Revenue for casinos on the South Shore continue to slide according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board who released their gaming revenue figures for the month of October today.

Income before expenses and taxes was $18,213,338 for Stateline casinos.

Net revenue for local casinos is down 3% when compared to figures from October, 2014, bringing their fiscal year total to 14.99% lower than the same period last year.

In the state of Nevada, casinos as a whole experienced a net loss of 2.85%, leaving the fiscal year totals almost even with the the prior year. Their "win" is $887,577,506

There will soon be a new Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City now that the Tahoe Transportation District has secured all of the $33 million needed to complete the State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project and Meeks Bay Trail Project.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of August, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $18,883,321 which is 33.55% down from the same period in 2014.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the big winner was the Boulder Strip in Clark County with income up 29.74%, or $60,246,675. Last month, they were the big loser, this month it was the South Shore.

The state "win" figure was down 1.39% with income of $908,240,074.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of July, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $23,313,076 which is 7.04% down from the same period in 2014.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the big winner was the Elko County with an income up 10.14% for the county, 14.81% for Wendover. The big loser, the Boulder Strip with their income of $60,630,987 down 11.06% when compared to 2014.

The state "win" figure was down .96% with income of $922,886,804.

When Governor Jerry Brown told the residents of the state to cut back their water usage, he had the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) tell each region how much to cut back. That benchmark in South Lake Tahoe was 20%.

For the past three months, residents have cut much more than that. In May, water use at South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) was down 34%, followed by 24% in June and 27% in July. This is on top of the 27% reduction in water use that the district's customer have accomplished since 2007.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures today for the month of June, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $17,613,209 for the month, which is 44% above the same period in 2014. This is the biggest increase in the state which saw a loss of 8.37%.

This reporting period wraps up the fiscal year. The South Shore is up $11,567,637, of 5.66%, over last year.

The biggest loss when compared to last year was the Las Vegas Strip which saw a 16.31% decrease with their take of $445,510,980.

California took the first step June 5 to regulate its nearly 20-year-old medical marijuana industry, one that lawmakers said currently resembles something out of the “wild, wild West.”

AB266 merges what were two competing bills and attempts to set up state regulations that will pass muster with the federal Department of Justice. It was one of dozens of pieces of legislation advancing through the Legislature Thursday as lawmakers faced a Friday deadline to move bills out of their house of origin.

South Shore casinos are faring better than last year, so far.

Figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today show they had a big month in April, 2015 with a gain of 56% over last year. Harrah's, Harvey's, MontBleu, Hard Rock and Lakeside had a net win of $14,520,821.

This boost brings the casinos' year-to-date figures up to a 4.21% gain over last year. So far, the casinos in Stateline have a net win $182,247,183.

Overall, the state of Nevada fared well with a gain of 5.39&.

Heavenly Mountain Resort has received the final approval needed for its major expansion of on-mountain summer activities. After Vail Resorts gained approval from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on March 27, they needed the blessing of the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board, which they received today.

For the fiscal year, the South Shore is up $1,915,009 over last year.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the Boulder Strip once again did the best with a 18.97% increase in gaming win. The biggest loss when compared to last year was North Lake Tahoe which saw a 15.31% decrease with their take of $1,529,528.

The state "win" figure is down 3.15% with income of $951,245,276.

Following the lowest snowpack ever recorded and with no end to the drought in sight, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced actions that will save water, increase enforcement to prevent wasteful water use, streamline the state's drought response and invest in new technologies that will make California more drought resilient.

Heavenly's Epic Discovery project passed their biggest hurdle Thursday as the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's (TRPA) Governing Board unanimously approved the newest year-round recreational experience in South Lake Tahoe. With it, comes a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Epic Discovery will include new zip lines, sky cycle tree canopy tours, a mountain bike park and trails, ropes courses, and interpretive and educational tours to teach visitors about the Lake Tahoe Region’s cultural and environmental resources.

The City wants to recover some of the fees involved in the enforcement of a state mandated stormwater program which requires them to ensure commercial businesses are not discharging waste or pollutants into the storm drain system.

Keeping grease, oil and other contaminants out of the system is the goal of the program. Jason Burke, the City's Stormwater Program Coordinator, told the City Council on Tuesday that he will provide outreach and education to the high profile businesses that use grease and oil on a daily basis.

The California Tahoe Conservancy Board unanimously voted today to award Sierra Business Council (SBC) $50,000 to expand and enhance the Lake Tahoe Water Trail.

The Lake Tahoe Water Trail is the 72-mile scenic paddling route around the shore of Lake Tahoe. SBC plans to improve trail maps; increase wayfinding, trailhead signage, and outreach and education; launch a Lodge-to-Lodge Network; and establish a new Oversight Committee to develop a business plan to create a more sustainable program.

Nevada's sports books took in the second-biggest Super Bowl betting take ever, with $116 million wagered for Sunday's thriller won by the New England Patriots, 28-24, over the Seattle Seahawks.

From that, the sports books won $3.25 million, or 2.8 percent of the total, according to the report Monday by the State Gaming Control Board.

A year ago, bettors put down a record $119.4 million in Nevada sports books with the books the victors, winning $19.67 million after Seattle's 43-8 romp over the favored Denver Broncos.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released figures Friday that show the Douglas County casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a net loss of over $89 million in Fiscal Year 2014. Their total gaming revenue was $184,671,937 which is down 6.1% from the previous year. Total revenue including hotel, food and beverage was $337,090,380, down 3.6%.

In Nevada there were 270 casinos which grossed more than $1 million in FY2014. Together they took in $23,075,800,492 and is a net loss of $743,688,008.

Because of the drought, three wells in South Lake Tahoe have higher levels of contamination. Some wells have been shut-downs and the state of California is investigating.

South Shore casinos posted a win for the second month in a row in September, ending up 7% above the same month last year according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Casinos took in $23,781,570 for a month that saw an overall loss for the state of 5.96%. The state took in $901,697,989.

The biggest "winner" in the state were the casinos on the Boulder Strip who saw an increase of 14.28% while the opposite end of the spectrum were North Lake Tahoe casinos who's win was down 15.44%. They took in $2,194,567.

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a gaming win of $28,419,413 in August, up 32.64% from the same month a year ago according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB).

In figures released today, the NGCB shows the whole state of Nevada was down 3.66% with a net win of $920,291,644.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

The South Shore casinos led the state in wins while casinos in North Lake Tahoe and Mesquite had the biggest losses at 7.25% and 6.64% respectively.

In January, Governor Brown called for California residents to drop their water usage by 20% due to the drought. In July, urban water usage in the state was down by 7.5%. White this isn't the requested 20%, it still represents 17 billion gallons of water conserved. That is the equivalent of 25,755 Olympic-sized swimming pools or enough water for 1.7 billion people each to take a 5-minute shower.

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will hold an open house on Thursday, September 18, 2014, to explain and answer questions about its draft analysis of a proposal from Heavenly Mountain Resort. The resort has a 40 year lease to operate on national forest lands and now wants to expand year-round, non-skiing activities at the Lake Tahoe resort.

Crews have been working on an underground stormwater system in the Bijou area of South Lake Tahoe. The work is causing both Fairway Drive and Bal Bijou Road to have detours during the week but open and no controls on weekends.

Work is wrapping up with the installation of a box culvert for Bijou Creek and work is now focused on new curbing and inlets. The Bal Bijou storm drain system will be connected at US 50 next week, with curb installation to follow.

As we all know, the economy and our environment are fundamentally intertwined. If we ever doubted the connection, those doubts should have been erased through the impacts of the Great Recession on our local economy. We need revenue from tourism to sustain our economy, which in turn helps to fund environmental projects that protect the natural beauty, which draws millions of visitors every year. We cannot have a thriving economy without protecting the environment and we cannot have a beautiful natural environment without money to protect and properly sustain it.
