El Dorado County backs Governor's 'Stay at Home' order - Do not visit to recreate or vacation

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Hotels, motels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds are to be used only to house homeless, COVID-19 emergency workers or continue to house residents according to an El Dorado County directive issued on Tuesday. Staying in one of these types of temporary housing is not considered "essential" by Governor Newsom's March 18th "Stay at Home" order.

Parents and students can have fun with science and TERC

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is closed, but they are sharing with parents, teachers, students, caregivers a list of free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) resources.

Due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic schools across the country, including UC Davis, are shut down. TERC has been closed its science centers and suspended regular program offerings.

They said they realize the challenges many parents who have had to home school their children may need help getting through the normal day-to-day schooling.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office: Gardnerville man fatally shot was attempting a home invasion

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified a 36-year-old Gardnerville man who died Saturday from apparent gunshot wounds.

Joshua McCarthy, 36, was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with a homeowner in the 1400 block of Bumblebee Drive while attempting a home invasion, during which the homeowner shot McCarthy, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release.

McCarthy was not known to the homeowner.

City of South Lake Tahoe asks lodging industry to not rent to visitors during "Stay at Home" order

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Interim Police Chief Shannon Laney sent out a letter to vacation homeowners and lodging properties on Monday, telling them to cease renting to non-exempt short-term visitors. California Governor Newsom issued a state-wide Stay at Home Order on March 19, 2020, which bans all non-essential travel, including staying in accommodations in Lake Tahoe.

Barton Foundation opens COVID-19 Response Fund for community aid

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the anticipated impact of coronavirus COVID-19 in the area, the Barton Foundation has created a COVID-19 Response Fund aimed at helping community members and healthcare workers affected by the outbreak. Barton Health will match donations up to $75,000 to build the fund and help provide relief for residents.

Fatal shooting in Douglas County under investigation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Department (DCSO) Is investigating a shooting that left one dead in Gardnerville.

At 9:31 p.m. on March 21, 2020, DCSO deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area of the 1400 block of Bumblee Drive. When they arrived they found a deceased male, a victim of gunshot wounds.

Deputies located, detained and interviewed all parties they believed to be involved.

Lake Tahoe bus schedules may change due to conoravirus; Input sought

STATELINE, Nev. - Rider input is needed by the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) in order to best determine their bus routes during the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19.

TTD is asking riders to contact them with what routes and runs are most important. In the meantime, they have implemented safety measures for both riders and employees to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra creates online auction in place of Elegant Evening

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra has arrived at the very difficult decision to cancel its 31st annual Elegant Evening celebration originally scheduled for April 18, 2020. With the casinos closing and guidelines from the Center for Disease Control advising people to not attend large functions, the event will not be held this year.

The California State Public Health Officer and Director of the California Department of Public Health have ordered all individuals living in the State of California to stay home or at their place of residence, except as needed to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sectors.

Lake Tahoe Community College to close campus Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif, - The entire campus of Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed to students, the public and most employees starting Friday, March 20 due to the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation.

On Thursday, both California Governor Gavin Newsom and El Dorado County issued shelter-in-place orders, the state's order beginning Thursday and the County's Friday night.

The South Lake Tahoe campus was nearing the end of the winter quarter when the announcement was made.

El Dorado County Superior Court limiting access in response to COVID-19

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Due to the current public health crisis, the El Dorado County Superior Court will be limited access to courthouses, effective immediately. They currently plan to resume normal operations on April 17, 2020, though with the rapidly unfolding coronavirus situation, this could change.

Courtrooms will be practice social distancing, including at least two seats between people in the gallery. Members of the public are strongly discouraged from attending court proceedings unless they are statutory support persons or those who have been subpoenaed.

City of South Lake Tahoe declares local emergency

Family Resource Center closes and cancels annual Cinco de Mayo celebration due to COVID-19 concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Family Resource Center in South Lake Tahoe has closed out of concern of the spread of the COVID-19 virus and recommendations from health professionals, LTUSD and the State of California.

They plan on reopening on April 12, 2020.

Their therapeutic service clients will be contacted to have phone/internet discussions. All classes though are suspended as are meetings and food distribution.

The nonprofit also had to cancel its 17th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival and March 26 Immigration Forum on March 26th.

LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is on a delayed start of 10:00 a.m. this morning to allow time for snow removal operations to catch up around town.

LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Some utilities to cease temporary shutoffs due to impacts from COVID-19 pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As residents face not only health uncertainties but also financial and employment uncertainties, three utility companies have announced they have suspended service disconnections for non-payment due to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 health emergency.

So far, Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas and NV Energy have all made this announcement, but each has different procedures at this time.

Liberty Utilities has suspended service disconnections for non-payment. This temporary suspension, through at least May 1, 2020, includes residential and business customers.

Governor orders all Nevada K-12 schools to close Monday through at least April 6

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced Sunday that all K-12 schools in the state will close through early April as the state looks to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

They will close through at least April 6. Sisolak said further closures are possible, depending on the state of the pandemic at that time.

“I realize this will cause hardships for our families, our students, and our school staff,” he said. “I assure you we have not reached this decision lightly.”

Vail Resorts shutting down all North American operations, including those in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Vail Resorts announced Saturday that they are suspending the operations of all of their North American mountain resorts, retail stores and corporate offices beginning tomorrow, March 15, 2020, for at least one week (through March 22) to assess the rest of the season.

This includes Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Resort and Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area.

South Lake Tahoe and all other El Dorado County schools to close starting Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All schools in Lake Tahoe Unified School District and the rest of El Dorado County will be closing for at least a week, starting Monday, March 16, 2020.

The decision was made for the safety and wellness of students, families, and school personnel due to the current threat of the world-wide coronavirus COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in El Dorado County.

LTUSD asks students and staff to self-quarantine if returning from any COVID-19 infected area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sent out a letter to all students and staff concerning the district's Pandemic Preparedness Plan in regards to travel and self-quarantine.

Effective Monday, March 9, 2020, all students and staff returning from travel out-of-the-country or from COVID-19 infected areas in California or other areas of the United States are strongly recommended to self-quarantine in their home for 14 consecutive days beginning the date of their return to South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary cancels annual St. Patrick's Celebration due to Covid-19 concerns

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club has decided to cancel its 52nd annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration planned for March 20, 2020, but people may still participate in an online auction and Hawaiian vacation raffle.

The club said, that though no cases of the CoronaVirus Covid-19 have been confirmed in this area, they wanted to keep with its commitment to benefit the community and not hold the popular event.

Census letters to be mailed out this week in South Lake Tahoe and around the country

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting Thursday, residents will begin to receive an initial invitation to respond to the 2020 Census.

Depending on how likely the area is to respond online, households will receive either an invitation encouraging them to respond online, by phone or on a paper questionnaire.

CAPP Fund created to help South Lake Tahoe high school students with college application costs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new nonprofit organization based on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe has been formed to help high school seniors apply for colleges by picking up the application fees.

The CAPP Fund was opened in 2020 with a goal of increasing access to higher education by helping high school seniors at both South Tahoe High School and George Whittell High School with the costs of a four-year college application. Each application costs between $60 and $100 and the costs can add up when seeking the college(s) of their choice.

Pink Heavenly event canceled to limit chance of spread of coronavirus COVID-19

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pink Heavenly, the annual fundraising event at Heavenly Mountain Resort to raise funds for Barton Health's cancer support services, has been canceled.

Originally planned for March 21, 2020, organizers with the Barton Foundation canceled the event to "protect community members, employees and care providers in the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19."

Aging and caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe

Originally from Kauai, Hawaii, Dr. Oishi first traveled to Lake Tahoe in 1979 and has made South Lake Tahoe his second home ever since. South Lake Tahoe City Council narrows down list of city manager candidates to four

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council narrowed down their candidate pool for the open city manager position to four during a special closed session meeting Monday, March 2, 2020.

The names of the four candidates will be released later this week according to the SLT Communications Manager Chris Fiore.

The public is invited to a reception with the finalists on Monday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Idle Hour, 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Final interviews will be held in closed session following the Council's March 10 meeting.

Nominations sought for El Dorado County Senior of the Year

Do you know an outstanding older adult or a married couple aged 60 years or older who has performed exemplary work in El Dorado County, both in South Lake Tahoe or on the West Slope, as a volunteer? Consider nominating them for the Senior of the Year Award.

After testing nearly every hybrid on the market including products from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Ford. Toyota’s 2020 Avalon hybrid is the best yet (actually it is tied with the Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h which essentially share chassis and hybrid system). Usually, the predominant factor in buying a hybrid is fuel economy and while the Avalon is rated at 43/43/43 mpg which is not the highest rating among hybrids, it can clearly outperform those numbers while doing so many other things extremely well.
