Bears breaking into cars at Desolation Wilderness trailhead
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/11/2017 - 12:01amIts not just a picnic basket bears have been after at the Bayview Trailhead this week. Some hikers have returned from the trail to find their cars not only broken into, but mauled.
Pictures on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Twitter page have shown windows torn from their frames and the foam from seats pulled apart.
Bears want food, and if food, not matter how small of trace, is left in a car, they will go after it.
These break-ins are a good reminder to not leave food in cars, no matter if the door is locked or not.

Opinion: Clean up South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 06/16/2017 - 9:26amLittering in Tahoe is a big problem. Everywhere you go, there is trash and no one picks it up. People don't throw their trash in the garbage; they leave their trash on the ground and it makes its way into the lake. Other people who pass by it don't pick it up either. The problem started with the tourists who come to the beaches and throw their trash anywhere and they think that it won’t do anything to our lake. Tourists don’t take care of nature and our lake as much as the locals here. Some locals leave their trash everywhere as well.

In order to locate water, electrical and sewer lines in the future, contractors now bury a copper wire just above the line making the task easier should it be needed.

Are Nevada officials hauling bears away for hunting?
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 10:25pmIt's bear hunting season and that's always controversial. This year, the debate is especially fierce in Lake Tahoe where animal activists are accusing the state of Nevada of trapping bears for hunting.
In the past five years, Nevada wildlife officials have caught and moved more than 20 bears out of the Lake Tahoe area into the desert. The Nevada Wildlife Department says it's got nothing to do with hunting, but its own data raises questions about the timing of the moves.

NDOW releases Lake Tahoe bear back into the wild near Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/10/2016 - 6:40pmNevada wildlife biologists released a three-plus year old male black bear back into the forest near the top of Mt. Rose Summit on Monday morning after capturing him Sunday in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe.

August 7, 2016 - 10:00am
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care opens their doors to the public just once a year, and that special day is coming up on Sunday, August 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Their annual Open House gives people a chance to see what happens behind the doors and fences with a tour of their facility.
Learn about the animals they rehabilitate.
This is a free event, wonderful for the whole family! Donations are accepted for the continued care of the bears, foxes and all animals they care for year-round.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is located at 1485 Cherry Hills Circle in South Lake Tahoe.
