LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - During these challenging times, everyone can use some good news which is why the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) has announced its 2019 Bicycle Achievement Awards. Each year, the LTBC honors those that have made significant advancements to promoting safer bicycling and walking opportunities for the Lake Tahoe-Truckee area.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On March 26, 2018, during a run down a chute at Kirkwood, Jen Dawn's life changed forever.

The 41-year-old South Lake Tahoe mother of two had completed one run down the sister chutes and was hiking over to the second when she slipped and fell 20 feet off of a cliff onto rocks and ice, landing on her right leg. The fall shattered that leg, lacerated her face and caused tooth loss.

Funding for reimagination and renovation of Spooner State Park now in place

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Construction is set to begin in May 2020 on the renovation and reimagination of facilities at Spooner Lake State Park. A collaboration between Nevada State Parks, Nevada State Lands and the Tahoe Fund has been successful in securing funding and donations to complete plans for the 35-year-old park.

New agreement in the works for 56-acre South Lake Tahoe downtown project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

Angel of Tahoe helps spread holiday joy in South Lake Tahoe for a third year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Tahoe Youth & Family Services (TYFS) helped spread cheer this season by hosting a special children’s holiday party on Saturday, December 14 at the Lake Tahoe Community College. This event was a collaboration made possible by the generosity and giving heart of the ‘Angel of Tahoe,’ Mrs. Lisa Maloff. For the third year in a row, Mrs. Maloff made a sizeable donation to Tahoe Youth & Family Services with the request for the agency to help make the holiday season special for local children.

Local man files temporary injunction; South Lake Tahoe cannabis permit process on hold

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is another delay in cannabis businesses being able to move forward in South Lake Tahoe.

Local business owner John Runnels filed a temporary injunction against the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council and the Development Services Director Kevin Fabino in Superior Court in Sacramento Friday afternoon. That action has put a temporary halt to all cannabis-related permits being processed in the city until a December 20 court date.

Barton ICU nurse wins national award for exceptional care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – On Wednesday, September 18, Angela Harvey, RN was honored by the DAISY Foundation™ and Barton Health with the international DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses.

Angela, a nurse at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is the first person to receive this award at Barton Health. The DAISY Award® recognizes the extraordinary, compassionate care that nurses provide patients and families every day. The award is one initiative of the DAISY Foundation™ to express gratitude to the nursing profession.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the blighted Henrikson Building to take a ceremonial swing of the hammer — to say goodbye to an eyesore of a building whose useful life came to an end years ago. They were also there to celebrate what will soon take shape as Tahoe City’s first new hotel in more than 60 years.

Jennifer (Jenny) Susanne Scott Fox came into this world at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, California on November 8, 1980, and passed away at the age of 38 August 9, 2019.

Meeting Duran Duran next week the goal of beloved South Lake Tahoe teacher

Many have followed her journey to meet Duran Duran and lead singer Simon Le Bon. In August of 2015, we carried her story to gain the notice of comedienne Ellen DeGeneres so she could go to her show and meet Le Bon and the band.

Basecamp Pizza raises $17,250 for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A year-long fundraising effort by the staff and management at Basecamp Pizza has netted $17,250 for the Lake Tahoe Education Foundation (LTEF).

On Monday, August 12, the popular restaurants in the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe presented members of LTEF with a check.

100-year-old former South Lake Tahoe man oldest graduate of PGA program

100-year-old Stephen Layton has become the oldest graduate of a national program that introduces golf to military veterans. Layton was a Gunner in the U.S. Navy and fought in the battle of Guadalcanal during World War II, where he was injured by a bomb explosion that earned him a Purple Heart. After the service, Layton spent much of his life living in South Lake Tahoe with a career as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Scam requesting gift cards circulating South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The scam is old, but if you want to help those in need it may pull at your heart strings....for a moment.

I got a text today from someone claiming to be Father Mauricio Hurtado of St. Theresa Catholic Church. While I am not a member of the church I am co-chair of their Bread & Broth 4 Kids program and it isn't that abnormal for him to contact me, though it is normally through email.

So at 8:25 a.m. Friday when the text says, "Hi Paula, I need a favor from you, text me back as soon as you get my message - Fr. Mauricio Hurtado," I hit reply right away.

Third cannabis permit applicant files appeal with City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A third company has filed an appeal with the City of South Lake Tahoe, questioning the scoring they received from the committee selected to rate the applications.

Cannabis business applicants question evaluation scores - File appeals with City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two businesses that were not selected to go further in the process of vying for one of three cannabis retail store licenses have filed appeals with the City of South Lake Tahoe. They are questioning the fairness of the selection process, and one is stating that all three applicants who had the top scores evaluation scores should be disqualified. A third applicant said he is in the process of filing an appeal.

5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon this weekend; Lane closure announced

Over 1,800 runners will be participating in this weekend's 5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon. The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe cannabis application scores announced - next step safety permits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After 21 applications for cannabis retail, cultivation and micro-business licenses in South Lake Tahoe were received, reviewed, evaluated and scored, the City has announced the chosen six.

The top applicants are invited to apply for a special public safety license and negotiate a formal development agreement with the City. By fall, three retail permits, two microbusiness permits, and one cultivation permit will be awarded.

3rd annual Tahoe Brewfest benefits Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club

Those who sacrificed their lives honored in South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow and rain turned to sunshine as over 100 people honored those who died for their country during the annual American Legion Post 795 Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Knowing people are "Tahoe Tough" the Legion decided to keep their plans on having the event outdoors, and their prayers were answered when the sun came through and shone on the attendees, speakers, and singers.

Lead changes as Amgen Tour of California heads into final stage

A determined ride by UAE Team Emirates’ 20-year-old Tadej Pogacar’s (SLO) today could make him the youngest ever Amgen Tour of California champion when the race concludes in Pasadena tomorrow. First-timers to this race, Pogacar and 21-year-old Sergio Higuita battled to the steep summit finish atop Southern California’s Mt. Baldy, with the EF Education First Pro Cycling Columbian rider slipping into second place for the stage after a wide turn to the finish gave the younger rider clearance to the line.

Susan Allison Mancini ~ 3/26/62 - 4/30/19

Allison, also affectionately known as Allidaughter, was born in Bishop, California to Mary Strobel and Robert Dietz when Robert was the manager of the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.

Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

Bread & Broth celebrates 30 years, volunteers and Father Grace just before his death

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a celebration of 30 years of serving food to the local community through St. Theresa Church's Bread & Broth program. It was a celebration of the volunteers that make their Monday Night meals, Second Serving meals and Bread & Broth 4 Kids so successful in feeding those in need, not only of food but for camaraderie and community.

Road Beat: Toyota Avalon, A Super Car for whom?

Toyota created the Avalon about 25 years ago as a more luxurious and bigger Camry. Eventually, Toyota used the Avalon chassis for its Lexus ES350 series. Nothing wrong there. Now in its fifth generation, the all-new Avalon really is all new. While the nameplate is old, it is looking to attract younger drivers. The median age of Avalon drivers has grown from about 60 in 2005 to about 66 currently. For this new generation Avalon, perhaps the question should be asked: “Why are 66-year old’s having all the fun?”

36th annual dance recitals for Lake Tahoe's Shining Stars

For 36 years dancers from the Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio have celebrated the joy and beauty of dance during their annual recitals and starting Sunday, April 28, that tradition continues on the stage of the South Shore Room at Harrah's Tahoe.

The studio's 'Lake Tahoe’s Shining Stars', ages 2 1/2 to "young at heart" adults will dance in the recitals that showcase their talent and hard work.

Two-year long NDOT US50 Spooner Summer project to begin this week

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will begin a two-year long storm drainage project to help preserve water quality and reduce erosion on US 50 between Carson City and Spooner Summit on Thursday, April 25.
