There's only a few more hours to register to volunteer for the 19th Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup Event at California State Parks on on Saturday, April 22. The closest opportunity for those in the Lake Tahoe area is at Grover Hot Springs.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers will be doing maintenance and development of the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, weed removal and landscaping at the park in Markleville, 30 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD), California State Parks (Parks) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have scheduled more prescribed burns in the Lake Tahoe area, as long as weather permits the operations.

Starting Monday, April 10, burning may take place near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers.

The California Tahoe Conservancy, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are planning on continuing prescribed fire operations March 27, depending on conditions.

If fire crews get the okay, operations will be near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe - 15 acres at Sunset Stables Property. North of Elks Club neighborhood, East of Upper Truckee River.

South Shore Nevada - Lower Kingsbury Area - 15 acres, Edgewood Creek Area - 40 acres.

If conditions are favorable, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may resume prescribed fire operations beginning today, March 16, 2017. Operations may take place near Tahoe City and Glenbrook and may continue as conditions allow.

On the schedule is the burning of 50 acres of hand piles at Logan Creek Drive and Highway 50 as well as 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High and Rocky Ridge Properties.

With several state parks around the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding Sierra Nevada, budding Van Goghs have a lot of local experience to draw upon as they enter the California State Park Foundation's art contest, "Discover State Parks."

Since the parks offer endless opportunities for inspiration, the Youth Art Contest is a way for young people to draw on those experiences to create art featuring their encounters with wildlife and nature, learning about history and culture or enjoying recreation.

Four separate fires are burning north of Reno, sending smoke throughout Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe basin.

The Virginia Mountains Complex is made up currently of four separate wildland fires, including the Anderson (5626 acres), Sage (4239 acres), Seven Lakes (3063 acres) and Tule (7267 acres) Fires. All of these lightning-caused fires are burning within about 20-miles of each other in an arc about 35-miles north of Reno.

The vast majority of the public lands burning are administered by the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City District.

Several local agencies have teamed together to inform the public on the importance of proper food storage and trash disposal at their Lake Tahoe homes and vacation rentals.

The Sierra State Parks Foundation is excited to announce our first Archives Bus Tour on Wednesday, June 15, 2016. Attendees will meet at Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center for a day of discovery and fun. Hopping aboard the bus at 9am, we will make our way to the California State Archives in Sacramento, with a stop in the heart of Gold Country, the Auburn State Recreation Area. Tickets are $60 ($55 for members) with limited seating. Reservations are required and parking for the day is included in the ticket price.

Prescribed fire operations are scheduled to continue around the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday, March 21, weather permitting.

The areas on the map scheduled to be burned, weather permitting:

A) Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High School and Rocky Ridge Properties, 35 acres of hand piles to be burned by California State Parks starting 3/21/16.
B) Sugar Pine Point State Park - Hwy 89 across from General Creek Campground, 12 acres to be burned by California State Parks starting 3/21/16.

California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations started back up today, February 22, 2016.

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor. Ten acres on Spooner, 15 acres at Logan Shoals, 150 acres at Camp Galilee and 30 acres at Sand Harbor.

On the South Shore, operations are scheduled near Eagle Point Campground, Spring Creek and Panther Road. Five acres in Angora Creek area, 10 acres on Panther, 30 acres at Emerald Bay.

The latest round of funding through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) includes more than $3 million for projects to help reduce wildfire risk in Lake Tahoe communities.

The funding award for Lake Tahoe is part of nearly $40 million going to projects around Nevada to reduce wildfire risk, conserve landscapes, restore wildlife habitat, and improve public recreation. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced the funding awards this January.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are planning to resume prescribed fire operations during the week of January 10-15, 2016.

They will be concentrating on six areas (matching with letters on the attached map):

A. Emerald Bay State Park - 38 acres. Ignite 1/11/16. Expected duration of ignition and smoke, one month.

B. Sugar Pine Point State Park - 26 acres. Ignite 1/11/16. Expected duration of ignition and smoke, one month.

This past summer was Lake Tahoe’s busiest tourist season in recent memory. With the economy rebounding and major population growth projected for nearby metropolitan areas, this summer is also a harbinger of change. We must be prepared to meet the challenges of increased visitation in the future.

Lake Tahoe has been recognized for another important conservation success. Our region’s proactive, collaborative strategy to protect Tahoe yellow cress, begun almost 15 years ago, is working so well that the plant does not need additional protections under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The California Transportation Commission announced this week that it will award nearly $9 million in Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funding to help complete three major bike and pedestrian projects in the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City.

Members of the Lake Tahoe Bikeway Partnership applied for the grants. The partnership formed several years ago to secure funding for critical trail segments to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety and complete the Lake Tahoe Bikeway, a comprehensive multi-use trail network for the Lake Tahoe Region.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, El Dorado County, and members of Tahoe Backcountry Alliance announced today they are partnering to create a coalition of stakeholders to maintain and enhance public access for winter backcountry skiing and snowboarding.

“We’re optimistic about this opportunity to work together to get back some of the access that we have lost in the past, and work to enhance access in the future. Let’s together reclaim and preserve backcountry access in the Tahoe Basin,” said Mike Schwartz and Todd Offenbacher, of Tahoe Backcountry Alliance.

Successful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide today that Tahoe yellow cress (Rorippa subumbellata), a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved the Tahoe Transportation District’s State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project to realign State Route 89 through Tahoe City.

The project realigns State Route 89 to route through traffic over roundabouts and a new two-lane bridge across the Truckee River to reduce transportation conflicts among drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians at the congested pinch point at the Tahoe City “Wye.”

Operations may take place near Tahoe City on Highway 28 between Rocky Ridge and Lake Forest, near Emerald Bay at Eagle Point Campground, the Boat Camp and behind Vikingsholm, Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, and on the East Shore near Logan Creek Drive and the north side of Spooner Summit. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations near Sugar Pine Point State Park, Sawmill Pond, Pioneer Trail and Washoan Boulevard, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Van Sickle Bi-State Park, Luther Pass, Spooner Summit, and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Slaughterhouse Canyon. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

California State Parks, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations near Incline Village, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Tahoe Mountain and Heavenly urban lot areas.

There will be 87 acres of hand piles burned at Sugar Pine State Park, 30-40 acres of hand piles around the North Shore, 122 acres at Meeks Bay, 40 acres around Heavenly Valley and 123 acres on Tahoe Mountain.

Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation will again be hosting Living History Day at Pine Lodge, a celebration of the anniversary of the lodge also known as the Ehrman Mansion, at Sugar Pine Point State Park on July 26, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A new smart phone and tablet app designed to highlight beaches around Lake Tahoe, where they are and how to get to them, has been launched in a partnership with the Tahoe Fund and the California Tahoe Conservancy. The aim is to help more than 2 million Tahoe visitors find their way to the perfect beach outing on the public shores.
