Free aging and caregiver educational series starts in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is pleased to present a free Aging & Caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe. The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.

The educational series will be held at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, located at 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe, on Mondays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following dates:

Spring aging and caregiver series in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Family Caregiver program is offering a six-week series of classes designed to provide instruction and support to caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.

It started on April 15 but participants can still join and attend any or all of the remaining sessions. This series is offered twice a year.

Douglas County senior scammed out of $34,000 over 20-month period

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) recently made connections with a senior citizen through their new Caring Neighbors Program. They found the senior had been scammed out of over $34,000 over the past 20 months.

In the program, a deputy and a volunteer visit seniors to obtain needed information such as consent, next of kin and medication information. The information is beneficial in case of a future emergency involving the senior citizen.

EDC Commission on Aging seeks new member

The Commission on Aging for El Dorado County is currently seeking a new member to fill one vacancy. The Commission strives to attain a balanced geographic representation and applicants are being sought from all areas of the County, including South Lake Tahoe. Preference will be given to individuals aged 60 years and older.

A whistleblower will earn about $430,000 after leading investigators to orthopedic clinics in Reno, Chico and Redlands for their allegedly using discounted and reimported osteoarthritis medications, but billing the government for full value.

The three clinics will pay a combined $2.39 million to resolve federal and state False Claims Act allegations that they knowingly billed federal and state health care programs for the unauthorized viscosupplements.

El Dorado County man jailed for alleged elder abuse

A Shingle Springs man was arrested Friday on suspicion of elder abuse after deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a verbal dispute.

Upon arrival at the home located on South Shingle Road, deputies found 47-year-old Charles Bigby on the room of the home at 3:15 a.m. doing construction work. The man told deputies there were no issues at the house, and no dispute.

County Commission on Aging looks to fill one vacancy

The El Dorado County Commission on Aging is actively recruiting to fill one vacancy. The Commission plays a very important advisory role to both the Area Agency on Aging and the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on matters concerning senior residents. The Commission focuses its efforts on issues such as:

3:56 pm update - The suspect, James Michael Valero, was found walking in the area of Fourth and South Streets and arrested. Officers responded to a citizen's tip and they found Valero.
