Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Special election held to replace El Dorado County Supervisor Nutting

Six candidates are vying for the open El Dorado County Supervisor Area 2 seat left vacant by the departure of ousted Ray Nutting.

With 100% of the vote counted, Shiva Frentzen led the pack with 30.96% (2,374) of the vote. Troubled and ousted Supervisor Ray Nutting's wife Jennifer is also one of the candidates. She ended up with 13.21$ of the vote.

Two new board members for Tahoe Prosperity Center

Not only has the Tahoe Prosperity Center has been working on issues to create healthier communities around the lake, they have also been welcoming new members to their Board of Directors.

New to the board are locals John McLaughlin, Chief Financial Officer of Edgewood Companies and Ken Riley, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Infrastructure Group, Inc. They join 24 other community members on the board whose goal is to also promote regional sustainability through economic vitality and by being environmental stewards.

City Council Candidates Forum set for September 10

Seven candidates are vying for the three open seats on the South Lake Tahoe City Council in November. Incumbents Angela Swanson, Brooke Laine and Tom Davis are going up against Wendy David, Matt Palacio, Bruce Grego and Austin Sass.

With so many candidates to choose from it will be important come election day to vote for the three you feel can lead the City for the next four years.

Valhalla Art and Music Festival wraps up season with two free concerts

On Sunday, August 17 Valhalla presents the final in the free Concert on the Lawn series. This is a special free kids concert featuring the acclaimed children’s act the Banana Slug String Band. Their music is original and full of inspiring positive messages about taking care of each other and the environment. Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and join sit on the Grand Lawn at Valhalla from noon to 2:00 p.m.

City and Chamber bring back popular business coaching program

Tahoe Tactical Team, the popular business coaching program, is returning due to a federal grant received by the City of South Lake Tahoe. They have joined a partnership with the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce to bring back the program which helps new business owners start up an enterprise or existing business owners take their businesses to the next level.

Kudos: Music on the Beach BAHM!

Thank you to all of those who joined us to kick start the summer season. A big thank you to Zephyr Cove Resort for hosting the Music on the Beach BAHM! this past Tuesday evening. As always, we had a great time at the resort. Offering picturesque lakefront entertainment, food and lodging, Zephyr Cove has something for everyone. We’d like to also thank local band Ike and Martin for providing the exceptional entertainment. A special thanks goes to Harrah’s Lake Tahoe for providing two Sarah McLachlan tickets that were included in the evening’s raffle. Thank you again to everyone who came out.

New Bike Trail in South Lake Tahoe Dedicated on Thursday

The second segment of the Stateline to Stateline Bikeway was dedicated during a ceremony on Thursday. The 1.2-mile shared-use bike path connects Elks Point with Round hill Pines on the Nevada side.

This new stretch adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.

2nd Phase of South Lake Tahoe Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance to be Delayed

After lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

Dedication for Latest Phase of Stateline to Stateline Bike Path

The official dedication of South Lake Tahoe's 1.2-mile shared-use bike path that connects Elks Point and Round Hill Pines and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 12 p.m.

The second segment of the Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway, South Shore Demonstration Project adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles. Meanwhile, the North Demonstration Project is expected to begin construction in 2015 and the first phase will connect Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.

The Board of Directors of California’s South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and myself want to thank South Shore residents for voting in the June 3rd primary. Voting is the opportunity for government to be brought into alignment with the wishes of its citizens. Voting is that precious American right to elect candidates to public office who will govern and shape the future of the community.

RIbbon Cutting at Welcome Home Shoppe, Gifts & Decor

The shop features unique gifts and home decor.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will feature wine and appetizers. Welcome Home will pay the sales tax on any items purchased at the time.

The new boutique is located in the log cabin at 2777 Lake Tahoe Blvd (in front of Tahoe Keys Cafe and adjacent to the car wash).

X Hale Lounge Opening up in South Lake Tahoe

Join the Tahoe Chamber on May 22 at 4 p.m. as they hold a ribbon cutting for the newest South Lake Tahoe club.

South Shore locals looking to diversify their nights out now have another option in X Hale Lounge at Stateline. It is a full-service bar and lounge that serves hookah, which is a flavored tobacco or non-tobacco delivered through a water pipe.

X Hale Lounge also features guest DJs and weekly drink specials.

All community members are invited to the ribbon cutting which will feature hookah samples and $1 drinks for those with a local I.D.

Tahoe Regional Plan Being Challenged in Court by Sierra Club Once Again

A coalition of all counties present at the lake along with residents, environmental groups, legislators and business groups were behind the Tahoe Regional Plan and urged its adoption in 2012. Since that time, the Sierra Club and "Friends of the West Shore" have sued (in February 2013) to oppose the plan, lost their motion (April 2014) and now, as of May 7, have filed an appeal to the court's decision to uphold the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

Supervisor Candidates Field Questions in South Lake Tahoe Forum

The first El Dorado Supervisor Candidate's Forum held in the Tahoe basin this election season was held Tuesday night.

With the June 3rd election just a few weeks away, this was a great opportunity for voters to become informed on the candidate's views on a myriad of topics from teamwork and cooperation to economic vitality and mental health issues.

One such event will be an El Dorado County Supervisor Candidate's Forum hosted jointly by the Tahoe Regional Youth Professionals and the Tahoe Chamber. The two groups will present the forum at the California Conservation Corps on May 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Representatives of the TahoeChamber Government Affairs Committee and TRYP will moderate the discussion in hopes to illuminate candidates' stances of key business issues.

Classical Musicians From Around the World Return to Lake Tahoe Summerfest

The Third Annual Lake Tahoe SummerFest returns to Incline Village for two weekends of classical music.

Concert goers will be treated to world class music under a tent near the lake at the Sierra Nevada College Campus August 1-3 and August 7-9.

The Lake Tahoe SummerFest orchestra is comprised of world renowned musicians representative of international symphonies including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver, among others.

Wayfinding Workshop to focus on signage for Nevada side of the South Shore

Members of the public are invited to participate in a workshop on March 17th hosted by TahoeChamber. This workshop will focus on potentially missing or duplicative highway signs between Cave Rock and Stateline and up Kingsbury. The primary purpose of NDOT’s highway signs is to safely guide drivers to the next city or town. The chamber is interested in discussing additional destinations such recreation in light of the large number of visitors, including those who are from out of the area with many of those not speaking or reading English.

The 2014 Business EXPO – “Tahoe South in ACTION” is only a few weeks away and nearly 90 businesses are preparing for the South Shore’s premier business event of the year. The Business EXPO provides local businesses with the opportunity to showcase their products and services to over 1,200 attendees. Attendees will have the chance to learn more about South Shore businesses while sampling food and beverages from exhibiting vendors. Funds Being Raised to Help South Lake Tahoe Native Ryan Wallace Get New Leg

The South Lake Tahoe community is know for its ability to pull together when one of it own is in need of help, and that is evident once again with the story of Ryan Wallace. The life long local had a rare form of bone cancer which led to the amputation of his leg when he was just 19.

TahoeChamber Wins Award For Publications

TahoeChamber was recognized at the Western Association of Chamber Executives Conference in Los Angeles recently. The award was for their publication Tahoe Future Vision 2020 and for the bi-weekly e-newsletter.
The conference included chamber professionals from 18 western states and Canada.

Grand Opening of South Lake Tahoe's Youth Sports & Recreation

Youth Sports and Recreation celebrated a ribbon cutting on January 31
with Tahoe Chamber on hand to officiate. Owner Tim Wesley invited guests
to tour his facility and learn more about the business, which operates to promote physical activity and provide nutritional education to children ages 5 to 17.

Youth Sports and Recreation also provides a tutoring center for after school care. Instructors demonstrated martial arts while children tried
the various machines available, including stationary bikes that allowed riders to play video games as they cycled.

South Lake Tahoe Community Members Participate in Round Table Discussions

Over 100 members of the South Lake Tahoe community attended the 3rd Annual Tahoe Chamber Community breakfast on Tuesday where they shared their visions of what was needed for success.

Those attending broke up into group discussions on a few topics including what they felt small businesses in the area need in order to be better prepared. Since the event was put on the by chamber, there was also discussion was about what the TahoeChamber.org could provide to improve their member's experiences.

Celebrities Attend Grand Opening of The Landing in South Lake Tahoe

Model and television personality Heidi Klum hit the red carpet in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night to help celebrate the opening of the new luxury hotel, The Landing. She was joined by 10 time Grammy award winner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, local business owners and associates.

The party highlighted what the hotel is bringing to the south shore: a 5 star boutique property with high end amenities, a beautiful onyx bar, a restaurant under the direction of a celebrated British chef, fire pits as well as a new wedding and event venue.

South Lake Tahoe Voted Best Ski Destination

South Lake Tahoe was voted the Best Ski Destination in a highly contested USA Today reader ski poll conducted over the past four weeks.

Citing the beautiful views and fantastic skiing, voters were able to choose their favorite ski destination daily. Sun Valley, Idaho came in second with North Lake Tahoe in third, which shows everyone how popular Lake Tahoe skiing is as a whole.

It takes a Community to Make a Difference and What a Difference a Year Makes

As 2013 draws to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of many this year. It was just a few short years ago, in the midst of the Great Recession, both public agencies and private companies throughout the basin were in the middle of layoffs, service reductions and unemployment hovering above 17%. Concerns regarding economic recovery were significant. Rather than buckling under, we buckled down, got things done and prepared for recovery.

Winter Wine Walk Hosted by Tahoe Chamber

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual Winter Wine Walk BAHM on Thursday, December 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Shops at Heavenly Village.

The walk starts at the Marriott Grand Residence where participants will receive a passport with a list of all businesses participating, a wristband, wine glass and raffle tickets. Participating businesses will then stamp the passport and pour a taste of El Dorado County wines as well as showcasing their store. Free ice skating voucher good for the whole evening.

TahoeChamber offers Microsoft Office Classes

Forest Service Working to Get Some Lake Tahoe Recreation Sites Open

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is working to open many Forest Service-operated facilities and restore public services that had been suspended during the government shutdown, which ended October 17, 2013. “Realizing we’re near the end of our normal operating season in Lake Tahoe, we’re focusing our efforts on those sites that typically remain open for a few more weeks and are extremely popular with locals and visitors alike,” said Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson. “We look forward to opening these and serving our local community once again.”
