NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology weighs in on Sunday's loud boom heard and fireball seen from California's Central Valley to Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas:

UNR technology used for NASA quake monitoring test

GPS technology developed and implemented at the University of Nevada, Reno will be the centerpiece of a major test this year by NASA to pinpoint the location and magnitude of strong earthquakes along the West Coast of the United States. The project was announced by NASA today.

Marc Johnson named University of Nevada Reno UNR President

University of Nevada Reno interim chief Marc Johnson, who took over after the sudden death of administrative leader Milt Click, was selected by the state's Board of Regents as the 16th president of UNR.
“It is a high honor to have been given this opportunity,” said Johnson, who has served as UNR's interim president since April. “I am very gratified by the community and campus support of my candidacy.”

GPS helps aid in two separate South Lake Tahoe area search and rescue operations

Cell phones equipped with GPS technology helped in two successful search and rescue missions in South Lake Tahoe over the weekend.
On Saturday a fast-moving weather front moved into the Lake Tahoe area, creating blizzard-like conditions. The storm caught visiting San Diego resident Robert Barber by surprise. He had gone for a walk into the woods off Kiowa Street in South Lake Tahoe and at around 2 p.m. as the storm intensified, he became disoriented due to almost zero visibility.

Nevada DMV driverless vehicle applications available March 1

With the approval earlier this month of regulations that allow the testing of driverless vehicles in Nevada, application packages will be available March 1 for companies wanting to apply their autonomous test vehicles.

Nevada’s Legislative Commission of the Department of Motor Vehicles approved regulations allowing the testing of driverless — a.k.a. “autonomous” — vehicles to be driven on the state’s roads, according to an announcement on Feb. 15.

Regional transportation issues will be focus of November workshops

The Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization will host two workshops November 1 and 3 to get public input on transportation priorities. The workshops are part of a four-year update of the Regional Transportation Plan (Mobility 2035) being carried out by TMPO and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. The agencies encourage public input to better serve the needs of the community, according to TRPA Transportation Planning Manager Nick Haven.
