits.

Following the path of over one hundred cities and counties in California, South Lake Tahoe will ban single-use Polystyrene used for take-out foods, and ban retail sales of foam coolers and single-use food containers at all retail stores. The third tier voted on is already a part of special event regulations - all containers used must be compostable.

City Council to vote on finalizing $250,000 from SnowGlobe organizer for fields

As part of his agreement with the City of South Lake Tahoe to hold SnowGlobe on the new Community Play Fields, organizer Chad Donnelly guaranteed $250,000 to fix and/or replace the fields should they be damaged by the three-day festival December 29-31.

Anemic Sierra snowpack at 14% of average

Even with the recent snowfall, the monthly measurement of the snowpack at Phillip Station west of Lake Tahoe was just 14 percent of the historical average. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) manual snow survey found little snowpack there, two months into what is typically California’s wettest three months.

Measurements at Phillips Station revealed a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 2.6 inches at Phillips as measured there since 1964. SWE is the depth of water that theoretically would result if the entire snowpack melted instantaneously.

Kenny Chesney returning to Lake Tahoe outdoor arena this summer

Kenny Chesney is the latest country star to announce they are heading to Lake Tahoe for the 2018 Summer Concert Series at the outdoor arena at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Chesney's Trip Around the Sun Tour will stop in Lake Tahoe on July 3 for an 8:00 p.m. show. Tickets will be $69.50 to $149.50.

This announcement comes just a day after Grammy award winner Chris Stapleton announced his visit to the South Shore.

Chesney's show is now the sixth one announced for the summer on the South Shore, with more acts to be announced soon.

Grammy award winner Chris Stapleton headed to Lake Tahoe

On Sunday he won three Grammy's, and on Monday, Chris Stapleton announced the stops on his 2018 All-American Road Show and Lake Tahoe is on that list.

Stapleton, along with Brent Cobb and Marty Stuart, will be at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on July 26, 2018. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 9.

Stapleton won the Grammies on January 28 for Best Country Album of the Year with his "From a Room, Vol. 1," "Broken Halos" as Best Country Song, and Best Country Solo Performance for "Either Way." He is also the Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year three years running.

Customers weigh in on Liberty Utilities in survey

The cumulative results of Liberty Utilities’ quarterly Customer Satisfaction Surveys in 2017 show improvements in corporate citizenship and communications. The survey also showed overall customer satisfaction increased by six points compared to first quarter results.

The online survey is independently conducted by JD Power, and Liberty Utilities’ results are compared with comparable electric utilities in the west. Some highlights of the 2017 survey results show:

New ski pass to give users access to 23 resorts in 9 states, 2 countries

The Alterra Mountain Company has announced the a new pass for the 2018-19 season, the Ikon Pass. It will give pass holders access to many of North America’s top mountain destinations, uniting 12 destinations from Alterra Mountain Company with 11 premier partners.

Phish returns to Lake Tahoe for two nights during outdoor concert series

Phish’s 2018 Summer Tour begins with two performances at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on July 17 and 18, and culminates with the band’s traditional summer ending shows in September at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.

An online ticket request period is currently underway at tickets.phish.com and will end Monday, February 5t at 7:00 a.m. PST. Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning February 8.

Keith Urban headed to Lake Tahoe for outdoor summer concert series

Country music superstar Keith Urban will be stopping by the South Shore this summer during the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena.

He and Kelsea Ballerini, an American country pop singer and songwriter, will stop by during Urban's "GRAFFITI U" tour with two shows, July 21 and 22. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. show will be from $59.50 to $139.50.

Urban announced Wednesday the new tour "GRAFFITI U" dates that will coincide with his new album of the same name.

Column: Marking five years of progress on regional plan

Conserving and restoring Lake Tahoe’s natural environment and revitalizing its communities requires a delicate balancing act. Historically, building consensus around how to strike that balance has been one of the region’s greatest difficulties.

Lake Tahoe reached its strongest-ever consensus on that balance with the 2012 Regional Plan and its focus on sustainable redevelopment to restore natural areas, bring legacy development up to modern environmental standards, and create walkable, bikeable, and vibrant town centers.

Dave Matthews Band returning to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena this summer

The Dave Matthews Band is headed to Lake Tahoe as part of their newly announced Summer 2018 tour. They'll stop at the Outdoor Arena at Harvey's on Friday, September 7.

Tickets will go on sale February 2.

Dave Matthews Band, known also as DMB, also announced Tuesday that they are releasing their long awaited ninth studio album. They were last on the South Shore September 9, 2015, a night with two full sets of music by the popular band.

South Lake Tahoe wrestler part of WFC Championships

Many in South Lake Tahoe know native son Ryan Wallace, whether it's from his starting to wrestle at age 5, being a high school and middle school coach, or from when the community pulled together in 2014 to raise funds for his new prosthetic leg.

Could that be snow in the Lake Tahoe forecast?

With the Sierra snowpack at three percent of normal at Echo Summit, and 84 percent of normal at top of Mt. Rose, snow is needed not only on the slopes, but at upper elevations to keep reservoirs full of water for summer.

The weather pattern remains unsettled into the weekend in Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe. A warm and relatively weak system Friday evening into Saturday will bring
additional rain and high elevation snow to the region. A brief break is expected Sunday before a stronger and wetter system is forecast to impact the region Monday and Tuesday.

To the City, Snowglobe, and Community – As many of you know I am vocal critic of Snowglobe. Well after another year I feel like it’s kind of tradition for me to write my letter and vent about the event.

I will preface this letter with a reminder that I am not against events in the area. I just want events to be at a proper venue and I want them to not shake the walls of my house.

The Tides Project donates to Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Local female business owner, Karly Matzen of The Tides Project, sells her crafts online and trade shows throughout the Tahoe basin. You make have seen The Tides Project booth at the Made In Tahoe festival or Live at Lakeview this summer. In return, 10% of her sales goes back to funding art programs. Her vision is to bring supplies to the community in order to support a positive outlet for youth through the Arts.

South Tahoe High's McCallan Castles signs to play for Cal Bears

There will be a lot more Cal football fans in South Lake Tahoe over the next four years after McCallan Castles signed his letter of intent to play for Coach Wilcox and the University of California Bears Wednesday.

The highly recruited South Tahoe High School (STHS) senior had 18 Division 1 schools trying to get him to sign with them. He narrowed the list down to Utah, Washington State, Duke and Cal before making the decision, something that was easy the moment he stepped onto the Berkeley campus.

Charlie Puth coming to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena

Multi-Platinum artist/musician/producer Charlie Puth has announced plans for his biggest North American headline tour to date, The Voicenotes Tour, and they include a stop at the scenic Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Multi-Platinum recording artist Hailee Steinfeld will be joining Puth on the tour.

You can catch Puth on Tuesday night's finale of The Voice on NBC and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

NDOT completes second season of SR 28 shared use path construction

The Nevada Department of Transportation this week completed the second construction season of the State Route 28 Shared Use Path, Water Quality and Safety Improvement Project near Incline Village. The entire project is anticipated to complete in late 2018 or early 2019, depending on weather.
