I am a big believer in balance. Balancing work and play, exercise and relaxation, the to do’s and the to don’ts. Unfortunately, it seems that many times our virtual see-saw gets pretty lopsided and we’re left stranded in the air with toes dangling, or completely weighed down without any way to get on our feet.

Although they are still an unfortunate rarity, more green gyms are popping up in the United States. They are considered green because their carbon footprint is much lower than the typical huge box gym packed with walls of televisions, rows of cardio equipment (which also have a whole additional slew of TVs), and thousands of tons of carbon-unfriendly stationary equipment. These green gyms tend to be smaller, with the primary carbon footprint generating from their electric usage. Just one treadmill can use anywhere from 500 watts to 1 kilowatt per hour while in use.

There is an epidemic in America of increasing childhood obesity and the ill effects attributed to a chronic sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in fat. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 2/3 of the American public are obese and that childhood diabetics, asthma and cardiovascular risk factors lead to adult morbidity, diabetes and significant psychological impact on the obese children. The organization goes on to state that this may be the first generation in the history of man, that children may not outlive the lifespan of their parents.

Memorial Day weekend will make for near-perfect conditions for fishing in Nevada, Northern California, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams now through the holiday weekend.

South Lake Tahoe resident and Barton Health employee, Stella Ortega, made it to the top 10 on Dr. Oz Show-Transformation Nation: Million Dollar You segment. Ortega is among 10 finalists to earn a spot in the show's season-long initiative. Viewers can vote on which finalist they feel should win the grand prize of $1 million by going to www.doctoroz.com. The winner will be announced on “The Dr. Oz Show” scheduled to air on May 23.

Rehabilitated through Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, a total of six orphaned bear cubs have been returned to the wild this spring, ending the California Department of Fish and Game's 2012 yearling bear release program.
The cubs were found in various locations around the state in the summer months of 2011 and were rehabilitated at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care prior to being judged ready to return to the wild. The state program is ongoing and will continue as new cubs come into the facility.

A Carmichael, Calif., man has been arrested in the 31-year-old murder case of Richard Swanson, South Lake Tahoe police report.
On March 28, 2012 Andrew Sanford, 50, of Carmichael, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the murder of Richard Swanson. The robbery/homicide occurred on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road, according to a press statement.

Following her performance at UNR on March 1, scholar, teacher, and artist Joanna Frueh will conduct a workshop at Sierra Nevada College, 999 Tahoe Blvd., on Friday, March 2 from 1 -3:30pm in David Hall, 3rd floor. Gov. Brian Sandoval said this week that he plans to repeal 654 unnecessary regulations that will assist in the state’s efforts at economic diversification and job creation by making Nevada more business friendly.
In addition to the repeal of more than 600 rules, another 1,100 will be updated as a result of an executive order he issued in January 2011 imposing a one-year freeze and calling for his cabinet to thoroughly review the entire regulatory framework of the state. The review was finalized last week.

Winter weather continues through today in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Ski resorts report up to 2 feet of snow from the system which arrived Friday and continues today. The National Weather Service in Reno reports that a second and much colder storm will move into the area on Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures and bringing more snow. UPDATED 1:30PM: A 21-year-old Walnut Creek, Calif. man was struck and killed by a California Highway Patrol vehicle early Sunday morning, New Year's Day, on Highway 50 near Stateline at Lake Tahoe, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The accident happened between Lake Village and Elks Point Road and was reported around 12:40 a.m. Sunday morning, said NHP Troopers Mike Edgell and Chuck Allen. The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family, died at the scene of the accident.
