For nearly 30 years, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office could rely on volunteer Richard Swartzendruber to deliver equipment necessary to support our Search and Rescue teams. From floods and fires to avalanches, water rescues, injured hikers, and stranded motorists, Richard would overcome conditions that were often extreme to haul boats, command centers or other equipment needed to help the mission succeed.

Richard, described by his family as an “adored husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather,” passed away on December 11, 2017.

The spirit of Christmas comes to life as the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra and the Pat Esters Gospel Choir blend Christmas favorites, jazz, and soul - with a few surprises mixed in – for three performances of feel good, ‘get ready for the holidays’ music and song. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform as well.

“Last year’s Gospel Christmas Show with the RJO was such a success we decided to bring it back to the Reno and Lake Tahoe region,” said Chuck Reider, Music Director.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling Services will again team up this holiday season to make giving to Christmas Cheer easier than ever.

The LTVA’s Drive and Drop for Christmas Cheer takes place Monday, December 4 through Saturday, December 9, from 9AM-5PM. Drive through the Visitor Center parking lot at 3066 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, and drop your donations of food or toys into the bins provided by South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling.

Cash donations should be brought into the Visitor Center. Restaurants and businesses are encouraged to participate.

Next to Commons Beach in North Lake Tahoe are the Place County owned Fire Station 51 and adjacent properties, and they are looking for someone to reinvent the area into a mixed-use development.

Experienced mixed-use development firms and other interested parties are invited to submit letters of interest for a long-term lease and their reuse concept for the former firehouse, Tahoe Community Center building and the former visitor center building.

Unknowingly, visitors to South Lake Tahoe are renting legitimate vacation homes through illegitimate parties, leaving them without money or a place to stay when they arrive.

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.

The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites residents and visitors to join members of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary to honor all veterans, active and retired on Veterans Day. The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. Refreshments will be served.

A $5,000 matching gift by Tahoe Blue Vodka has led to over $10,000 raised to support the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s beach and community cleanups.

“We can’t thank Matt Levitt and Tahoe Blue Vodka enough for their continued support for our efforts to protect Lake Tahoe’s shoreline,” said Darcie Goodman Collins, PhD, the League’s executive director. “Our beach cleanups are a central part of our efforts to engage Tahoe’s community, and this gift brought the community together to help provide the funds we need.”

I have lived in South Lake Tahoe for 37 years and hope to live in this amazing place for many more years to come. In that time I have not always been pleased with the way our City has spent its tax revenues, but, in the last several years, I believe there has been a concerted effort to control spending and to provide better oversight in the way these funds are used. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local artist Malcolm Tibbetts will be giving a lecture to members of the public as part of the Lake Tahoe Community College Art Club's Visiting Artist Series on Friday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the school's room F101.

Tibbetts primarily works with wood and has been featured during the Tahoe Art League's annual Studio Tour. He has donated several large sculptures to LTCC that can be found around campus.

Good news for South Lake Tahoe as the Amgen Tour of California has announced their 2018 race schedule. A favored site for the women’s race, South Lake Tahoe will once again host the men for the Stage 6 finish and welcome back the women for the fourth year in a row on May 18. 2018.

Ever since we moved to South Lake Tahoe thirty eight years ago, we have been proud to call this city our home. The City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance are partnering for the second art gallery reception on Monday, October 23 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall located at 1901 Airport Road.

The Tahoe Arts Alliance connects artists, businesses and organizations on the South Shore, and the City’s lobby serves as a blank canvas to display local artists. The art will be rotated throughout the year and all art will be available for purchase.

The City Art Gallery reception will include a meet and greet with displaying artists and city officials. All are welcome to attend.

During Fire Prevention Week each year, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds their Open House to highlight fire safety in the community as well as opening their doors for tours and activities.

When I ran for City Council, I ran on a platform of repairing and maintaining our local roads in South Lake Tahoe. I knew our community needed a solution to fix the dangerous potholes and cracks that endanger drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. After much planning and thought, I voted yes to place Measure C, a half-cent sales tax measure, on the November 7, 2017 ballot to fix our roads once and for all.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 24th annual Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Golf Classic will be held Monday, October 16 at Edgewood Tahoe.

The Golf Classic is the premier fundraiser for the Club and this year their Board of Directors has a goal of raising over $60,000 for the children of the community.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority has opened the 2017 American Century Championship grant period, encouraging South Lake Tahoe non-profits to apply for a portion of $51,000 to be given to the community.

Work has begun on a stretch of State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay to replace a retaining wall and the extend an existing barrier slab and rail.

The contractor, Stewart Engineering, Inc. has established a staging area at the Eagle Falls parking area on the southbound side of the road. Visitors to the area should note that most, if not all, of the parking spots will be blocked by equipment.

Caltrans said work will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be reversing one-way traffic control so motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.

The Slinkard Fire is currently located on the west slope of Antelope Valley, west of Topaz Lake and eight miles north of Walker, Calif. After being started by lightning on August 29, it has burned through cheat grass, sagebrush and pinyon/juniper.

418 firefighting crew members are working the fire which is located in Alpine and Mono counties in California and Douglas County in Nevada.

Today at the 21st annual Lake Tahoe Summit, the creation of a new partnership of state, federal, environmental, industry, and research representatives working together to protect Lake Tahoe and the surrounding central Sierra Nevada was announced. The effort, the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative, is focused on restoring the health and resilience of the area’s forests and watersheds. It builds on the legacy of work that has been done to “Keep Tahoe Blue,” and a variety of activities already underway in the Central Sierra landscape.

Work to rebuild State Highway 89 along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe from Tahoma just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City is now complete, Caltrans announced today. It also came in $8,000,000 under budget.

Construction on the project started in 2012 when a contractor for Southwest Gas began relocating gas lines that were in conflict with the new drainage systems to be built. That work was completed in 2014. Caltrans’ contractor, Road and Highway Builders, began drainage work in 2013 and started roadwork in 2014.

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

Author Melba J. Ray-Leal will speak on her book, "Women and the Pony Express," in a free event at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 19, at 10:00 am.
