South Tahoe High Boys Tennis Team wins first state championship, to be honored at LTUSD meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School (STHS) Boys Tennis Team took top honors at the 2023 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) 3A State Championships, the first time the school has won the state championship. STHS also has a third-place finish for its doubles team.

The STHS players won the state title by beating Boulder City 12-6 at Gorman High School. They beat Adelson 13-5, then Boulder City 12-6 to bring home the state champion trophy.

For the individual tournament, STHS had Seth Johnson and Brennan Monroe playing in the singles quarterfinals in Las Vegas. Johnson lost to Ido Goren of Adelson 6-2,6-2. Monroe won his quarterfinal round against Austin Gyorfi of Coral Las Vegas 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, then met up with Goren in the next round. Monroe fell to the player from the south, 7-5, 6-1. Goren took the state title.

In doubles, Phillip Roberts/Ryder Tannaci from STHS made it to the quarterfinals but lost to Ike Pappas/Roman Rose of Boulder City 6-2, 6-3. The other doubles team, Ralston Pierce/Brodie Wallisch, met up against Sean Pendleton/Luke Wright of Boulder City in the quarterfinals. The STHS team prevailed and won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Pierce and Wallish then met up with Pappas and Rose in the semifinals, losing the tough battle 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Tahoe players then moved to the third-place round where they played Edmond Allyn/Samuel Lords of Churchill County. Pierce and Wallish won that match 6-0.6-4, bringing the 3A third-place trophy back to South Lake Tahoe.

This was the first State Championship won by a STHS boys' tennis team and the trophy has been placed in the school's trophy case. The team will be honored at Thursday night's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting.

The Varsity team is represented by Brennan Monroe, Seth Johnson, Sebastián Guerrero, Brodie Wallisch, Ralston Pierce, Phillip Roberts, Ryder Tannaci, Jay Feeney, Jaedunn Aquino, Jacob Lucas, Emiliano Guerrero, Kole Brouwer, Owen DeLeon, Kacin Elkins, Colten Brown, Keller Fox, Diego Palacios, and Bryce Tiesleu. On their way to the state title, Monroe, Johnson, and Guerrero qualified for the class 3A northern region singles playoffs, and Pierce, Wallisch, Tannaci, Roberts, Feeney, and Aquino qualified for the doubles playoffs.
