Tahoe Youth & Family Services holds "Miles for Recovery" virtual event

UPDATE: Registration until September 15, 2020.

September is National Recovery Month for both substance abuse and mental health. In recognition of this, Tahoe Youth & Family Services is partnering with Carson Valley Medical Center and providing a Miles For Recovery virtual challenge fundraiser.

This fundraiser will replace the organization’s annual 5K event at the beginning of Carson Valley Days that was canceled because of the pandemic.

Fundraising, donations and grants are the only source of income for the 501c3 nonprofit.

Students learn bike safety and skills at South Lake Tahoe Middle School

Local bicycling advocates spent Friday at South Tahoe Middle School, teaching students about bike safety, bike skills and how to do repairs on bikes.

As part of the 12th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), the Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition and the Community Mobility Group put the students through a series of stations learning how to fit helmets correctly, how to do hand signals, a skills rodeo, the parts of a bike and how to fix a flat and do other repairs and an obstacle course.

Students benefit from Brief Intervention Program in South Lake Tahoe schools

Students at South Tahoe High and South Tahoe Middle schools now have an option to the normal suspension process thanks to the Brief Intervention Program (BIP) developed by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition.

In the past, students would be sent home for three days when suspended for having, or being under the influence, drugs or alcohol while at school. In many instances this method was looked at as a few days vacation with little, or no, opportunity to learn from their errors.

Made in Tahoe: Don the Baker dishes up shtick with his sweets

In this life, Don Ewing is a baker. In a previous life, he probably had his own TV show based on his life as a comedian who does shtick based on flour, yeast and water.
While South Shore is lucky to have Howie Nave as the emcee of all things standup comedy, Ewing, known around town as "Don the Baker," knows he can't compete on the same stage.
"I'm not really not funny," he says. "I'm not rich, either. I'm a baker's man who kneads dough."
