Editorial: Vote "YES" on Measure L
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/02/2014 - 8:18amMeasure L is the Library Special Tax on the ballot this year. Twenty years ago the South Lake Tahoe voters passed a library tax where those who owned parcels in the area would be charged $20/parcel per year for the next 20 years to fund the library.
Well, that time period is up so the tax is on the ballot once again. This is not a new tax, just a request for taxpayers to continue paying the same.
Editorial: No on Measure "P"
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/01/2014 - 11:34pmIt always seems like every time we turn the corner someone wants more money, from the tax collector to the grocery store owner. There are many in our community that feel parking meters should go away, but I am not one of them.
Trust me, I don't like paying for things that used to be free, but I feel the benefits of having parking meters in place in South Lake Tahoe far outweigh the 'cons.'

Parking a Hot Topic at South Lake Tahoe City Council Meeting
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/05/2014 - 1:09amPaid parking remains a hot topic in the city which was proven by the packed house at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting. On the agenda was discussion and possible action on an initiative to prohibit paid parking on city streets.
Tahoe 4 Tahoe (T4T), a local group organized to fight paid parking, gathered more than the required signatures to get the initiative put on the ballot, but legal precedence and unforeseen consequences of the proposed initiative led the city council to vote unanimously to have a Fiscal Impact Report completed in the next 30 days.

Success for Calif. Tax Measures May Not Be New Trend
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 11/13/2012 - 7:53amCalifornia voters had rejected every statewide tax measure since 2004 until they approved two of them last week. They also said yes to 70 percent of the local tax and bond measures on last week’s ballot. But this may not be the start of a new trend.
The passage of Propositions 30 and 39 snapped a seven-measure winning streak for the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. But President Jon Coupal says that doesn't mean the attitudes of California voters are changing when it comes to taxes.

California voters to decide on death penalty in November

Opponents include Republican State Senator Joel Anderson, who has tried unsuccessfully to change the death penalty process — including a bill that would have eliminated expensive, automatic appeals.
"To move forward and say that we're going to move these people into life without parole is to ignore what the public has asked for time and time again," said Anderson.
