SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Disney's smash hit movie comes to life on the South Tahoe High stage as the student thespians present their spring musical production June 9-11.

The high-energy "Disney's High School Musical" will feature the same songs and dances everyone has come to love on the big screen - "We're Breaking Free," "Stick To The Status Quo," and "We're All In This Together." Enjoy the singing and dancing you saw in the movie.

Tahoe Expedition Academy offers Math Enrichment Camp this summer

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Tahoe Expedition Academy (TEA) is taking students on an adventure of the mind this summer. TEA is hosting a Summer Math Enrichment Program (aka “Math Camp”) for students entering grades 5-9 in the 2022-2023 school year. Sessions are two weeks each from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day, Monday through Thursday. Students can attend one, two, or all three sessions.

LTCC honored by statewide organization for Latinx student performance in first-year English

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College was recently recognized as one of the 2022 Excellence in Placement Honorees by the Campaign for College Opportunity. This honor recognizes LTCC’s efforts around ensuring that more Latino/a/x and Black college students can access, are supported through, and complete transfer-level English and math in their first year of college.

South Tahoe Environmental Education conducts spring programming

This week, volunteer educators from the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC) engaged third and fourth graders from four different elementary schools in place-based environmental education. Students were brought to the Tallac Historic site and led around various stations across the site, participating in lessons on local history, watersheds, fire resilience, and trees while interacting with their environment at each station.

Environmental education collaboration takes the classroom outside at Heavenly

STMS Club Live sells Love Bugs for charity

South Lake Tahoe Middle School Club Live has been making Valentine Love Bugs for 20 plus years. It’s a tradition to make Love Bugs during the last week of January and the first two weeks of February. We sell them to peers during our lunch hour and deliver their purchased orders to friends with a Love Bug attached by a string. The best part is that the money goes to a charity that the club selects.

Several South Lake Tahoe students make it onto college honor rolls, dean's lists

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following students from South Lake Tahoe have been named to their respective school's dean's lists and honor rolls. All names were shared by Merit Pages.

Tufts University recently announced the dean's list for the Fall 2021 semester. Among students earning dean's list honors was Charlotte Versavel of South Lake Tahoe. She is part of the Class of 2025. Dean's list honors at Tufts University require a semester grade point average of 3.4 or greater.

LTUSD preparing for possible changes to transitional kindergarten ages

SOUTH LAK TAHOE, Calif. - There is a proposal under consideration in California to provide universal transitional kindergarten (TK) access to all students who turn five during a school year. This will impact districts in California differently depending on space availability. Currently, students are eligible for TK if they turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd. Students who turn 5 by September 1 are already eligible to enter kindergarten.

LTUSD reopens for in-person instruction Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will reopen for in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18. They closed classrooms on Thursday and Friday due to a rise in COVID-19 cases among staff and students.

They will continue to monitor the health of staff to ensure LTUSD can remain operational. Staying home if ill will help the school community return to a healthy status.

419 Western Nevada College students make fall Dean’s List

Western Nevada College has announced that 419 students have been named to the Fall 2021 Dean’s List. For consideration for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Each member of the Dean’s List will receive a congratulatory letter from Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, WNC’s officer in charge, provost and senior vice president.

LTUSD not moving to remote learning at this time - COVID-19 testing for symptomatic staff and students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is experiencing a high volume of COVID-19 cases among staff and students, but schools have been able to operate safely and stay open.

At this time, LTUSD has no plans to shift to remote learning but they are prepared should staff shortages prevent them from operating schools. Currently, that move is not necessary as the current rate of staff shortages and student absences due to COVID-19 is not enough to close schools.

Kudos: Bijou Library contest brings out creativity

As Bijou's new school librarian, I wanted to create something fun for the kids and created 'Disguise a Gingerbread' into your favorite book character contest. I saw a version of this online and thought it was perfect to do before the holiday break.

At the beginning of December, the contest was presented to each class during library time and told the kids to be creative and have fun if they chose to participate.

South Tahoe Fútbol Club now U13 NorCal Gold State Cup Champions

It Took a Village…

Two years ago these boys had tears of sadness after making it to the semi-final of the NorCal State Cup and losing on a cold rainy day. This past Sunday, those tears were now tears of joy, as they were crowned as the U13 NorCal Gold State Cup Champions. According to NorCal Premier Soccer, over 700 teams start the tournament in the age brackets of U11-U13. COVID canceled the tournament last season, then this Fall our entire town evacuated due to fire, followed by no practices because of snow, but still, these boys showed up and played every time they had the chance.

South Tahoe High Lady Vikings now Northern Nevada 3A champs

The South Tahoe High School girls soccer team was victorious in Winnemucca Saturday, beating their long-time rival Truckee 2-0 in the Northern Nevada 3A tournament. The win gives the Vikings a trip to Pahrump, Nevada on November 12 for the state tournament. The state championship game is Saturday the 13th.

During the tournament South Tahoe beat Churchill County 3-1 on Thursday, Spring Creek 1-0 Friday, then the win against Truckee on Saturday.

Mt. Tallac Career Pathways program connecting South Lake Tahoe businesses to interns

Mt. Tallac High School has a new Career Pathways Program that connects students to businesses in the South Lake Tahoe community.

Sara Justice, the Mt. Tallac Career Coordinator, said they are looking for community businesses that are interested in hosting interns. The students need the opportunity to job shadow and learn specific skills in the areas of:

New grant allows LTCC to re-engage adult learners with credits but no credential

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) recently secured a $65,750 grant, allowing for another vital piece to be added to the college’s overall efforts to reconnect with adult learners who have some earned college credits, but no credential or degree.

This grant will further fund a new program called Reconnect to Complete, which helps LTCC to ensure that adult learners in the South Shore community are provided with clear pathways to social mobility and economic stability through education.

SR89 opens from Meyers to Pickett's Junction as Caldor Fire moves to 68% containment

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans has reopened State Route 89 between Meyers and Hope Valley/Pickett's Junction, but US50 and SR88 remain closed. Crews are working to make US50 between Kyburz and South Lake Tahoe safer for the public to travel by cutting down trees and clearing burned debris.

Overnight, firefighters were able to gain more containment line, moving to 68 percent. They continue to work on hotspots and securing containment lines near SR88 and Kirkwood and Caples Lake as well as along Trimmer Peak and Desolation Wilderness.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District to start the 2021/22 school year Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that all neighborhoods on the South Shore have been repopulated after the Caldor Fire evacuations over the past two weeks, school will be starting at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sites on Thursday, September 16.

The final areas of the LTUSD boundary in the areas of South Upper Truckee, North Upper Truckee, and Christmas Valley have now been downgraded to an evacuation warning, and those in the South Lake Tahoe city limits have all warnings removed.

Unprecedented amount of services and financial help as LTCC prepares for Fall Quarter

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) reopens with limited, public-facing support services on Monday, September 13. Students can come to campus on One College Drive and apply and register for classes, meet with an academic counselor, and learn about financial aid options including free LTCC CARES grants of up to $750 and $250 emergency awards for those who live or work in the Caldor Fire evacuation zone and have been impacted by it.

The ravaging toll of wildfires have caused thousands of residences and families in the Lake Tahoe communities to evacuate their homes and be displaced to shelters throughout northern Nevada. The Carson City School District is inviting all evacuated families in Carson City with school-aged children to enroll their students through the McKinney-Vento Students in Transition program.

South Lake Tahoe schools postpone start date another week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD)has announced they will postpone the beginning of the 2021/22 school year.

Due to the evacuation of South Lake Tahoe, LTUSD the District is postponing the school year start date until at least Monday, September 13, 2021. They will continues to monitor the wildfire situation in the basin and provide updates as necessary, but in any event, they provide an update no later than Monday, September 6.

LTUSD and DCSD develop plans for smoky school days

With unprecedented smoke and unhealthy air filling the Lake Tahoe Basin, two area school districts have created policies to deal with students and school days when there is bad air quality.

Douglas County School District (DCSD) didn't have a plan in place for the first day of school Monday, with with AQI levels around 400 PM2.5, students were kept indoors. But by the end of day Superintendent Keith Lewis sent a letter to parents.

South Tahoe High grad returns as new football coach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - From the gridiron at South Tahoe High School (STHS) and Boise State, then through the ranks of coaching football at NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA, Junior College, and High School Jeffrey Cheek is returning home.

The 1996 STHS graduate has been hired as his alma mater's new football coach.

LTUSD offering week of free summer enrichment camps for grades K-12

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is offering a week of free Summer Enrichment Camps for students in grades K-12 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday-Friday August 9 - 13. All classes/grades will start each day at South Tahoe Middle School.

Lake Tahoe Community College holds graduation ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) held an in-person graduation ceremony for the classes of 2021 and 2020 on Friday, June 25.

There were 188 graduates this year. Twenty-six of them were part of the Lake Tahoe College Promise program, meaning they earned their degrees tuition-free (along with a lot of other perks).

113 of these AA degrees were degrees for transfer, guaranteeing those students either a seat at a California State University or a University of California. The graduation also celebrated 15 vocational certificate earners.

413 WNC students make Spring Dean’s List

Western Nevada College’s latest group of students to earn Dean’s List honors has demonstrated how outstanding students can make the necessary adjustments to excel in higher education.

Despite taking most of their classes online during the COVID health pandemic, 413 students made the college’s Dean’s List.

To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

South Tahoe High graduate Zoe Brosch commits to San Diego State

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After graduating from South Tahoe High on Friday, Zoe Brosch is now making plans to head to San Diego State University where she will be part of their track and field team. Zoe will be participating in throwing events - hammer, shot put, and discus.

Having started in the throwing events during her sophomore year, Zoe hasn't had that much opportunity to participate with her junior year canceled due to COVID-19 and a shortened senior year with just five meets. She had great success in 2019 and 2021 and is excited to see how far it takes her in college.

Seventh graders celebrate the end of a year of Tahoe Garage School

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Parents and students had to get creative in navigating the school year in the middle of a pandemic, and nothing may have been more out of the box than the Tahoe Garage School.

What started out as a temporary solution for the first few weeks of the 2020-21 school year, ended as a full year of 7th grade for eight boys in a garage. Yep, a garage.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With COVID-19 cases falling and more community members receiving the vaccine, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is able to host a more traditional, in-person graduation ceremony this year on its soccer field.

Commencement will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, with limited guests and college staff, and faculty on hand to celebrate the Class of 2021’s remarkable achievements. Students who graduated last year with the Class of 2020 are also welcomed back to this year’s ceremony to enjoy a more traditional event with their loved ones.

50th graduation class from Western Nevada College includes local residents

Western Nevada College will celebrate the achievements of its 2020-21 graduates on Monday and Tuesday in Carson City and May 27 in Fallon. Collectively, the three drive-through ceremonies will honor 641 students who are approved to receive 669 degrees and certificates of achievement.

One of WNC’s largest Jump Start graduation classes — 140 — will be celebrated as these students graduate with an associate degree as they are graduating from high school.

LTUSD prepares for Phase 4 - all students in full day in-person classes four days per week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, April 26, Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is moving to full-day bell schedule at all schools along with an adjusted transportation plan.

Elementary schools will have full-day instruction Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

LTUSD School Board meeting Tuesday - Virtual and in-person

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time in over a year, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will invite the public back into the board room for its next meeting on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.

While the meeting will be broadcast via Zoom, the board room will open to accommodate up to 20 observers. Should the maximum capacity be reached, attendees will be asked to also participate via this Zoom link.

Educators Summit focused on growing Nevada teacher pipeline

Western Nevada College Education (WNC) instructor Sarah Lobsinger is co-leading the first Future Nevada Educators Summit on April 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The virtual summit is a joint effort led by seven Nevada System of Higher Education institutions, including WNC, the Nevada Department of Education, and other teacher licensure networks. The goal of the summit is to grow Nevada’s educator preparation pipeline.

LTUSD prepares to expand school day for students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will start having a longer school day starting April 26, 2021.

The students will return from Spring Break on April 19, then start attending school for full days April 26.

Grades TK-5 will continue attending class in person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday but their day at school will be longer.

LTUSD kindergarten registration dates announced

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will hold kindergarten registration from April 26 to May 14 for the school year starting in the fall.

Parents need to call the school at this time and set up a registration time.

The South Tahoe High School Drama Department presents Almost, Maine a play by John Cariani comprising of nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine.

The play was filmed entirely on the South Tahoe High/Tahoe Arts and Design Academy (TADA) Theatre Stage during COVID-19 and it will be streamed to the public several days in April.
