Visitor drowns at Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/03/2018 - 10:28amOn July 1, 2018, deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) were dispatched to a report of a drowning at Fallen Leaf Lake. It was occuring at the same time as a Search and Rescue operation was being formed to help an ill person at Eagle Falls and helicopters were on the way to that scene at the time of the call of the drowning. Some diverted to the lake.
The victim was identified as Sudhamo Ahuja, a 70-year-old male from San Jose, Calif. and his next of kin has been notified.

Roadwork season returns in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/28/2018 - 9:20amThe three-year long, $56.9 million Caltrans project on a two-mile stretch of Highway 50 from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge is set to resume next week in South Lake Tahoe.
Scope of work in 2018 is from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue as well as repaving the “Y” intersection. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30 at 6:00 a.m. from Winnemucca Avenue working east. The work schedule for May will be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Roadwork to resume on retaining wall project at Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/19/2018 - 6:36pmRepair work to build a new retaining wall along a section of State Highway 89 in Emerald Bay is set to resume next week.
The retaining wall is being built near the Eagle Point Campground and work should be completed by the end of May. The northbound lane of the highway is closed and reversing one-way traffic is being controlled by automated signals.
A new concrete barrier near Eagle Falls was completed as part of the $4.4 million project last fall.
USFS gives opening dates for Lake Tahoe recreation areas
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/09/2018 - 10:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin the process of opening recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Baldwin and Nevada beaches open April 28. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens Friday, May 25. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens Tuesday, May 15, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 26.

Lake Tahoe recreational areas and forest roads begin their seasonal closures

Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads. Keep in mind that Tahoe Valley and Zephyr Cove Resort campgrounds remain open year-round along with Camp Richardson and Zephyr Cove resorts and beaches.

Expect delays with start of new road project at Emerald Bay
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/07/2017 - 11:20pmWork has begun on a stretch of State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay to replace a retaining wall and the extend an existing barrier slab and rail.
The contractor, Stewart Engineering, Inc. has established a staging area at the Eagle Falls parking area on the southbound side of the road. Visitors to the area should note that most, if not all, of the parking spots will be blocked by equipment.
Caltrans said work will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be reversing one-way traffic control so motorists should expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
Vail Resorts to add workforce housing in Colorado

Colorado Mountain Express got a conditional use permit for their $440,000 project is the latest in Vail Resorts’ $30 million commitment to creating workforce housing opportunities in the communities in which the Company operates, including the Wintergreen development in Keystone and the recently announced plans to rezone a parcel of land in East Vail for workforce housing and open space, pending approvals.

South Lake Tahoe youth invited to fly the skies during Young Eagles Rally

Kids will be able to experience South Lake Tahoe from the air during the 25th annual Young Eagles Rally at the Lake Tahoe Airport on September 23, 2017 starting at 8:00 a.m.
The Truckee Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will be hosting the event which provides free airplane rides to youth ages 8 to 17 years old.
Volunteer pilots introduce kids to aviation by giving them the free airplane rides, over 40,000 nationwide. Since EAA started in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe, 3400 youth have been able to get into the air.

El Dorado County safety personnel kept busy on South Shore
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/10/2017 - 11:07pmWednesday and Thursday were very busy for local safety personnel and volunteers in El Dorado County as they responded to four search and rescue calls and another call concerning suspicious gunshots.
At noon Wednesday, August 9, Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers were initially told a male hiker on the Tahoe Rim Trail near Freel Peak was suffering from an allergic reaction to peanuts. The victim was able to walk out to awaiting rescuers near Willow Creek Road below Horse Thief Canyon.

Once a year the public has the opportunity to explore the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility. On Sunday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they will open their doors to where the wild birds and animals are rehabilitated.
For 40 years the non-profit has been serving wildlife in the Sierra and normally the only people allowed past the front door are the volunteers.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/16/2017 - 5:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 28th annual American Century Championship is in the books, and former major league pitcher Mark Mulder won for the third straight year, the first three-peat at the celebrity golf classic at Edgewood Tahoe.
Mulder and his wife Lindsey once again brought their three kids to Lake Tahoe, all who ran out to the 18th green after Mark finished the day with a three-day total of 73 with the modified Stableford scoring.

Big rig gets stuck trying to get around Emerald Bay; Road reopens
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/11/2017 - 6:50pmA big rig jackknifed on State Highway 89 near Emerald Bay at Cascade Lake Road Tuesday afternoon, closing the road as crews worked to get it off the road.
According to Caltrans, the big rig became stuck at 4:41 p.m. when it was unable to make it through a hairpin turn. All traffic was stopped in both directions until 6:22 p.m. when the rig was moved to a pull out by Eagle Point.
Traffic is now moving in both directions.
Two large fires continue to burn in Northern Nevada
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/04/2017 - 2:30pmTwo large wildfires that started Monday east of Reno continue to burn.
The Truckee Fire near Wadsworth is now between 18,000 and 20,000 acres and is 15 percent contained. Over 200 firefighters and multiple agencies are working to put out the fire. This fire is now covering portions of Washoe and Churchill counties.
People are asked to stay out of the area and keep traffic clear along Interstate 80.
Fire closes I-80 in Sparks
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/03/2017 - 7:33pmInterstate 80 is closed in both directions from Patrick to Wadsworth due to wild fires and poor visibility according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Westbound traffic is being diverted at Derby Dam and eastbound traffic is being diverted at Mustang.
The Earthstone Fire started at 1:30 p.m. Monday and it is now at 3,000 acres according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks is closed while crews work on the brush fire near Belmar/Earthstone in Sparks.
Snow and water still over many Desolation Wilderness trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/26/2017 - 8:57amThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit wilderness ranger scouting expeditions last week have brought back some updated trail conditions for those planning to venture into Desolation Wilderness.
Many hikers are turning around because of difficulty they have in finding the trail because of the large amount of snow at upper elevations, limited dry ground, frozen lakes, and high stream crossings.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care membership drive and open house
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/29/2017 - 4:19pmIt isn't cheap to care for hundreds of wild birds and animals each year so Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is holding their annual membership drive. Funds raised go to medicine, housing, equipment and food for the injured and orphaned wildlife.
Memberships start at $35 and go up to $10,000, or more. Memberships account for 20 percent of the agency's budget. Click here for membership information.
Some USFS campgrounds in Lake Tahoe opening May 12
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/03/2017 - 3:10pmSnow is preventing some Lake Tahoe West Shore campgrounds from opening, but others are ready to go beginning May 12, 2017.
The West Shore campgrounds still have a large amount of snow at lake level which is causing the delay in their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2.
Fallen Leaf Campground will open May 12, but some sites will be closed due to wet conditions.

State Route 89 around Emerald Bay is currently closed after a tree fell onto the road way about one-half mile south of Eagle Falls overlooking Vikingsholm.
Caltrans and the CHP have closed the road to clear the tree which fell at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday, April 24.
