South Lake Tahoe renter-homeowner matching website launched

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Home Connection (TaHoCo) is a community-based organization working to generate new rentals in South Lake Tahoe by working with second home owners. They have launched a new website to help local workers easily find housing on the South Shore.

It is estimated that 58 percent of homes in South Lake Tahoe are owned by second homeowners and 78 percent of these sit vacant for much of the year. Many of the second homeowners rent out their homes on both long-term and short-term basis, or leave for their own personal use.

100 Miles for Tahoe Virtual Challenge - Run, walk, bike during the month of June

The Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club (TMMRC) is inviting the public to lace up your shoes and run/walk/hike during the month of June for the 100 Miles for Tahoe Virtual Challenge, a fundraiser benefiting the Tahoe Rim Trail Association.

Each year, TMMRC contributes part of the proceeds from races like Escape from Prison Hill to the TRTA, but these race, like so many others, are canceled for the time being. Still, running isn't canceled, and neither is the need for stewardship and maintenance of the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Tahoe Homeless Coalition housed 148 people this winter; New services now offered

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) had settled into their new winter home on 3rd Street in South Lake Tahoe when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing them to look for a larger space to get more people off the streets.

The City of South Lake Tahoe opened its recreation center to the nonprofit as it was already closed due to the pandemic, allowing TCH to add more beds and services and become a 24/7 facility.

Suicides on the rise in South Lake Tahoe during COVID-19 crisis

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the months of March and April 2020 there were five suicides in South Lake Tahoe. That equals the total number of suicides in all of 2019 in the community, and one less than in 2018.

There were none in January or February before the coronavirus hit.

Cocktails on Brenda's Balcony has become a pandemic social media hit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Brenda Simpkins first posted a picture on Facebook of a glass of chardonnay on her balcony with Mt. Tallac in the background, little did she know she would become a much-needed respite in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

She posted that photo on the I Love Lake Tahoe page, gathering hundreds of "likes" and several comments about what her next drink would be. A new fan suggested a Lemon Drop would look nice on the balcony, and so it began.

Reopening guidelines approved for Nevada casinos

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Casinos in Nevada will not be opening during the Phase 1 reopening plan unveiled by Governor Steve Sisolak Thursday. All Nevada casinos will be required to create and implement an infectious disease prevention plan before they will be allowed to open once Sisolak gives them the green light. He said Thursday Phase 1 expires May 30 and the next phase can start then, or even earlier if all goes as planned. It is unknown at this time if casinos will be included in the next reopening phase.

Douglas County school board selects their HR director as next superintendent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School District has hired a new superintendent to replace the retiring Teri White.

In a unanimous decision, the board voted 7-0 to hire Keith Lewis as the next superintendent. Lewis is the District's current Human Resources executive director. He will start to transition into the position immediately and officially take over when White leaves, sometime this summer.

Four-week acting online workshop starts in May in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A four-week on-line acting workshop will be starting on May 11, 2020. Take 2 Performers Studio and Tahoe Production House have teamed up to bring this workshop to youth with a focus on television and film acting.

This is an interactive class where students will develop a solid foundation and acting techniques including improv, auditioning skills for film and television, and on-camera experience with instructors Justine Reyes and Holly Lorge.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is currently accepting applications for community
members to join the newly formed transformational change sub-committee. This committee is focused on developing second and third economies for Tahoe in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

New fire chief selected for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new fire chief hired for South Lake Tahoe is no stranger to the Sierra Nevada and El Dorado County.

Clive Savacool, the former chief of the Garden Valley Fire Protection District, will be taking the helm at South Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, a position vacated when Jeff Meston retired in February 2019.

America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe rescheduled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another event casualty due to the coronavirus is the 29th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. Originally set for Sunday, June 7, it has been rescheduled to combine with the 18th annual Tour de Tahoe, set for Sunday, September 13, 2020. This due to the uncertainty of current and changing CDC coronavirus COVID-19 restrictions and mandates by national, state and county health agencies.

New interim fire chief for Lake Valley Fire Protection District

MEYERS, Calif. - Starting Wednesday, March 18, Lake Valley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brad Zlendick will be moving into the role of Interim Fire Chief. The current chief, Tim Alameda, will be retiring starting May 9, but he will be using accrued vacation and sick time until then.

LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is on a delayed start of 10:00 a.m. this morning to allow time for snow removal operations to catch up around town.

LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Aging and caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is bringing a free five-week-long Aging and Caregiver educational series to South Lake Tahoe from April 13 - May 11, 2020.

The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler says goodbye; March retirement date set

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just two weeks the City of South Lake Tahoe will be saying goodbye to its sixth police chief since becoming incorporated in 1965.

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.

Mr. Robison will explain how Mark Twain wound up in Virginia City, and on occasion in the Lake Tahoe basin. He will also share his discovery of a vast collection of antique 1860's type from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City where Mark Twain was a reporter and city editor during the early silver discoveries of the Comstock Lode.

Positive results for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe during their first two months

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Providing a much-needed service in the community, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been filling a void with special pet therapy training, wellness clinics, spay and neuter programs.

Since opening in December 2019, HSTT has provided over 100 spay and neuters to the community for free or at a reduced rate. They have also trained 60 new volunteers.

Science Expo volunteers needed in both South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is seeking volunteers to assist with this year's Science Expo. No experience is necessary and the job is "fun and easy."

Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. All the volunteers need is a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth. Training will be provided prior to the event.

The University of California invites Tahoe-based adults interested in teaching others sustainable gardening to become a Master Gardener volunteer. You will learn University-based scientific information and then share that knowledge with others. UC Master Gardener volunteers are people of all ages and from all walks of life with a common desire to help others learn about gardening.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe chosen for innovative cat training program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE and TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has been selected to participate in the 2020 class of Cat Pawsitive, a life-saving initiative that introduces positive-reinforcement training to cats in shelters and rescues. Supported by the Petco Foundation, this innovative program aims to increase feline adoption rates and maintain cat “mojo.”

Jury finds South Lake Tahoe man guilty of multiple counts of child molestation

A South Lake Tahoe man has been found guilty on four counts of felony child molestation which included one count of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child under 14, two counts of Lewd and Lascivious Acts upon a Child under 14, and one count of Forcible Lewd Act upon a Child under 14.

John Robert Garcia, 45, was arrested in April 2019 after a five-month-long investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.

LTCC expands child care to evening hours to help student parents

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For some students, there are many barriers to their being able to get a college degree, one of them being affordable child care. A recent move by the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is helping remove that barrier by having extended hours on Monday and Tuesday evenings so parents who are LTCC students can attend classes and/or study.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – More than 250 community members gathered for the 29th annual Barton Gala at Harrah's Tahoe on December 7. Their pledges and donations during the evening hit a record-breaking $90,000 to support community health in the Lake Tahoe area.

This year’s Gala beneficiary was the Family Birthing Center at Barton Memorial Hospital, with proceeds from the black tie soiree funding medical equipment and training to keep at-risk newborns close to their families in those precious first moments together.

Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen preparing to open in Lake Tahoe
