South Lake Tahoe's new truck quickly becoming valuable fire-fighting tool

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been a long wait. The December, 2020 arrival of a new ladder fire truck for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was a journey that began in 2013 when a Ferrara ladder truck has been ordered to the tune of almost $1,050,000. That truck replaced an aging 1982 truck and was paid for by California sales tax funds that are for public safety. As soon as that truck arrived in 2014 though, it was trouble.

Del Laine ~ March 20, 1930 - December 18, 2020

Del Laine has left her mark on South Lake Tahoe in ways that many local residents might not know. She was a mover and shaker, whose focus was on making the city a better place. Her most important role, though, was promoting the well-being of women.

This pioneer died Dec. 18, 2020, at home from natural causes, with family at her side. She was 90.

She was born Dolores Mae Wright on March 20, 1930, in Oakland, Calif., to Mabel Paulson and Leslie Wright.

Del Laine, South Lake Tahoe trailblazer, dies at the age of 90

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A true trailblazer in the forming of the City of South Lake Tahoe has died at the age of 90. Del Laine, passed away from natural causes with her family at her side.

She served on South Lake Tahoe's City Council from 1976-1980, and then again from 1984-1988 and became the City's first female Mayor in 1977. She would go on to serve one more term as Mayor during her time on council.

Eric Michael Berg ~ 3/13/1988 - 11/29/2020

Eric Michael Berg tragically and unexpectedly passed on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the age of 32. The severity and duration of his addiction to alcohol was almost entirely hidden from his friends and family. He passed just hours before family intended to bring him to a medical detoxification facility.

John Russell Rice, Jr. ~ 1957 - 2020

John Russell Rice Jr. died peacefully at Carson Tahoe Medical Center in Carson City, Nevada on February 23, 2020, from complications of a recently diagnosed medical condition, surrounded by family. He was 62.

John is preceded in death by his parents: father John Russell Rice Sr. of Fremont, Calif.; mother Elizabeth LaVerne Rice-Killion of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and his grandson Mason Allen Geist of Gardnerville, NV.

Lake Tahoe DAR hosts Wreaths Across America

Members of Lake Tahoe Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) joined groups from across the country on Saturday, December 14 for a Wreaths Across America ceremony. This was the first time it was held in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

South Lake Tahoe Veterans Day: Because of you......

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was one of the largest crowds ever gathered at the American Legion to celebrate and honor local veterans. Part of that crowd were two 99-year-old veterans and a 2000 STHS graduate who will soon be a commander in the US Navy, veterans of other wars, family, first responders and community members.

Daughters of the American Revolution membership surpasses one million

This month, membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has surpassed one million total members since its beginning. Member number one million is Amy Dickinson from Freetown, New York. Amy is the author of the popular advice column, “Ask Amy.” Her journalism career began as a freelancing position with the Chicago Tribune. Her personal life has involved many challenges, including her father’s abandonment of the family when she was a child.

Keith Klein ~ 1941 - 2019

Keith Karl Klein, age 78, died peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, surrounded by his wife and close friends, following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Marlin Joseph "Hersh" Herschman ~ 1943 - 2019

Hersh Herschman was never a certified tennis professional, but many of those who he instructed would say otherwise.

Born Marlin Joseph Herschman on Jan. 12, 1943, in St. Ignatius, Montana, he would always be best known as Hersh or The Hersh Man. He died Aug. 7, 2019, at The Chateau at Gardnerville in Nevada of inoperable brain cancer. His wife, Sheryl, and best friend for more than 40 years Greg Painter were with him. He was 76.

After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Montana in 1961, Hersh joined the U.S. Army for two years. He spent two summers at West Point.

Those who sacrificed their lives honored in South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow and rain turned to sunshine as over 100 people honored those who died for their country during the annual American Legion Post 795 Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Knowing people are "Tahoe Tough" the Legion decided to keep their plans on having the event outdoors, and their prayers were answered when the sun came through and shone on the attendees, speakers, and singers.

Celebration of Life set for Judy Brown

A Celebration of Life is planned on Friday, May 31, for long-time local resident Judy Brown. The casual event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Flight Deck Bar & Grill inside the Lake Tahoe Airport.

City of South Lake Tahoe settles with fire engine manufacturer, gets $1.775M

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since its arrival, the 2013 model Ferrara ladder truck the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) purchased has been been a "lemon," and now they have reached a settlement with the manufacturer, Ferrara Fire Apparatus of Holden, Louisiana.

In 2014, City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) took possession of a 2013 model Ferrara ladder truck at the tune of almost $1,050,000. It was purchased to replace the aging ladder truck SLTFR had from 1982 and was paid for with funds from California sales tax money devoted to public safety.

Judith Virginia Brown ~ July 22, 1946 – December 8, 2018

Judith Virginia Brown passed away at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., on Dec. 8, 2018.

She was 72.

South Lake Tahoe honors veterans at American Legion ceremony

Each of us is better today thanks to a veteran. These were the opening words of the annual Veterans Day observance at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday.

"Today we honor all veterans as we do in times of peace and in times of war," said Mayor Wendy David. "Sadly the Great War wasn't the war to end all wars.

"To our vets, thanks will never be enough," she added.

Memorial Day ceremony to honor Lake Valley Firefighter Larry Stewart

Lake Valley firefighter Larry Stewart was on his way to a fire at Camp Richardson on Friday July 3, 1964 when the water tender truck he was driving ran into a tree. He died two days later.

On Memorial Day, 2018, Stewart will be dedicated on the Public Safety Wall of Honor during a ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m.

In 2017, the first ceremony was held and the names of US Forest Service-Tahoe Basin Firefighter Mikey Hallenbeck and Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) irefighter Mitch Underhill were permanently etched on the Wall.

Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony

"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.

Memorial in South Lake Tahoe dedicated to local heroes

The new public safety memorial wall was dedicated during a public ceremony on Friday. Fire trucks and patrol cars lined the street as law enforcement, US Forest Service and fire personnel gathered at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Speakers included Undersheriff Randy Peshon, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston.

The public is invited to the dedication of a new public safety memorial wall at Happy Homestead Cemetery on Friday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Local law enforcement and fire departments will be participating, with South Lake Tahoe Mayor Austin Sass, El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel, fire and police chiefs speaking during the ceremony. A large contingent of agency equipment is expected along with honor guards and traditional bell ringing.

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods 1927-2017

Ruth Marie Hanson Woods, 89, passed away January 16, 2017 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. Ruth was born on Labor Day, September 5, 1927 in Santa Rosa, California. Her mother used to say, “What an appropriate day for Ruth to be born, on Labor Day.”

She was an only child, the loving and devoted daughter of Percy Brunell and Helen Patricia LeCornec Hanson. She was raised in Santa Rosa and attended area schools and graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1945. She married Norman C. Woods on April 13, 1947, at St. Rose Catholic Church, in Santa Rosa.

Rick Taylor 1948-2017

Long time South Lake Tahoe area resident and businesses owner Rick Taylor passed away on January 22, 2017 with his family by his side following a brief illness.

Taylor, 68, was a cherished husband and loving father.

Rick was born on May 24, 1948 in Long Beach, CA and was a resident of the South Shore since 1975. Taylor was the owner of South Y Fireplace since 1989.

Jose Jesus Bobadilla 1956-2016

South Lake Tahoe resident Jose Jesus Bobadilla passed away on December 24, 2016 at the age of 60.

He was born on February 13, 1956 in Mexico and moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1980 where he resided until his death.

Jose Jesus is survived by his wife, Mindy Magpusao Bobadilla, who took care of him for the past five years as he was bedridden. He also leaves behind two sons, Anthony M. Bobadilla and Paulo M. Bobadilla who also assisted with his care.

Vernice Velma Rianda 1928-2016

Vernice Rianda, former long-time Lake Tahoe Community College bookstore employee and mother of El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel, has passed away at the age of 88.

Kenneth Charles Traum 1971 - 2016

Kenneth Charles Traum passed away suddenly at his home in Martinez, Ca., on Nov. 5, 2016.

He was 45.

Kenny was born on July 17, 1971, at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, Ca. He moved to South Lake Tahoe, Ca., with his mother, Judy, and brother, Mike, when both boys were toddlers. He attended pre-school at Under the Magic Pine Tree, followed by Meyers and Al Tahoe elementary schools, South Tahoe Middle School, and graduated from South Tahoe High School in 1989.

Fire starts in truck bed at Happy Homestead Cemetery

South Lake Tahoe firefighters responded to the Happy Homestead Cemetery on Johnson Blvd. Wednesday evening to put out a fire that started in the bed of an older model Ford truck. Crews quickly extinguished the flames.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation according to SLT Fire Rescue and amount of damage has not been reported as of yet.

Veterans celebrated in South Lake Tahoe ceremony

The largest crowd ever to attend the annual Veterans Day Celebration in South Lake Tahoe converged at the American Legion Friday as veterans and service men and women from all wars and military operations were remembered.

"Each of us are here today because of a veteran, those who fought to preserve our freedom," said American Legion Post Chaplain Curt Emrie as he opened the ceremony. "Pray for those who paid the ultimate price and always keep veterans near and dear to our hearts."

November 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War 1 in 1918. Historically, veterans are remembered in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time the guns fell silent on 11/11/1918.

There will be a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe to remember those who have died in service to our nation. The American Legion Post 795 is hosting the ceremony and has invited the public to attend both the remembrance and for refreshments at their hall afterwards.

Close to 600 flags will be placed at Happy Homestead Cemetery by the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Friday morning, and they'll remain throughout the holiday weekend. The cemetery is the final resting place to more than 560 veterans.

Veterans honored at South Lake Tahoe memorial ceremony

"Keep us humble of heart, unselfish in purpose," were some of the words spoken by Chaplain Curt Emrie at the South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony held Monday at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

About 100 people gathered to honor those who not only gave the ultimate sacrifice in the country's wars, but for those who served in the Armed Forces.

550 flags had been placed on the grave sites of veterans, placed there by members of the South Lake Tahoe American Legion Post and the SLT Moose Lodge.

During Monday's ceremony there were speakers, music and shared memories.

Veteran and Public Safety Memorial to be built at Happy Homestead Cemetery

If all goes as planned, a new feature will be started at South Lake Tahoe's Happy Homestead Cemetery in the new few weeks that will honor veterans and public safety officers.

The new memorial walkway will display bricks that can be purchased in memory of those both alive and deceased as well as marble plaques that will honor those who have served.

A grassy area in the center of the cemetery, right behind the office, will be the area the monument will be built.

Details remain vague with arrest in nearly 32-year South Lake Tahoe murder of Richard Swanson

Authorities have arrested a Carmichael, Calif., man suspected in the 1980 South Lake Tahoe gas station robbery and murder of 16-year-old Richard Swanson.
After nearly 32 years, On March 28, Andrew Sanford, 50, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the alleged murder of Swanson. The robbery and homicide happened on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road. Details of the case have been kept tightly under wraps.
