Auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar

Event Date:
July 10, 2018 - 7:00pm

Jesus Christ Superstar, one of the original rock operas, will be performed at Lake Tahoe Community College in October, and directors are holding auditions for singers, dancers and musicians on July 10 in the school's Duke Theater.

From the director: The musical is not clean and precise like say “Hamilton”. It is raw, passionate and messy. It is true 70s rock and the instrumentals are as important as the vocals. The story is specific but also universal in the struggle of power and truth. This production will focus on the universal, taking the last days of Jesus and moving them out of place and time focusing more on relationships and the human struggle. Musically we are aiming for the feel of the 1970 concept album (minus the symphony orchestra)

All roles are open. THERE IS NO AGE OR GENDER REQUIREMENT FOR ANY ROLE. However, all songs must be sung in the original key, If you can own the song and the character, you will be in the running.

Specific roles being auditioning for and song pieces we will be using:

Jesus: - Gethsemane (“If I die what will be my reward…. To the end.”) Simon Zealots/Poor Jerusalem (“Neither you, Simon, nor the fifty thousand…to the end”)

Judas: - Heaven On Their Minds (“Listen Jesus to the warning I give…. To the end.”) Judas’ Death (“Christ I know you can’t hear me… through “He scares me so.”)
Mary: – I Don’t Know How To Love Him (“Should I bring him down….To the end”)

Caiaphas: – This Jesus Must Die (“Fools you have no perception… To the end.”)
Pilate: – Pilate’s Dream (“And next the room was full of wild and angry men…. To the end.” Trial by Pilate (“Don’t let me stop your great self-destruction…. To the end”)

Simon: – Simon Zealots (“There must be over fifty thousand…. To the end.”)

Herod: - Herod’s Song (“Hey! Aren’t you scared of me Christ? .... To the end.”)

If you wish to play any of the above major roles, YOU MUST COME PREPARED to sing the pieces listed with the role(s) you wish to audition for.

Other smaller roles and Chorus: If you are not looking for a major role (there are minor roles as well as general chorus) then if you can, try to find one of the above songs you can sing. Otherwise we will work you on something you can sing at the audition.

DANCERS: This production will feature a lot of choreographed movement/dance. Please come prepared to learn and work a number from the choreographer. Dancers will not be required to sing unless they also want to be considered for a major role.

MUSCIANS: This is not a production where the musicians learn numbers then come in a couple weeks before opening, work with the cast, then hide in a corner and play the show. Musicians in this production will be fully onstage as part of the whole. We also intend to work cast and band together throughout most of the rehearsal process. This show needs an organic integration of singers and band. We will be using an eleven piece arrangement. We are looking for Guitar players, keyboardists, woodwinds, Trumpet and horn. This is a labor of love and musicians (like the singers and dancers) will not be paid. If you are interested contact Musical Director Sue Kinney at; playsharp2@yahoo.com to schedule a meeting/audition.

REHEARSALS BEGIN AUGUST 27. Rehearsals will be weeknights up to production week. We will begin with dancers, singers and musicians working an individual night each to get the basics down. After we get a few things learned and staged we will begin to integrate.

PERFORMANCES WILL BE OCTOBER 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 at the Duke Theatre.

WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR AN ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/STAGE MANAGER AS WELL AS BACKSTAGE HELP If you are interested in being Assistant Director/Stage manager contact Director David Hamilton at hamiltonda@att.net If you would like to work backstage (sets, lighting, props, costumes, etc.) simply show up at auditions and we will get you set up. Experience is good, but not necessary.
