DRIVETHEARC, a corridor of electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations spanning from Monterey to Lake Tahoe, broke ground today with a ribbon cutting ceremony in El Dorado Hills, Calif.

The new EV travel highway is the result of an agreement between the State of California and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan's largest public research and development company.

Also in this partnership is the Nissan Motor Co., Nissan North America, Kanematsu and EVgo.

This week's Pet of the Week is Hunter, a very sweet 5-year-old Cat. He is having a hard time of it at the shelter and is very scared.

With the recent vote count on Measure E in El Dorado County still too close to call, the County's Capital Improvement Program and Traffic Impact Mitigation Fee Update have been put on hold.

The County Supervisors had been tentatively scheduled to adopt the two in August, but will now wait until questions raised by the Measure are resolved.

Anne “Annie” Elisabeth Thomas passed away peacefully on Friday, April 29 after a hard fought battle with cancer. Annie was born in Batavia, New York on December 16th, 1955, to Anne Elisabeth McGee (Zehrung) and Herman Fisher.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has hired a new Development Services Director to replace Shawna Brekke-Read, who left the position in December after a year on the job.

City Manager Nancy Kerry today announced the selection of Kevin Fabino for the position. Fabino will be leaving his job as the head of the City of Reedley's Planning, Building and Engineering Divisions and will start the new job in South Lake Tahoe later this month.

The recent reversal of sign ordinance fees reflects on the poor leadership of South Lake Tahoe’s government. After an eruption of dissent from the business community, the City had to reverse its onerous sign permit fees and acquiesce to the demands of the business community.

Change.

It’s happening fast in Reno-Tahoe tourism, from millennials’ growing influence in the marketplace to changing preferences among visitors, according to a new industry analysis.

And the quicker the region embraces it, the better.

“Reno-Lake Tahoe Tourism Industry – Navigating Change,” is a white paper written by South Lake Tahoe-based SMG Consulting and its president, Carl Ribaudo.

The following letter was sent to the Governing Board of Directors for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. It's author gave it to South Tahoe Now for publication:

Dear Chair Beyer and Governing Board Members:

I am writing to you in support of your adoption of the Tahoe Valley Area Plan being put forth to you by officials of the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Twenty years and many meetings later, the Tahoe Valley Area Plan unanimously passed the first of two final hurdles at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

In the first reading to adopt the three resolutions which make up the plan, Mayor Hal Cole and the City Council thanked everyone who was part of the long process to start shaping things up at the "Y". "This plan will have an impact for years to come," said Cole.

Some children live a life characterized by habit and routine. Imagine them being forced to leave their life behind all because there wasn’t enough space and funding. This is what foster children in Lake Tahoe are forced deal with. Primarily, SLT should pass a General Obligation Bond, and, though the cost of raising a child is exorbitant, this cost could be ameliorated by support from passing a General Obligation Bond measure.

El Dorado County Animal Services is pleased to announce it has completed the adoption process for all of the horses that came from the former Grace Foundation facility in El Dorado Hills. "We want to thank everyone in the community and all the volunteers who either adopted a horse or provided support to our agency through this process," said Don Ashton, Director of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, which includes Animal Services.

Almost twenty years later and the Tahoe Valley Area plan isn't in place, yet. John Hitchcock, the City of South Lake Tahoe Planning Manager, gave the Council another presentation on the status of the plan and where things stand as of today during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

First proposed in the early 1990's, the resurrection of the Tahoe Valley Area plan made great strides towards adoption in 2014 with Hitchcock holding four public meetings where input was requested, presenting the plan to TRPA three times, three times to City Council and twice to the planning commission.

The newest holiday tradition in South Lake Tahoe doesn't involve caroling, Rudolf or Christmas stockings. What is does involve is a group of community members enjoying the holiday season while wearing their best Winter White outfits and raising money for charity.

In a stunning step backwards from transparency the El Dorado County Planning Commission, holding a difficult to attend morning week-day workshop on the Draft Meyers Area Plan at City Hall in South Lake Tahoe on October 16, 2014, recommended yesterday that any new Meyers Area Advisory Council formed by the Board of Supervisor after adoption of a Meyers Area Plan not be subject to California’s Open Meeting Law, the Brown Act.

The seven candidates for South Lake Tahoe City Council were at Wednesday nights Candidate Forum at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The Tahoe Chamber and Tahoe Daily Tribune hosted the evening which had Rabbi Evon Yakar moderating the questions and answers.

About 100 people showed up to listen to panel who were given questions prepared by the chamber's new political committee as well as those asked by the audience. The questions were asked of different candidates so not everyone was asked the same one.

It’s kitten season! In response to an especially busy kitten season, El Dorado County Animal Services, in partnership with PAWED (People for Animal Welfare in El Dorado County), is offering a limited time reduction on the price of kittens. All kittens at both the Placerville and South Lake Tahoe shelters are currently available for adoption for half-price (only $40).

“The kittens are fun and playful,” said Allison Lozoya, El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter Supervisor. “If you are considering adopting a kitten, come visit us and adopt one or two.”

The South Lake Tahoe branch of the El Dorado County Library has a full schedule of kid's entertainment for the summer.

A coalition of all counties present at the lake along with residents, environmental groups, legislators and business groups were behind the Tahoe Regional Plan and urged its adoption in 2012. Since that time, the Sierra Club and "Friends of the West Shore" have sued (in February 2013) to oppose the plan, lost their motion (April 2014) and now, as of May 7, have filed an appeal to the court's decision to uphold the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.
