Several reports of fireball in sky over California, seen from Lake Tahoe

People from Fresno to Santa Rosa, California reported seeing a fireball across the sky Sunday evening around 5:24 p.m.
The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 19 reports from observers who said "the light got bigger before it burst, leaving a trail of smaller balls before disappearing," "it was a white streak followed by a few tiny fragments. Ended in the main fireball turning to a green color," and "it was flickering and sparkly, like a roman candle being shot across the sky."

Choices limited on what to do with California's 102M dead trees

There are now an estimated 102 million dead trees in California, creating unhealthy forests that are prone to major and catastrophic wildfires. Even though funds are being allocated to remove many of them, where will that timber go?
For now, there aren’t many options because of what has transpired from the government since 1968.
In that year the Secretaries of Agriculture and Interior issued orders restricting the volume of timber that could be harvested from Federal lands in the West. It was updated in 1969 to limit the total harvested to 350-million-board-feet.
SLT City Attorney Tom Watson leaving for job in Tracy

Tom Watson gave his resignation to the City Council on Wednesday, August 16, ending his four year stint as South Lake Tahoe's City Attorney.
Watson told South Tahoe Now he has been hired as the City Attorney in Tracy, California, a job that will get him closer to family.
“I am proud of what the City Attorney’s office has accomplished during my time here," said Watson. "I appreciate the Council and Staff’s dedication to this community and want Tahoe to thrive and prosper.”

Truckee "Secret Garden" open for tours after public gains access

Truckee has it's own "Secret Garden," a lush valley full of rare carnivorous plants and threatened bird species that has been preserved and kept from the public for more than 100 years.
The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Nature Conservancy partnered together and bought over 1,200 acres in the Lower Carpenter Valley for $10.3 million, 600 acres that is so sensitive that initially the only access with be through guided tours. 637 acres were purchased last year and treat hikers and mountain bikers to Crabtree Canyon. The final 80-acre parcel is under contract for purchase by the partners.

Man dies after fall from Harveys garage in Stateline

A 29-year-old man died Sunday morning after a fall from the upper levels of the parking structure at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline, Nev.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the casino at 3:00 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2017 when they were notified of a man with a traumatic injury found next to the parking garage.
When paramedics and deputies arrived they found the man, David Garcia, unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Special fraud officer appointed to oversee elections in El Dorado County

A special election officer has been appointed by the U.S. Attorney's Office to oversee any complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.
“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud," said Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert. "The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.”
Fresno County fire causing hazy skies in Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada

A wildfire burning west of the town of Coalinga in Fresno County is responsible for the widespread haze through the Lake Tahoe basin, the Sierra Nevada and Western Nevada.
The National Weather Service in Reno said the Mineral Fire is sending smoke north due to a southerly flow in the lower atmosphere.
So far, fire has burned through 5,000 acres of land in steep terrain. It started on Tuesday and the cause is under investigation.
There are 1,000 firefighters on the scene and several evacuations are in place.
USFS: 66 million dead trees in Sierra; 26 million since October

The number of dead trees in the Sierra Nevada are now at historic levels and have fueled the risk of catastrohpic wildfires according to the U.S. Forest Service.
They announced Wednesday that they have identified an additional 26 million dead trees in California since October 2015, bringing the total to at least 66 million dead trees in the state. The most recent additions are located in six counties across 760,000 acres in the Southern Nevada region.

Tom Orlich, one of California’s all-time winningest coaches which includes a 25-year run at South Tahoe High, has been hired by his former student, and new Stanford Men's Basketball coach, Jerod Haase.
According to the Fresno Bee, Orlich, who won three Central Section championships and more than 300 games in 14 seasons at Clovis High, is retiring from his district job to join Haase.
City hires new Development Services Director

The City of South Lake Tahoe has hired a new Development Services Director to replace Shawna Brekke-Read, who left the position in December after a year on the job.
City Manager Nancy Kerry today announced the selection of Kevin Fabino for the position. Fabino will be leaving his job as the head of the City of Reedley's Planning, Building and Engineering Divisions and will start the new job in South Lake Tahoe later this month.

Two months after a dog went missing from a Fresno family's home, he showed up in South Lake Tahoe. How he got to the lake is unknown, and the truth most likely will never be uncovered.
On the day after Christmas, 2015, Toby the dog escaped from his yard after someone lifted the fence to break into the family's home after they had left for a two day trip to Las Vegas.
New bear cub at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for the winter

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care welcomed a new house guest for the winter, one-year-old China.
China is a 40 pound male bear cub who just arrived from China Peak, near Huntington Lake, outside of Fresno. LTWC names the cubs that come to their center after the region they come from.
The first year cub's mother had to be euthanized after receiving irreparable damage after being hit by a car. China will be living at LTWC for the remainder of the winter with two other cubs that came from Sequoia.
Smoke from Rough Fire continues to head into Tahoe Basin

Winds the are continuing to move smoke from the 85,894 acre Rough Fire burning outside of Fresno, CA into the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend.
There are 1,967 personnel currently assigned to the fire and containment has now been increased to 31%. It is burning in the mountains between Fresno and Independence, CA.

The Rough Fire burning in the mountains east of Fresno, CA has consumed over 77,000 acres as of Wednesday morning, making it the largest active fire in the state of California.
Smoke from this large fire has made it way up to Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley, creating hazy skies along with a faint smell of smoke.
South Tahoe High volleyball player competes in Europe

It's not every day a teenager from South Lake Tahoe goes to Croatia to play volleyball for the summer, but that is exactly what Kaitlynn Watson did. Watson, a senior at South Tahoe High, participated in the 11th Annual European Global Challenge Volleyball Tournament as the starting libero for the U.S. Westside, California U17 team .

As Andrew Herrera is wrapping up his sophomore year at South Tahoe High, he is also busy making a mark in the wrestling world.
On Saturday, June 6, Herrera took first place in the 192-pound division at the California USA Wrestling tournament in Fresno.
The young South Lake Tahoe wrestler took third in the 170 pound division during February's state tournament.

Kids who collected 44,000 dimes visit burned firefighter

Maple Creek Elementary students learned the value of a dime Friday.
For collecting $4,402 — the equivalent of 44,020 dimes —for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, they got a wave and a smile from Pete Dern, the Fresno fire captain who is recovering from severe burns he got while battling a blaze.
“It made his day,” said Dern’s wife, Kelly Dern, who accepted a check from the students for the burn center.
“His face lit up,” said Dern’s daughter, McKenzie Dern.

Federal prosecutors have dropped charges against a Tuolumne County man accused of starting a massive 2013 wildfire that burned for more than two months and eventually charred more than 257,000 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park.

Investigators say a woman arrested for a fire that severely injured a Fresno fire captain has a history with fire. Julia Harper, 52, is jailed on charges of setting a fire causing great bodily injury. Fire Captain Pete Dern was nearly killed while trying to put out the fire Harper allegedly started.

On March 29, 2015, Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern fell through the roof of a burning home, resulting in severe burns over 70% of his body. In the days since the accident, firefighters and other concerned people from around the country have been sending both prayers and money to the family.
The outpouring of support is also evident on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. On Sunday, April 19, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and The Local 2441 are putting on a pancake breakfast to raise money for the mounting expenses for Dern and his family.

Lake Tahoe Community College has been chosen by the California Community Colleges’ Online Education Initiative (OEI) as one of eight colleges that will participate in the OEI’s full pilot launch, slated to take place from Fall 2014 through Spring 2016. Pot Bust in South Lake Tahoe nets nearly 300 pounds

A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested early Thursday by officers from the South Lake Tahoe-El Dorado County Narcotics Enforcement Team after they served a search warrant and found 300 pounds of marijuana plant trimmings.
Dwayne Allan Crenshaw,36, was arrested at his Fresno Avenue home and is accused of using the trimmings to create concentrated cannabis oils through several methods, including butane fuel extraction, a dangerous process that can cause an explosion and is a felony in California.

South Tahoe High Students Rose Campion, Dillon Mlynsky and Sammy Doyle were invited to participate with last weekend's NorCal Honor Band at Sonoma State University.
After three days of rehearsals with Eric Hammer, Director of Bands at the University of Pacific, the band gave a concert in the new Weil Hall at SSU.

South Lake Tahoe has appointed Thomas Watson to serve as its city attorney. He begins work July 8.
“Tom Watson was the obvious selection as our new City Attorney based on his extensive experience as City Attorney for the cities of Visalia, Porterville, Lindsay, Farmersville, Mendota and Woodlake,” said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis in a news release. “We are very pleased to have a highly qualified, experienced, and seasoned professional join our team and we welcome Tom to our city.”
Marijuana trafficker with El Dorado County grow operations sentenced to more than 17 years in prison

Uriel Ochoa-Espindola, 44, received a sentence of 17.5 years, according to U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner.

UC Davis scientists trace particulate air pollution to its source

Scientists at the University of California, Davis, have, for the first time, developed a system that can determine which types of air particles that pollute the atmosphere are the most prevalent and most toxic.
Previous research has shown that air pollution containing fine and ultrafine particles is associated with asthma, heart disease and premature death. This new study, released today by the California Air Resources Board and the Electric Power Research Institute, marks the first time that researchers have conducted source-oriented sampling of these particles in the atmosphere.
