Nevada Senator Harry Reid today co-sponsored, along with Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act that was introduced today by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act continues the federal commitment to Lake Tahoe by authorizing $415 million over 10 years to improve Lake Tahoe’s water clarity, reduce risks from catastrophic wildfires, combat invasive species and restore and protect the environment in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Low Turnout for Loop Road Project Meeting

Very few community members turned out for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project meeting held at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on Thursday night. Invitations were mailed and/or hand delivered to all residents in the proposed project area so they’d be able to better understand the process of relocation and financial reimbursement should the Revitalization Project be approved. Since many of those invited speak Spanish and Tagalog, interpreters were on hand to assist with translations, but no one in attendance needed their services.
Tahoe Fund launches 2013 signature environmental improvement projects

The Tahoe Fund is kicking off its 2013 fundraising season with the announcement of four 2013 Signature Projects that will help restore Lake Tahoe clarity and improve recreation in the Basin.
The projects include beach improvements at Sand Harbor State Park, Asian Clam control in Emerald Bay, a mile of bike trail along the West Shore, and a new bridge across Angora Creek in the Washoe Meadows State Park. Interested donors can learn more about these projects on the Tahoe Fund website here.
Input sought on stewardship messages for protecting Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Collaborative is launching a survey to find out what the public thinks are the most important things people can do to help protect Lake Tahoe. The survey results will be used to inform the creation of a new Environmental Stewardship Messaging campaign for the Tahoe region. The survey takes five minutes to complete and can be found online here.

South Lake Tahoe awarded $3 million stormwater grant
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 05/14/2013 - 2:48pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe has been awarded a competitive grant from the State Water Resources Control Board through the Proposition 84 Stormwater Grant Program (SWGP).
A total of $42 million was available for Round 1 Implementation projects throughout the State that are designed to reduce and prevent stormwater contamination of rivers, lakes, and streams. The City was one of the 37 applicants to make it through the first round of the application process, and one of only 24 applicants selected for funding.

South Lake Tahoe's Lead Safe Tahoe program has partnered with Lake Tahoe Community College to offer a Renovator, Repair, Painter (RRP) course in both English and Spanish, April 19-20.
The one-day class explains how to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's RRP rule. Subjects covered include: health effects, regulations, lead safe work practices, containment, cleaning and record keeping.
After passing an end-of-class exam, students receive RRP initial training certificates.
Lake Tahoe a finalist for $30k Bell Bike Helmet grant

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the U.S. Forest Service and the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association have been working together for a couple of years to improve mountain bike trails all while protecting the natural resources of our local forests. Lake Tahoe is a special place, loved and used by millions of visitors each year from around the world. The local forest service has been at the forefront of working collaboratively with user groups and the public to ensure that protecting the environment of this special place, still allows for uses that are compatible and fun.

United Way partners with grants to help Lake Tahoe area agencies

Several Lake Tahoe area nonprofit organizations and agencies will receive financial aid this year through partnerships announced Monday by the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.
The partnerships are aimed to address issues identified in each of the Lake Tahoe area communities, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.
Public comment begins Saturday on proposed Meeks Creek Meadow restoration

El Dorado County awards $2.6 million contract to Maine-based Tyler Technologies

Eleven companies proposed bids and the county spent 18 months researching those bids, according to a news release. The money for the contract will come from the county's reserve for capital projects. Supervisors also OK'd $3 million to hire additional staff to assist with implementation and conversion of the project.

UC Davis: Lake Tahoe clarity best in 10 years

Last year’s average annual clarity level was 75.3 feet, or a 6.4-foot improvement from 2011, according to data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

National Environmental Education Foundation awards grant to Tahoe Fund

The Tahoe Fund, an environmental non-profit raising funds for environmental improvement projects in the Tahoe Basin, today announced it has received an “Every Day Capacity Building Grant” from the National Environmental Education Foundation.
The grant program is made possible through the generous support of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. This grant will provide resources to help the Tahoe Fund expand its online fundraising capacity and donor management capabilities. The Tahoe Fund was one of 29 grantees selected from a competitive pool of 160 applicants. The grant is for $5,000.

Lake Tahoe agency OKs updates to watercraft inspection program

The approval keeps nearly all boater fees the same and improves efficiency of service at watercraft inspection stations around the Lake Tahoe Basin in an effort to keep the $1.4 million inspection program in the black, according to agency officials.

Forest Service approves Upper Echo Lakes Fuels Reduction project

The project would take up to six years to complete and includes the removal of trees up to 16 inches in diameter, which would be collected, put into piles and either burned or made available for firewood. There is a possibility of brief closures of areas adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail, according to the Forest Service.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund announced Thursday the launch of the Lake Tahoe License Plate ‘Plate Spotter’ program to reward owners of Lake Tahoe license plates with free lift tickets during the 2013 Winter season. Tahoe plates spotted by official “spotters” and the general public will be entered to win free lift tickets every week until March 20, 2013. The program is designed to raise awareness of Lake Tahoe license plates, and to reward and encourage renewals and new Tahoe license plate purchases.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $12,850 check today to the Tahoe Transportation District for the Rabe Meadow Bike Path, a key segment of the proposed new bike and pedestrian route around Lake Tahoe called the Lake Tahoe Bikeway. Barton Health supports Lake Tahoe area organizations in need

“Empowerment” is the premise of Barton Health's Community Advisory Committee (CAC). After careful evaluation of 19 grant applications, nine-non-profits recently received $24,000 in grants from the CAC. Through these grants, the CAC is able to “empower” area community programs with funding to help close the health gaps and address health issues within the community.

After attending the State of the South Shore Economy Public Forum held on October 23rd, 2012 I was inspired to draft a response to the questions about economic revitalization that were asked at the meeting. I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.
