American Cancer Relay for Life - A Joyous Celebration of Survivors!

Event Date:
August 11, 2012 - 11:00am

Come to the American Cancer Relay for Life; Say hello to our Poster family, Anita Smith and grandchildren, Chase and Jenna. The Relay, to be held at Kahle Park on Aug. 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., is to raise awareness, celebrate Survivors and promote funds for further research.

The day's activities begin with the Opening Ceremony at 11:00 a..m., at which time the survivors will lead the first lap. All survivors are welcome to attend a free lunch at 12:30. Call Maryon Tilley, 775-586-8330 to respond. There will be a series of fun theme laps throughout the day. For more information on those, call Melissa Reed at 775-828-2214. Entertainment, music, vendors, the Bounce House, an exciting silent auction, are only some of the day's activities. The Yum truck will sell food and donate their proceeds to the relay. There is Canine for Cure parade at 7:00. Bring your dogs and dress them and yourself in a Disney team. The Luminary event, at 9:00 p.m. is one of the most stirring sights you will see. For $10, you can donate a bag in memory of a loved lost one, or in honor of a survivor. The bags are lit with battery-charged tea candles and placed side by side on the field. At ten p.m. there is a special lap for veterans.

Anita and her grandchildren are a shining example of what the strength of family unity. love and optimism can do in the fight against Cancer. Anita has aggressive breast cancer and is in a clinical trial program. Simply put, this means she doesn't know if she's receiving real medication or a placebo. She shrugs her shoulders, smiles and says "I feel fine!" When asked why they want to take part in the relay, Jenna and Chase simply say..."Because we want our grandma around for a long time".
