Born in Detroit, Michigan on May 11, 1950, he was the son of Darcy Raymond Rousse and Yvonne Charlotte Labadie Rousse. He graduated from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He worked in transportation logistics and finance throughout his career.
South Lake Tahoe florist changes hands

Owners Jeri and Noboru Oishi owned the popular flower shop on Emerald Bay Road for 16 years and handed over the keys to Estes on February 1, 2018.
"I love anything flowers," said Estes who had operated an online and corner market, Karen's Flower Stand.
Carole "Honey" McCall 4/7/30 ~ 2/6/18

Thran's Flowers and Lake Valley Fire give 10 families a Christmas tree
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/21/2017 - 7:09pmTen local families will have a merrier Christmas after Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD), with the help of Katie Long of Thran's Flowers, made sure they had a decorated tree set up in their homes.
Captain Chuck Malone and Firefighter/Paramedic Dusty LaChapelle delivered the trees and, according to LVFPD, were delighted to help deliver and were overjoyed to see the smiles on the faces of the families that received the trees.
Thran's Flowers donated the trees, stands, lights and ornaments.
Tribute for long time Washoe County Search and Rescue volunteer
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/16/2017 - 11:38pmFor nearly 30 years, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office could rely on volunteer Richard Swartzendruber to deliver equipment necessary to support our Search and Rescue teams. From floods and fires to avalanches, water rescues, injured hikers, and stranded motorists, Richard would overcome conditions that were often extreme to haul boats, command centers or other equipment needed to help the mission succeed.
Richard, described by his family as an “adored husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather,” passed away on December 11, 2017.
George McCall 1929 ~ 2017

Whether he “had to catch a plane” in order to speed up dinner or exaggerated his age by 10 years, he was always one for a smile and a laugh. All of us would describe him as the best husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa we could ask for. Everytime you asked how he was doing, he simply responded with “fantastic.” Which was a perfect reflection of his positive and uplifting personality.
Magical display of themed Christmas trees at South Lake Tahoe holiday event
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/30/2017 - 11:23pmThe grand hall at MontBleu Casino Resort has been turned into a holiday paradise, a winter wonderland with the main attraction being the specialty Christmas trees.
On Thursday, local celebrities and media strolled by each of the designer trees, selecting those that won top honors of Most Elegant, Best Theme, Most Creative and Best of Show.
The excellent work on each made it almost impossible to come up with a winner, but four were chosen after much deliberation. Each tree will be paired with a special prize package during a live auction at Saturday's Gala.

South Shore youth treated to 10,000 eggs and prizes at Lake Valley Fire hunt
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/17/2017 - 2:50pmChildren from the Meyers and South Lake Tahoe communities took part in the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's (LVFPD) second annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Park.
10,000 plastic eggs were hidden in the park, each filled with candy, Lake Valley tattoos and some special golden eggs with prizes.
Jamie Sessions, and her husband LVFPD Fleet Manager Andrew Session, took two of their chickens to the event for the kids and their families to enjoy.
Thinning ice around Lake Tahoe becoming a safety concern for humans and pets
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/20/2017 - 4:26pmWarming temperatures and the arrival of spring bring not only flowers and the appearance of grass to the Lake Tahoe Basin, but they also bring dangerous thin ice.
In an incident Friday, a local woman was out walking two dogs when they ran onto the ice which broke, and both dogs fell into the cold water at Cove East near the Tahoe Keys. With assistance by a nearby paddle boarder the dogs were rescued, but this brings to light how serious the thinning ice can be.
Daffodil Hill opens for the season March 17; Coincides with Dandelion Days in Jackson
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/11/2017 - 4:23pmThe annual announcement of spring's arrival in the Sierra Foothills is the blooming of over 300,000 daffodils covering the hills of Volcano, Calif.
The yellow and white covered flower farm, Daffodil Hill, is slated to open on Friday, March 17 at 10:00 a.m. according to an announcement on their Facebook page. Snow has not only affected the upper elevations around Lake Tahoe, but also at the farm which lies at the 3,000 foot level. The daffodils were covered with snow during the Feb. 26 storm and owners had to hold off the opening date announcement.

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods 1927-2017
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/15/2017 - 7:42pmRuth Marie Hanson Woods, 89, passed away January 16, 2017 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. Ruth was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1927 in Santa Rosa, California. Her mother used to say, “What an appropriate day for Ruth to be born, on Labor Day.”
She was an only child, the loving and devoted daughter of Percy Brunell and Helen Patricia LeCornec Hanson. She was raised in Santa Rosa and attended area schools and graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1945. She married Norman C. Woods on April 13, 1947, at St. Rose Catholic Church, in Santa Rosa.

Maria Rose Barrows-Crist was born January 18, 1952 and died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 22, 2017. She died peacefully in her sleep.
Recently retired, she was busy spending time and traveling with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Pat was, as they say, a "force of nature". She was a dear family member to dozens and a dear friend to literally hundreds and she was never without a smile on her face.

Winning designer and school trees announced for annual Barton Festival of Trees & Lights

Judging of the decorated trees also took place. A team of local media, chamber members and educators viewed the trees and judged them on criteria including elegance, theme and creativity.
The Best of Show and Best Interpretation of Theme awards went to "Woodland Queen."
Firefighters killed in 1926 fire to be remembered in ceremony
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/27/2016 - 2:07pmIt was 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28 in the year 1926. Fire had broken out at the Jack Smith Ranch at the base of Clear Creek Canyon above Carson City, Nev.
Flames were high, and the fire traveled up the canyon rapidly, getting ever so close to the source of timber for all of the state's mines at Glenbrook. The fire also burned several ranches. Strong winds fanned those flames, and caused the fire to reverse itself and come down Kings Canyon. Again, it reversed itself and raced up Kings Canyon one more.

Christine Cosbey Smith March 10, 1949 - July 23, 2016

Christy was born March 10, 1949 in Altadena, California to Jack and Marjorie Cosbey. She spent her childhood in Southern California, graduating in 1967 from Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She studied Nursing at Long Beach State College and worked as a nurse in Cardiology and Family Practice.

The unexpected death caught everyone by surprise from family and friends to those she served in Alpine County through her position as the non-profit agency's coordinator.
"We were totally shocked," LVF Executive Director Jane Flavin said of Kline's passing.

Memorial fund set up for fallen BLM firefighter Jake O'Malley
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/17/2016 - 2:59pmWhittell High graduate Jake O'Malley was one of the two wildland firefighters killed in a single vehicle accident on July 10.
As part of O'Malley's duties while based in Winnemucca, Nevada was to patrol for fires, and it was while doing this when his vehicle crashed, killing both Jake and his roommate, Will Hawkins of Reno. A third occupant was hospitalized and has since been released.
John Thomas Setnor December 31, 1945 - July 12, 2016

He was born December 31st 1945 and was raised in Chicago, Illinois and spent 32 incredible years in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., with the love of his life, his Lynnie.
John's passion for fishing and extraordinary sense of humor were only surpassed by the love he showed for his family and friends. When he wasn't on his boat fishing, he loved spending time at home with his family sitting out by his pond enjoying the wildlife that he so loved.
Johanna "Jo Jo" Conroy July 24, 1950 - July 9, 2016

During her 43 years as a resident of South Lake Tahoe she touched many lives in a variety of capacities. She spent her summers as a banquet waitress at Edgewood Golf Course and her winters overseeing the operation of Rainbow Mountain Ski Shop. But it was her commitment to her community and friends where she truly shined.
Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari 1930- 2016

Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1930, Magliari, the son of an Italian immigrant, graduated in 1948 from George Washington High School, where he served as student body president. While attending Los Angeles City College Magliari enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called into active duty during the Korean War in 1951.
Fallen Leaf Campground to close next week for pesticide treatments
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/22/2016 - 9:13pmFallen Leaf Campground will be closed starting Monday, June 27 so county and state public health and vector control officials can start pesticide treatments to minimize the risk of plague.
The treatments are a public safety precaution after tests on 15 rodents resulted in one positive case of plague on June 20, 2016. There is minimal risk to the public at this time.
The campground will close at 7:00 p.m. Monday but all campers will need to check out by noon. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit expects it to reopen by Friday, July 1 in time for the holiday weekend.

With the generosity of funding from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and MacDuff’s Public House, Live Violence Free worked closely with South Tahoe Middle School to engage 7th and 8th grade girls and boys in discovering their true potential for greatness.

Coe Swobe, father of the Tahoe Bi-State Compact, dies at age of 87

Former Nevada State Sen. Coe Swobe died Thursday of liver failure at the age of 87.
“Lake Tahoe and the state of Nevada lost a stalwart champion in Coe Swobe,” said Joanne S. Marchetta, TRPA’s Executive Director. “Coe directed his passion for the lake into a lasting legacy that serves as an international symbol of cooperation in protecting an irreplaceable natural resource.”
Howard Bittner - March 7, 1950 to April 17, 2016
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/07/2016 - 8:58pmHoward Bittner, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident and chiropractor died April 17, 2016 after fighting a lengthy illness. He was 66.
Howard had been struggling with Pemphigus Vulgaris, an autoimmune disease, for the last 18 months.
Howard Henry Bittner was born on March 7, 1950, in Akron, Ohio. After growing up in Arizona and California, he attended Santa Barbara Community College before enlisting in the Navy. Howard graduated with honors from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa in 1980.
Timothy Roger Stoll June 16,1938- February 12, 2016

Dr. Stoll, an icon of the Tahoe area, practiced dentistry for over 50 years in both South Lake Tahoe and Minden.
Malcolm C. Pribyl 1946-2016

The long time local had recently moved to the Sacramento area due to illness.
Malcolm graduated from Tracy High School and U.C. Davis. Following completion of his military service, Malcolm moved to the South Shore where he worked at Sahara Tahoe.
He owned Malcolm C Pribyl Insurance Agents And Services which operated for years on Ski Run Blvd, after which he operated out of his home on the meadow near the college.
Michael P. Sheehan, March 12, 1970 - November 21, 2015

15-year-long partnership keeps Tahoe Yellow Cress off endangered species list
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/07/2015 - 8:25pmSuccessful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide today that Tahoe yellow cress (Rorippa subumbellata), a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The winner of the event, Riva Grill's Erick Martinez, is no stranger to the podium. Attendees voted his Blue Linen “Best Cocktail.” The drink combined Tahoe Blue Vodka with lavender, mint, cucumber, and St. Germain. Martinez, who also received the most tips and was voted “Most Congenial Bartender.” Erick received “Most Congenial Bartender” in 2014 and “Best Cocktail” in 2013.

Over fifty people gathered to enjoy a special four-course dinner at Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Friday, September 4 to begin the Labor Day weekend celebrations. Though the weather did not cooperate, Lake Tahoe Golf Course was more than accommodating with moving the event indoors to provide a warm and wind-free location for Blend Catering’s delicious dishes.
Local law enforcement in Carson City, Reno and Sacramento to honor fallen deputies

Thousands of people lined the streets of the state capitol to honor Howell who was killed after responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, August 15, 2015.
"Superheros are not always in comic books, they do exist in real life," said the fallen hero's father, Kevin Howell, at his son's funeral.

Paul Joseph Fry Jr.1931-2015

Paul was born in Dixon, Illinois in 1931, the son of Paul J. and Lauretta M. Fry, is preceded in death by his wife, Dee, of 53 years and is survived by his six children, twenty three grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Paul attended Medical School at the University of Illinois; he served his internship at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital and did Residency Training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Weekly farmers markets in South Lake Tahoe

The Tuesday market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is operated by El Dorado County Farmers' Markets and is held at the American Legion located at 2732 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Barton Health announces the passing of Dr. Paul J. Fry II

Dr. Fry made significant contributions to the health and wellness of our community, and his impact has improved the lives of many.
"Papa Fry," as he was known by many members of the community, was a beloved orthopedic physician in Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley for nearly 50 years. He opened Tahoe Fracture Clinic in 1964, and propelled the orthopedic program to a nationally recognized level.
