Op/Ed: County Planning Commission against Open Meeting law requirements

In a stunning step backwards from transparency the El Dorado County Planning Commission, holding a difficult to attend morning week-day workshop on the Draft Meyers Area Plan at City Hall in South Lake Tahoe on October 16, 2014, recommended yesterday that any new Meyers Area Advisory Council formed by the Board of Supervisor after adoption of a Meyers Area Plan not be subject to California’s Open Meeting Law, the Brown Act.

Op/Ed: People need to come out for the Meyers Area Plan meeting on Thursday

Most of us moved to Meyers because it's a rural community, away from the City & tourist congestion. I am pro-growth, most locals are, as long as it's appropriately sized growth for our community. The proposed Meyer's Plan however, opens the door to a Mega Resort, with incentives for large development and in my mind, lacks long range planning.

I started going to planning meetings last summer, just to listen, but it wasn't until December that I got really concerned. Here's a timeline of events, from my perspective:

Edward Joseph McCarthy 1921 - 2014

We just wanted to let those that knew our father, Edward Joseph McCarthy, that our father passed away at 10:25pm Thursday night, October 2, 2014, in his Lake Tahoe home at the age of 93. He was surrounded by family members as he slipped away from us.

Speed dating met politics in South Lake Tahoe candidate forum

If the success of Thursday night's merging of South Lake Tahoe politics with speed dating is any indication, we should see many more forums done in the same format in the future. A much more educated and knowledgeable voter emerged from the evening's event at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Hear from the candidates during Chamber Forum at LTCC

Event Date:
October 9, 2014 - 5:00pm

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, KTHO Radio and Lake Tahoe Community College are jointly sponsoring the Candidate's Forum in the Aspen Room, which is in the college's library building, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Op/Ed: Why I wanted TahoeChamber’s endorsement

Running for elected office is one of the most humbling experiences a person can have. You’re allowing yourself to be scrutinized by your community, people can take shots at your positions, and you have to move forward with calm and ease the entire time. I knew I wanted to make a difference in our community after completing the TahoeChamber’s Leadership Lake Tahoe program, little did I know that I’d be taking action and running for City Council so soon.

Op/Ed: TahoeChamber clarifies endorsement process

Tahoe Chamber has a long history of Representing Business to Government via advocating for policies that provide a fair and predictable process for businesses of any size. This process is guided by our Government Affairs Committee (GAC), the
board, the Chamber CEO and our Government Affairs Liaison.

Op/Ed: Tahoe Chamber Endorsements

Here ya go. This is my opinion of the Tahoe Chamber endorsements. Send back any thoughts or corrections. Believe it or not I tried to take the high road on this one and hope the town is smart enough to see through the endorsement process by the Tahoe Chamber. Thanks.Kenny

How to give customers a great experience will be the focus of a workshop given by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce and City of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, October 1.

In a time when customers expect even more from those they choose to business with this subject is very important for all South Lake Tahoe business owners.

Kudos: SUP & Sip BAHM

Thank you to those who joined us for the SUP & Sip BAHM!, TahoeChamber’s last mixer of the summer season. It was a fun filled evening that included paddling on the lake, sipping local wines and networking at South Tahoe Standup Paddle’s retail store.

Thank you to Chris Brackett for hosting this event at South Tahoe Standup Paddle and also for providing rentals to attendees for use at El Dorado Beach. A big thank you also to Boeger Winery for providing wine and to Exquisite Grill for the delicious spread of sliders, grilled veggies and s’mores.

Op/Ed: Why I declined endorsement from Nevada based Chamber

First let me say that I respect my opponent in this race and consider him a friend. I also respect the other candidates for the other offices who were endorsed by the Nevada based Chamber. I and other candidates declined to participate. Here are my reasons.

Op/Ed: Let’s send a message

Dear voters,

I’m hoping you will send a message by voting for me to work for you on the South Tahoe Public Utility District Board. I’ve been a local 40 years, through droughts, storms, power outages and great sunny powder ski days.

At 21, I opened Happy Steak Restaurant and owned it for 16 years. I was CEO of the California based South Lake Tahoe Chamber for 12 years and I taught Business and Personnel at LTCC. I have a BA in business administration and I’m a graduate of the Institute for Organization Management. I’m a past STPUD Board member.

Voters can now stay on top of issues and find out election news on Chamber website

The November elections are just 7 weeks away and the Tahoe Chamber has added tools to their website for local voters to stay informed.

The deadline to register to vote in California is 15 days before Election Day and 31 days before Election Day in Nevada if registering by mail. This resource is courtesy of a partnership between CalChamber and BiPacin an effort to increase voter registration, participation and knowledge of issues affecting voters’ communities.

Seven South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates vying for votes at forum Wednesday

The seven candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council were at Wednesday nights Candidate Forum at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The Tahoe Chamber and Tahoe Daily Tribune hosted the evening which had Rabbi Evon Yakar moderating the questions and answers.

About 100 people showed up to listen to panel who were given questions prepared by the chamber's new political committee as well as those asked by the audience. The questions were asked of different candidates so not everyone was asked the same one.

Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Two new board members for Tahoe Prosperity Center

Not only has the Tahoe Prosperity Center has been working on issues to create healthier communities around the lake, they have also been welcoming new members to their Board of Directors.

New to the board are locals John McLaughlin, Chief Financial Officer of Edgewood Companies and Ken Riley, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Infrastructure Group, Inc. They join 24 other community members on the board whose goal is to also promote regional sustainability through economic vitality and by being environmental stewards.

Op/Ed: Reflection on the Election

The Board of Directors of California’s South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and myself want to thank South Shore residents for voting in the June 3rd primary. Voting is the opportunity for government to be brought into alignment with the wishes of its citizens. Voting is that precious American right to elect candidates to public office who will govern and shape the future of the community.
