For three days, historic Valhalla comes alive for the Holiday Season. Celebrate at the 20th Annual Valhalla Holiday Faire, in the Grand Hall,from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Enjoy the festively decorated rustic estate at this free event, which will feature a Christmas tree, holiday music, 30 local vendors and artisans, as well as performances by the South Lake Tahoe Children’s Choral Society with a special appearance by Santa Claus!

Sallie from the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has these tips to make your Christmas fire safe:

Select a fresh tree with good color and firm, flexible needles that do not easily pull from the branches.

Place the tree in plain water immediately after re-cutting the trunk at least ½” above the old cut. The container you use for your tree should hold 2 to 4 quarts of water. The longer you wait to place your tree in water, the greater the chances are that it will lose the required moisture content to keep it fresh through the holiday season. NEVER place your tree on a wooden stand.

For the last three years there has been a Meyers community Tree lighting ceremony but in order to have the fourth annual event many Christmas lights are needed.

During a lightning storm this year, most of the lights were destroyed. In order to replaced them, the Meyers Community Foundation is raising money.

The tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, December 5 at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to see Santa arrive on a special sled, enjoy cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate and help light the tree's 10,000 lights.

After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.

The Christmas tree permits sold by the U.S. Forest Service in Lake Tahoe are officially sold out as of today! Between the north and the south shores of the lake there were 2,500 permits to sell to those people wanted to cut down their tree on Forest Service land.

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “PEANUTCRACKER – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17th in Reno, Nv. Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker”, PEANUTCRACKER is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Christmas tree permits are sold out but tree cutting permits remain available on BLM lands in the Pinenut Mountains between Carson City and Yerington, the Clan Alpine and Desatoya mountains east of Fallon, and the Excelsior Mountains southeast of Hawthorne.

There's been a run on Christmas trees. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit reports that it may sell out of holiday tree permits as early as Monday, Dec. 10. If you are interested in obtaining a permit, call (530) 543-2694 to learn if permits are still available.
