Latest storm exiting Lake Tahoe, next one due Friday night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Winter weather has arrived in Lake Tahoe! The second of three storm fronts is finishing up Thursday night with the storm warning expiring at 4:00 a.m. Friday. But Mother Nature isn't done yet.

Another Winter Storm Warning goes up for the Lake Tahoe Basin at 1:00 p.m. Friday and will be in effect until 3:00 p.m. Saturday. A break in the weather precipitation will occur Friday morning which will make this the best window of opportunity to travel in the Sierra.

Two upcoming movie premiers to raise funds for Sierra Avalanche Center

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Have some winter fun and help kick off the ski season with a trilogy of movie premiers dubbed "Lord of the Boards." The Lake Tahoe premier of the feature movie, Blank Collective's film Before Blank, is headed to both north and south ends of the lake courtesy of Local Freshies® with a portion of proceeds going to the Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC).

Quick response keeps Echo Summit fire contained to small area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An illegal and abandoned campfire near the Pacific Crest Trail ignited a fire on Wednesday evening.

Crews from USFS, Lake Valley Fire and Calfire were called to the 5:20 p.m. fire on September 19. They staged at the Echo Summit Caltrans maintenance yard on Highway 50, and when determined to be on Forest Service land, the Engine 42 crew from USFS hiked into the fire location and the others were on call in case needed.

Two months of concerts kick off August 1 at Vahalla Boathouse Theater

For the next two months, the Valhalla Boathouse Theater at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake tahoe will be home to several concerts, starting August 1.

New plan for State Route 89 being developed to alleviate traffic, improve access

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

Save a bear - be smart about food storage/trash disposal in the outdoors

Several Lake Tahoe agencies have joined together to remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in the bear being killed, fines and/or jail time for violators. Every year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat and/or are damaging property. In some cases, the animals are euthanized.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has opened the comment period for proposed management of 1,083 acres on National Forest Lands off the Mt. Rose Highway above Incline Village, Nev.

Flood, wind, avalanche and storm warnings in place: 2 -5' of snow expected above 7500

There are several warnings in place for South Lake Tahoe:

Avalanche Watch - The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a backcountry avalanche watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 7:00 a.m. Friday between Yuba Pass at the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south.

Search and Rescue response under Heavenly Gondola

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Valley Ski Patrol and the Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to an injured skier under the Gondola line on Wednesday, March 15 at about 12:23 p.m.

The local 54-year-old woman was backcountry skiing out-of-bounds when she injured her lower leg between the Gondola mid-station and Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Avalanche warnings in place for Lake Tahoe back country and Crystal Bay

March 16 3:00 PM update: Washoe County has issued a Stage 2 Avalanche Alert for the Crystal Bay and Third Creek area. Stage 2 Avalanche Alert Action: In a Stage 2 Avalanche alert, if you choose to evacuate, please do so now or within the next 2-4 hours.

The next and final alert is a Stage 3 Avalanche Alert.

Stage 3 Avalanche Alert Action: A Stage 3 Avalanche alert signifies a shelter-in-place alert and a warning to NOT leave your home for up to 24 hours.

Weather and road condition report for Lake Tahoe

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Interstate 80 has reopened at this time, but tractor-semitrailer combinations are not allowed due to traction concerns. SR88 is closed at the Carson Spur with no time estimated of reopening.Hwy 50 over Echo Summit is reopened after a collision was cleared. Most roads in the Sierra are requiring chains or 4WD with snow tires.

SAR volunteers spend night with skier near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Douglas County, El Dorado County and Washoe County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, paramedics and Blackhawk rescue helicopters all assisted in the location and retrieval of two skiers who went missing at Heavenly Mountain Resort Thursday evening.

Douglas County 911 operators received a call on February 22 at 5:00 p.m. from two male adults who said they were lost at the resort. They said they had some water, but were wet and cold, their cell phone batteries were diminished, and one of the skiers suffered from a medical condition.

Douglas County Search and Rescue recruiting new volunteers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (DCSAR) is looking for physically fit and energetic individuals to participate in its upcoming April academy and join their team.

DCSAR is a highly qualified and respected team comprised of approximately 50 trained volunteer members within the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and responds to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are frequently called out to assist surrounding counties in their rescues, it requires a considerable commitment, but is tremendously rewarding when a life is saved.

Artist, poet and naturalist, Obi Kaufmann cancels visit to SLT Library

Squaw Valley Park to stay open for free snow fun this winter

Finding a spot to build a snowman or do a little snowshoeing will be a little easier this winter as Placer County’s Squaw Valley Park in Olympic Valley will remain open to offer a free snow play option for visitors and residents.

The park’s parking area will be plowed all winter long, creating a free and convenient place to park and play.

Backcountry skiers trigger avalanche near Mt. Rose

Three skiers in the Hourglass Bowl area on Tamarack Peak near Mt. Rose triggered a 600 foot long avalanche around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Nobody was seriously injured though two of the party were slammed into trees and rocks according to the Sierra Avalanche Center.

Heavy new snow was falling rapidly at the time. The avalanche was about three feet deep and 200 feet wide.

A group of 4 or 5 were skiing in the area, with three of them involved in the slide. Two of the skiers lost their skis and another had a possible broken ankle.

After a winter of historic snowfall and atmospheric rivers, what will 2017-18 have in store?

That has yet to be seen, but many resorts around the Lake Tahoe Basin are making plans for opening even without that "one good dump."

Truckee "Secret Garden" open for tours after public gains access

Truckee has it's own "Secret Garden," a lush valley full of rare carnivorous plants and threatened bird species that has been preserved and kept from the public for more than 100 years.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Nature Conservancy partnered together and bought over 1,200 acres in the Lower Carpenter Valley for $10.3 million, 600 acres that is so sensitive that initially the only access with be through guided tours. 637 acres were purchased last year and treat hikers and mountain bikers to Crabtree Canyon. The final 80-acre parcel is under contract for purchase by the partners.

Tahoe summer camps offered in robotics, backpacking, art and more

Tahoe Summer Camps is offering a wide variety of unique adventures for youth. Their out-of-the-box camps are all based at the north end of Lake Tahoe and reach the adventurous, artistic and maker-spirit of children. Some camps are all day long while others are overnight adventures around the lake.

Tahoe Summer Camps is proud to offer wide a range of camps to satisfy any child’s adventurous spirit. Broken down into art camps, high-tech camps, wilderness camps and lacrosse camps, below are just a few of the options available to children:

South Lake Tahoe 5th-Graders take part in Winter Adventure Program

Wildlife survival, avalanche safety, snowmaking, and environmental restoration are all part of the curriculum at a unique outdoor classroom at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Nearly 300 fifth-grade students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (TLUSD) took part in the EpicPromise Winter Adventure Program over five days in January and March. The program includes a ride up the ski resort’s Aerial Tram, snowshoeing, and getting hands-on learning experiences at a trio of educational stations.

Injured backcountry skier rescued from Lake Tahoe's Jake's Peak

Search and Rescue volunteers were dropped off on Jake's Peak Thursday to help an injured backcountry skier get off the mountain which is located inside Desolation Wilderness at Lake Tahoe.

At 2:30 p.m. on March 30, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) received a call about the injured skier, a 24-year-old man from San Luis Obispo who was in the area on Spring Break. He had been skiing near Jake's Peak when he suffered a lower leg injury and couldn't get out on his own.

Entry is $10 per guest and $5 raffle tickets are being sold before, and during, the event. Pick up your raffle tickets before the event at any Kirkwood Ski Patrol building while you’re out skiing.

Skier caught in avalanche on Mt. Tallac

The Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a skier-triggered avalanche in "The Cross" on Mt. Tallac Saturday. A group of eight skiers had been in the area about 11:00 a.m. and they skied the main entrance to the cross with some wet, loose snow activity observed.

Then, a group of two skiers went to the top of the mountain to descend into "The Cross." The first skier made several turns into the slope which released a slab avalanche.

Team rescues injured backcountry skier in Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office brought together a Search and Rescue team on Sunday, February 26 after they were notified of an injured woman in the Eagle Buttress area that needed to be rescued off the mountain.

The 56-year-old Truckee woman was in the backcountry skiing with a group when she suffered an injury to her leg and was unable to ski out on her own.

Eagle Buttress is located to the north of Eagle Lake near Emerald Bay.

Sierra-at-Tahoe hosts Freeride World Tour qualifying event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Sierra-at-Tahoe will host the second annual Huck Cup, a 2-Star Freeride World Tour Qualifying event on March 3-4, 2017. The Freeride World Tour is a worldwide circuit of freeride skiing and snowboarding events where athletes compete on legendary and challenging terrain at the most renowned resorts around the world. The event will take place in Huckleberry Canyon, 320 acres of backcountry terrain accessed by five gates at the summit of Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Sunday and Monday storm to pack a wallop: 5 ft of snow above 7500 ft; high winds and flooding

The next storm headed to Northern California and Western Nevada is an atmospheric river that is trending wetter, just like the other storms South Lake Tahoe has seen in 2017 according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A Lake Wind Advisory, Winter Storm Warning and and Flood Watch have all been issued for Lake Tahoe.

Seven Principles of Leave No Trace program; Team in South Lake Tahoe to teach and inspire

Leave No Trace is a national program that teaches and inspires people to enjoy the outdoors while also helping to protect it.

While protecting the outdoor environment and keeping it clear and free of trash and debris should be commonplace, it isn't.

The Leave No Trace team was recently in South Lake Tahoe on a vacation but stopped by South Tahoe High to talk to members of Generation Green. Many may remember the team as community members who left last year to travel the country and teach and train along the way.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter was called out to help with an injured skier who in the backcountry with three friends between Donner Lake and Boreal Ski Resort on Friday.

The victim said he and three other skiers had started their day at the Donner Pass Rest Area, hiked up the mountain for some backcountry skiing and then injured his lower leg while skiing down a shoot between two cliffs. The group used a cell phone and called 9-1-1 to request help. They were found near Flora Lake at approximately 7,500 feet in elevation.

This is Miller's 67th feature film and takes a freeski, backcountry, big air, riding, skiing, snow and dog sled adventure through Squaw Valley, Alaska, Crested Butte, Eastern Greenland, Switzerland, Montana, Canada and even Fenway Park.

South Lake Tahoe had 5.13" of rain Sunday; 2-5 feet of snow on the way

The South Lake Tahoe area had 5.13" of rain on Sunday, causing temporary flooding of streets, meadows and some residences and businesses. As the rain left the basin, snow has moved in and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to remain in place until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12.
