Submitted by Editor on Wed, 07/18/2012 - 10:14amThe Forest Service fire chief for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is suspending residential burning, also known as "dooryard" burning, effective today, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, through the remainder of fire season.
The ban applies to debris burning on private, state and federal lands of El Dorado and Placer counties in the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to a news release.
Residential debris burning is already banned within the South Lake Tahoe city limits, and in both the Tahoe Douglas and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection districts.

UPDATED: As Lake Tahoe continues to earn the respectable distinction of having bicycle-friendly communities, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will host experts from two well-established cities to discuss ways the basin can improve its trails and paths.
The TRPA has invited bicycle community planners from Portland, Oregon and Park City, Utah for a community speaker panel today, Thursday, July 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Board Room. A similar speaker panel was held on Wednesday at Kings Beach.

Environmental art exhibit 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe through July

The Lake Tahoe Science Consortium collaborated with University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art to create “Visualizing Change,” a photographic art expedition intended to convey concepts in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe to the scientific community and general public. The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.
Volunteers invited to tackle Lake Tahoe invasive species

Lake Tahoe Basin residents and visitors are invited to help remove one of Tahoe’s most prolific aquatic invasive weeds, Eurasian watermilfoil, during a community volunteer event at Baldwin Beach on Sunday, July 15.
The project is a partnership of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for all three agencies.

A large area of high pressure will expand westward bringing high temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above normal this week, with mid 70s to low 90s over the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, with mid 90s to 108 degrees in Western Nevada valleys below 5,000 feet.
While hardly the broiling heat wave experienced last week in the northeast, the change will be noticeable, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Power between two-wheels will be celebrated Aug. 23-26, 2012 at the inaugural Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous. Organized by riders who've tracked every part of the Lake Tahoe Basin by road and dirt bike, the Rendezvous is open to all makes of motorcycles and enthusiasts of every stripe. Participants will ride all day through South Lake Tahoe and beyond, then swap stories of their daytime adventures during after-ride cocktail parties and night-time dining options.

Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season.
Forest Service continues project to eliminate invasive weeds from the Lake Tahoe Basin

Lake Tahoe becomes ground zero for climate change study

Lake Tahoe may be one of the most studied lakes in the world, but just how to translate all that climate change data into action remains a challenge. Data suggest a decrease in snow, more extremes like drought and flooding and reduced lake clarity.
Data suggest climate change is bringing an increased risk of more severe forest fires, but warming temperatures may cause other complex ecosystem changes. Local agencies are already planning ways to mitigate and adapt, but making policy based on models that show global trends over the next century is not an easy task.
Sessions, webinar offers overview of Lake Tahoe Forest Service plan alternatives

In doing so it has also planned four information meetings and will provide an interactive webinar to assist the public with review, commenting and revision of the plan.
The information sessions include work stations and will provide an overview of the four plan alternatives detailed in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Alternatives address vegetation, fire and fuels, wildlife habitat, watershed and recreation and access.

Work begins on the Upper Truckee River and High Meadows projects

On Monday, June 25, 2012, the Forest Service began constructing the staging area for the Upper Truckee River Reach 5 restoration project that will begin in 2013, at the former Sunset Stables site.
The work, which will continue for approximately two weeks, includes the installation of an approximately two acre aggregate base pad, which is designed to prevent the spread of noxious weeds into the project area.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management unit reminds folks that having fireworks of any kind — and sparklers are considered fireworks — is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Campfires are not permitted on Forest Service beaches or in the general forest. For Wednesday, July 4, 2012, only, personal barbecues are allowed at Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches but are not permitted on any other Forest Service beaches or in the general forest.

A Red Flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Reno until 10 p.m. Thursday night for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Eastern Sierra and Western Nevada. Low pressure associated with a jet stream will pass over the Sierra today producing low humidity and gusty winds to 40 mph across Northeast California, the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Eastern Sierra. The combination of law humidity and wind will create critical fire conditions, according to the weather service.

An area of low pressure will push a cold front across northern California and Nevada Friday, producing gusty afternoon and early evening winds. These winds will combine with low relative humidity to create critical fire weather conditions for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Southwest winds Friday afternoon will become west Friday evening with sustained speeds of 15 to 30 mph and gusts of 40 to 45 mph.

Forest Service seeks public input on Lake Tahoe plan alternatives

Burn pile spreads into brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe (updated)

Update 12:22PM: A small brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe is contained and burned about one-quarter of an acre, reports U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Forest Service brought the fire to containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Heck said. Initial reports that came in said the fire started as a backyard burn pile.

Researchers at Fallen Leaf confirm ancient 'megadroughts' around Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada

The erratic year-to-year swings in precipitation totals in the Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno areas conjures up the word “drought” every couple of years, and this year is no exception. The Nevada State Climate Office at the University of Nevada, Reno, in conjunction with the Nevada Drought Response Committee, announced Thursday a Stage 1 drought (moderate) for six counties and a Stage 2 drought (severe) for 11 counties.
Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada are no strangers to drought, the most famous being the Medieval megadrought lasting from 800 to 1250 A.D. when annual precipitation was less than 60 percent of normal. The Reno-Tahoe region is now about 65 percent of annual normal precipitation for the year, which doesn’t seem like much, but imagine if this were the “norm” each and every year for the next 200 years.
