Douglas County roadwork set to begin on Jacks Valley Road

Jacks Valley Road along the base of the Sierra will be reconstructed starting Monday, June 12.

Q&D Construction, Inc won the contract and began pre-work last week with lowering utilities and mobilizing all the needed equipment.

The project will involve roadway and driveway work from Genoa Lane north to Alpine View Court. On Monday, grinding and pulverizing of the existing surface will start in the Town of Genoa and proceed north. The entire roadway will be repaved during the final construction stages.

The project is expected to be finished at the end of August.

Harrah's and Harveys name new Vice President for their Lake Tahoe resorts

Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe have announced a new addition to their staff. Christopher Joy has been named Vice President of Hotel and Food & Beverage for the resorts.

Joy spent many years living in the Reno area, having attended Reed High School and the University of Nevada, Reno. He started his gaming and hospitality career at the Silver Legacy in 1995 before moving to Las Vegas where he helped open the Aladdin as the Assistant Director of Front Office Operations, a job he held for five years.

Crash knocks out power to 2067 customers in South Lake Tahoe

A driver at the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe ran into the guy-wire for a power pole, cutting power to over 2,000 Liberty Utilities customers Tuesday afternoon.

The driver was not injured.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police Departments responded to the one vehicle crash after getting the call at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday June 6.

Power was knocked out in South Lake Tahoe at 12:46 p.m. but was restored by 2:45 p.m. A new power pole was placed on Pioneer Trail by Liberty Utilities crews.

"Don't take our lanes away" common theme at crowded NDOT meeting

A preliminary step in what will be a multi-year Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) process took place at Zephyr Cove Elementary School Wednesday evening. About double the expected maximum of 120 people crowded the school's multi-purpose room to view and listen to the agency's plans for the stretch of Highway 50 from Stateline to Spooner Summit in Lake Tahoe which is officially called the US50 Lake Tahoe Corridor Safety Improvement.

Two plead guilty to stealing recreation fees

Two suspects have pled guilty to stealing from fee tubes on the Eldorado National Forest and other sites in El Dorado County.

Brian Lisanti and Deseree Tougas entered the pleas in El Dorado Superior Court after a multi-agency investigation uncovered the crimes.

Youth in Juvenile Treatment Center earn CPR/AED cards

Eleven youth detained at the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe recently received two certifications: American Heart Association Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

This was the first time the course was offered to the youth housed at the facility, and not only did they get these important certifications but they also earned school credits.

Click it or Ticket campaign on Nevada roadways

Through the end of May, the Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement agencies have launched Click it or Ticket, an campaign to educate motorists on seatbelt usage. During this time, officers will be joining forces and watching for drivers and occupants in vehicles who are not wearing their seatbelts and/or children who are not properly secured in car or booster seat(s). Law enforcement will be stopping drivers for traffic offenses and issuing citations for seatbelt violations if unbuckled.

South Lake Tahoe man who led NHP on chase tries to escape jail

A 24-year-old Tahoe man jailed Wednesday after leading Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on a vehicle pursuit from Highway 50 Spooner to downtown Carson City, faces charges of attempting to escape and destruction of jail property, a sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned to the jail on Thursday responded to the housing pod for an inmate, Jesus Salvador Herrera-Casas, attempting to climb through the ceiling. Deputies responded and saw the man climbing up into the ceiling through the ceiling tiles.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction at Bridal Veil Falls due to slope damage.

State Route 89 (Placer County/El Dorado County): Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from the Tahoe City “Wye” to Alpine Meadows Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from Valley View Drive to General Creek State Park from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for dead tree removal.

New Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High already big success

The South Lake Tahoe community came together early in 2016 to raise money for a new Strength and Conditioning room at South Tahoe High, and the investment is already paying huge dividends.

"This room is changing the culture of our school," said STHS Football Coach Louis Franklin. "Having a room like this allows each kid to reach their genetic potential."

Student athletes are getting stronger, injuries are down and they are able to maximize their potential on the court, the field, the pool, or whatever the venue is for their sport. Cheerleaders and dancers also utilize the facility.

South Lake Tahoe woman sentenced to 72 months in prison for fraud and theft

Karen Rae Chapon, 47, of South Lake Tahoe was sentenced Tuesday for the crimes of insurance fraud, mortgage fraud and theft according to Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt.

Chapon is the owner of Tahoe Weddings and Events in Zephyr Cove, Nevada.

Escaped Carson City inmate found after crashing stolen water truck

An inmate who walked away from work detail at the Stewart Conservation Camp in Carson City on Tuesday has been arrested after crashing a City water truck that he allegedly stole.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was contacted on Wednesday, March 29 about the attempted theft of a vehicle in northern Douglas County. The reporting party was working on the roof of the Sprint Store on Hwy 395 when he saw the attempt. The suspect was chased away by witnesses, running north towards Fuji Park in Carson City.

Man who brought kidnapped woman to South Lake Tahoe spending 40 years in prison

Matthew D. Muller, a 40-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale who often spent time at his family cabin in the South Lake Tahoe area, was sentenced today to 40 years in prison for the kidnapping Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23, 2015.

If you have three-to-five hours a week to help a child, then Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) needs you. Help guide a child through a complex system of social workers, foster parents, and lawyers, while building a consistent, caring, mentoring relationship.

CASAs child advocates are tasked with getting to know a particular child and their specific needs and then communicating those needs, and the child’s voice, to the court. This information is highly critical in the decision-making process of juvenile court proceedings.

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Capt. Mark Wygant sentenced to 10 years in prison

Former South Lake Tahoe Fire Captain Mark McLeod Wygant was sentenced in U.S. District Court today to 10 years in prison for transportation of child pornography

Wygant, 46, plead guilty in December.

Following an FBI and SLT Police Department investigation, Wygant was a
arrested on Jan. 29 2015 and has been in custody ever since. He had been immediately placed on administration leave but resigned just days after his arrest.

Suspect in murder of Mendocino commerical pot grower arrested in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A fugitive pot plant trimmer suspected in the robbery and brutal killing of an operator of a commercial marijuana farm in Mendocino County was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Friday afternoon.

First Grand Jury since 2008 to be seated in Douglas County

The Ninth Judicial District Court was given $100,000 to fund a Grand Jury by the Douglas County commissioners during their meeting Thursday in Lake Tahoe.

Funds will be used to cover the jury's costs for the remainder of this fiscal year and next year, and includes their fees, supplies, travel expenses, security costs and attorney fees among other expenses needed to function.

LTCC passes resolution supporting diversity, undocumented students

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution at its Tuesday night meeting in support of undocumented students and the benefits of diversity to LTCC’s campus and beyond. This resolution follows the release of a Statement on Diversity from LTCC’s new Superintendent/President, Jeff DeFranco, published in the wake of White House changes to immigration policy.

El Dorado County and Arizona residents indicted for embezzling more than $200K

Placerville resident Jeffrey Scott Davis, 59 has been charged on six counts of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and mail fraud along with Glen Michael Martinka, 67, of Phoenix, Arizona.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment after Davis and Martinka allegedly conspired to embezzle approximately $218,000 from an organic food company by submitting false invoices between December 2008 and April 2012.

Major project in store for Kings Beach, public comment sought

Plans for an upgrade to the recreational facilities at Kings Beach State Recreation Area were unveiled during a public meeting last week. The project includes upgrades to the playground, restrooms, picnic areas, boat ramp and parking area, a relocation of the pier and the addition of an event area and stage, all over the next 20 years.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) held the meeting to get public feedback, and for those unable to attend the comment/feedback period is available online until February 15, 2017.

LTCC issues statement about diversity, immigration and Dream Act

Lake Tahoe Community College stands with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and its Board of Governors in strongly supporting the values and benefits of diversity and inclusion; not just on college campuses, but in towns and cities large and small across the country. The current White House administration’s recent executive orders regarding immigration, the building of a border wall, and its rhetoric regarding Dream Act students has caused widespread concern among California’s community college students.

Carson City, law enforcement agencies investigate new information in threats against local judge

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and several law enforcement agencies are investigating new information related to threats made against a Carson City judge, Sheriff Ken Furlong said Thursday.

On Wednesday, Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives and Department of Public Safety investigators received information that an inmate at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Detention Center was being held on a 2011 felony contempt of court warrant out of Carson City.

South Lake Tahoe's Measure T deemed unconstitutional

Friday was the end of voter approved Measure T in South Lake Tahoe.

During a January 27 court hearing in Placerville, EL Dorado County Superior Court Judge Jim Wagoner said that Measure T was fundamentally flawed, unconstitutional and unenforceable.

Detectives from Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked a joint investigation Wednesday involving multiple residential burglaries between the two counties. Three men were arrested as a result of the investigation, a law enforcement captain said.

The investigation, publicly announced earlier Wednesday, led detectives to Dayton where two suspects were located in possession of a large amount of stolen property from several burglaries, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brian Humphrey.

El Dorado County offices in South Lake Tahoe closed Monday; Court rescheduled

El Dorado County has closed their South Lake Tahoe operations on Monday due to snow.

Court is closed but plans to resume Tuesday.

Criminal cases in Department 3 will be scheduled tomorrow at the same time as originally set on Monday. Cases set in Department 4 will be set at another date and time by the clerk. Court users can contact the court's website at www.eldoradocourt.org for further details.
