Tahoe's original ski resort, Granlibakken, near Tahoe City, is lodging central in 2012 with various ski and stay packages for seven area resorts.

“How much more warm weather and sunshine can we take,” laughed Kay Williams, deadpanning over last season’s epic seven-month winter and 700+ inches of snow. “Sure, various ski resorts like to be the first to open or last to close, but we want folks to know that we’re ready with early-season offerings.”

Claudia Vecchio has four weeks to cram for a big test. The newly appointed director of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs — the revamped Nevada Tourism Commission — will deliver opening remarks for the two-day Governor’s Conference on Tourism beginning Nov. 29. With a shrinking budget that not only is dwarfed by other state departments but by state tourism boards across the West, Vecchio has her eyes on the low-cost 21st century version of over-the-fence chitchat with friends and neighbors — social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

Trick or Treat with Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) at KRLT, 93.9, “The Lake” annual “Treat Street,” October 31. Every Halloween KRLT takes over a local motel, fills rooms with local businesses and non-profits, to hand out candy to the kids in a safe controlled environment. Thousands of children attend decked out as superheroes, princesses, magicians, monsters at Pine Cone Acre Motel at 735 Emerald Bay Road for 5 - 8 p.m.

Tahoe's Link to the Occupation Movement
Because of demand, our 2nd general assembly will be held in South Lake Tahoe.

Occupy Tahoe is an information dissemination device linking the people of the United Tribes of Tahoe to the #Occupy Movement. Direct links will be established to our closest sister group, #Occupy Reno, as well as our two most strategic target cities and their organizations (#Occupy Sacramento and #Occupy San Fransisco).

Update 7:14PM: Marie Hanson's family has confirmed through Facebook that the remains found Sunday at the site in Washington are Marie's. Services will be held this Saturday, October 15th at Sierra Community Church, Sierra Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe at noon. More info to follow.

UPDATE 3:52PM: Searchers have found skeletal remains and jewelry in an area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest where a South Lake Tahoe woman, Marie Hanson, was last seen during the Rainbow Family gathering. The Skamania County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Monday that searchers would continue to look for other evidence to link the remains and jewelry to Hanson, 54, reported missing by family since July 9. UPDATE: 9:50AM: We received word this morning that U.S. Army Spc. Garrett Fant, 4th Calvary, died on Sept. 26 in Afghanistan. He was 21-years old and listed as attending South Tahoe High School. The U.S. Army has not sent an official notice of his death but it has been confirmed through the news organization KSAL out of Fort Riley, Kansas. Fant's mother is Julia Towle Farell of South Lake Tahoe.

The U.S. Army announcement to the press came this morning but details have remained vague. News also reached Fant's Facebook page. Word surfaced from family friend and Gold Star Mother Patty Smith, who's son Sgt. Tim Smith, of South Lake Tahoe, died April 7. 2008 in Iraq. According to KSAL, Garrett Fant died due to injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan. He was on patrol in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar Province on Monday of this week when the IED detonated.

Fant, who was listed on KSAL News Radio as being from American Canyon, Calif., was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Fant joined the Army in March 2009 as an indirect fire infantryman. This was his first deployment. Fant's awards include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, NATO Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Nevada tourism leaders trying to figure out the best way to brand the Silver State to attract visitors may have a bigger challenge on their hands than they thought. Six focus groups in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, demonstrated little knowledge of the Silver State and its tourism attractions including Lake Tahoe, reports the Las Vegas Sun.
