Destination Stewardship Plan increases pace

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council is accelerating the vision and actions outlined in the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan to improve the way people, communities, and the environment benefit from a thriving tourism and outdoor recreation economy. The council has announced the hiring of its first Managing Director, Nettie Pardue, and the formation of “action teams” aligned with the plan’s strategic pillars.

Tour Lake Tahoe as never before - Circumnavigate with TERC

Join the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) for the 4th annual circumnavigate Lake Tahoe, a fundraising event to support science around the lake and beyond while kayaking Lake Tahoe. Ahead of big storm, Ski California expands safety education efforts with new ‘Deep Snow Safety’ video

Ski California is expanding the content available as part of its award-winning Mountain Safety Guide with the upcoming release of its newest video focused on deep snow safety. Created to educate skiers and riders about the risks of deep snow immersion, how to avoid it, and what to do if you or someone you’re with becomes immersed, the video was released Monday.

“Ski California’s 36 member resorts in California and Nevada regularly see storm totals that are measured in feet, not inches,” said Mike Reitzell, Ski California president.

SNO-Parks offer safe and fun space to enjoy the snow around Lake Tahoe

There are 18 SNO-Parks on U.S. Forest Service land in California, ten in the Lake Tahoe Basin with many others just a short drive away. The parks offer cleared parking for vehicles, and opportunities for non-motorized winter activities including cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snow play. A handful of SNO-Parks offer access to both motorized and non-motorized activities.

Using the SNO-Parks keeps drivers off the sides of US50, SR89, and SR88 where cars are often parked in the lane of travel, with young children walking along the roadway and/or sledding into traffic.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe keeps slopes open late on Fridays, announces other specials

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is bringing back its popular “Open Late Fridays” starting this Friday, February 23. For the rest of the season, the resort will stay open two additional hours on Fridays, spinning select chairlifts until 6 p.m. and making the most of longer days and mid-winter snow conditions. The two-hour extension of its operations on Fridays allows skiers and riders to take “bonus runs” or kick off the weekend with an afternoon on the mountain.

Clean Up The Lake Echo Lakes pilot research shows less litter than Lake Tahoe

Clean Up The Lake (CUTL), a 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit, completed its first SCUBA-enabled pilot research project in Echo Lakes, California to evaluate litter accumulations and survey for aquatic invasive species (AIS).

Main trails to popular Burney Falls to close during 2024 Season

BURNEY, Calif.— California State Parks announced the temporary closure of the main trails that provide access to the highly-visited falls at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. Many from the Lake Tahoe and Western Nevada areas visit the park, either while passing it on SR89, or using it as a destination camping spot.

Ski With A Ranger to start soon at Heavenly

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced the return of Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Skiers and snowboarders are invited to Ski with a Ranger beginning Friday, Jan. 26, 2024. Tours will depart from Tamarack Lodge at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one hour and will continue through March 29, conditions and weather permitting.

Sierra State Parks offers ranger-guided full moon snowshoe tours

Black bear darting across Heavenly Ski Resort run gaining international attention

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A skier on the Ridge Run at Heavenly Ski Resort on Sunday caught more than just the epic scenic views the run is famous for. TikTok user @Tao7570 caught the moment a bear darted across the run in between skiers and boarders on his phone Sunday, December 10, 2023.

It isn't uncommon for wildlife, bears included, to be seen around the ski resort and the rest of Lake Tahoe. The black bear population in the Lake Tahoe Basin numbers in the hundreds.

3rd annual Tahoe Backcountry Safety Awareness Week starts Monday

From athlete panel sessions about backcountry safety to guided on-snow events and a film fest, the third annual Tahoe Backcountry Safety Awareness Week is chock full of events and online content curated by Take Care Tahoe. From December 11-16, 2023, both novice and experienced backcountry enthusiasts will have opportunities to learn how to safely recreate in the backcountry this winter.

Residents and visitors invited to “heal the land” at 26th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Each year since 1997, the League to Save Lake Tahoe has rallied hundreds of volunteers to revitalize forests, meadows, marshes, and streams damaged by natural disasters, development from decades past, and agriculture. This fall’s Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days event on Sept. 16 will focus on restoring an area impacted by the disastrous 2021 Caldor Fire, along with a popular beach on the Lake’s south shore.

The Eldorado Forest Interpretative Association offers free guided Interpretative hikes in and around the Carson Pass area throughout August and September. These vary from 45 minutes like our historical Devil's Ladder hike to our 3 hour water color painting hikes. We offer Junior ranger hikes for our youth (5-15 years old), and we offer a walk among the trees and flower hikes as well. Please see our attached schedule for specific details on dates and descriptions. We recommend that participants call the Carson Pass Information Station at 209-258-8606 to ask more questions and reserve a spot.

The Eldorado National Forest Interpretative Association will offer a free Junior Ranger Scavenger hike on Friday, July 28th, at 10:00 AM which starts at the Carson Pass Information Station on HWY 88. It will be a 1 hour scavenger hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. Youth 5-15 are invited to learn more about the Carson Pass and the Mokelumne Wilderness to earn a Junior Ranger Badge. All participants who complete the hike will earn their badge! We recommend that participants wear good shoes and bring water.

Wild Flower Hike at Carson Pass

On Thursday, July 27th, the Eldorado National Forest Interpretative Association (ENFIA) will be offering a free wild flower hike, starting at 10 AM at the Carson Pass Information Station on HWY 88. We recommend that you wear good shoes, bring water and bug spray, and perhaps some snacks. This hike will go to Winnemucca Lake and should be about 2 and a half hours. Participants should call 209-258-8606 to reserve a spot as we are limited to 12 spaces total.

18th annual Tahoe Bike Month draws record participants

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif – There was a record number of participants during this year's 18th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge - more people than ever out of their cars to help improve Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition. The two of them once again teamed up to organize the basin-wide celebration through the month of June.

Sierra squirrels find their niche mid a changing climate

As the climate changes, many species are expected to adjust where and how they live. Some are expected to seek cooler elevations as it warms, but what happens to species already at the top of a mountain? A study of squirrels living in California’s high-elevation Sierra Nevada indicates that climate is only one factor to consider when trying to predict where an animal will make its home in a changing world.

Final four in Tahoe Trails Madness

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - It's March Madness not only on the basketball court but also in the Lake Tahoe trail system! The Tahoe Fund created its own bracket to determine the most popular trail around the Lake Tahoe Basin. It started with 16 trails from four regions.

The Final Four are the Eagle Rock Trail (north), Rubicon Trail (west), Marlette Flume Trail (east), and the Star Lake Trail (south).

The matchups are:

Mt. Rose Ski Area at Lake Tahoe offers late skiing on Fridays, spring specials

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - For the rest of the season, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe will stay open late on Fridays, spinning select chairlifts until 6 p.m. Making the most of daylight saving and incredible snow conditions, the resort is extending its operations by two hours on Fridays to give skiers and riders the opportunity to take “bonus runs” this spring.

The $59 “Ski G.I.F.” Friday Daily Special discounted lift ticket after 12 p.m. makes Fridays even more special with the later skiing and snowboarding PLUS a great deal on tickets.

League to Save Lake Tahoe shares results of science and innovation projects

Samuel Adams Air and Après rescheduled at Heavenly Mountain Resort

Agencies release first-ever Tahoe Regional Trails Strategy, webinar planned

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Buried beneath an ever-deepening blanket of snow in the Lake Tahoe Basin lie more than 580 miles of official dirt trails that provide recreation, transportation, fitness, and fun for those in the outdoors. For the first time ever, a coalition of Tahoe partners has developed a Tahoe Regional Trails Strategy to take a basin-wide perspective to trail planning and building. The strategy released this week serves as a blueprint for a connected and accessible dirt trail network for Tahoe.

Two Lake Tahoe area ski resorts first to announce extended seasons

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With epic amounts of snow this season, Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl are the first two Lake Tahoe area resorts to announce later closing dates than normal.

Winter Trek for 5th graders begins Jan 23 at Heavenly Mountain Resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has announced the 2023 Winter Trek Conservation Education Program at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Winter Trek is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 23, and will continue through the end of March, weather permitting. Field trips are approximately three hours long and will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays, excluding holidays. Reservations are required and will open Monday, Jan. 9.

New Lakeview Express officially opens at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe officially cut the ribbon on its new Lakeview Express chairlift on Thursday.

The $7.5M Lakeview zone project was the largest capital improvement project in the resort’s history and changes the way skiers and riders experience the mountain. Lakeview Express caters to low-level and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and the new Lakeside trail offers expansive views of Lake Tahoe. It is the preferred route to access the popular Around the World trail.

Avalanche Awareness series continues in South Lake Tahoe
