Vail Resorts participates in ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and donates $25,000

Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Tuesday in honor of Northstar Snow Services Manager, Matt Reeder, who has been battling the disease since 2011.

250 senior team members of the resort "jumped in" on the challenge and Vail Resorts gave $100 for each of them to ALS.

Vail operates Heavenly Valley, Kirkwood and Northstar in Lake Tahoe.

2014 Gene Upshaw Scholarship awarded to Whittell High student Melissa Petty

George Whittell High School student Melissa Petty of Stateline, NV. was announced as the recipient for the sixth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship. Petty’s essay about her hard work in the classroom, her sports, her faith and goodwill helped secure the scholarship valued at $5,000. Petty plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno and pursue a bachelor’s degree in science.

South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic brings ‘Freedom of the Forties’ to the Tahoe Keys Marina this year on July 25 and 26.

This year's theme is ‘Freedom of the Forties’ which honors U.S. military and pays homage to antique and classic boats of the forties. World War II veterans are provided free admission to the event, and U.S. military receive discounts on event admission.

Lake Tahoe Community College has selected Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Chief Ben Sharit as its Distinguished Alumni Award winner for 2014.

South Lake Tahoe's 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade Ready to Entertain

"I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival," the 2nd President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail. "It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other..."

Adams wrote of the country's celebration of America's independence on July 4.

Regarded by many as the best track and field team ever, members of the 1968 Olympic team returned to the site of their high altitude training center and U.S. Olympic Men's Track & Field Trials on Friday as the location was honored with a California State Historical Marker.

A crowd of a few hundred people gathered at Echo Summit for "Return to the Summit" which honored the unique location as well as the unique time and team. There were tumultuous times in 1968 prior to the Olympics with the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr and Bobby Kennedy as well as the Vietnam War.

Leadership Lake Tahoe Class of 2014 Graduates

The Leadership Lake Tahoe class of 2014 graduated from the ten-month program produced by TahoeChamber this week. On June 12, 2014, twenty-two participants, as well as family and friends, celebrated at Aston Lakeland Village with a commencement ceremony and reception to honor the hard work and dedication these individuals displayed throughout the year. Members of the Leadership Lake Tahoe Task Force, Leadership Alumni and TahoeChamber board members congratulated the class on its diligent efforts, as well as its success at the Leadership Lake Tahoe Summit “Elevate Your View” this past March.

Child Abuse Prevention Month: No Child Deserves to be Hurt or Neglected

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and in honor of raising awareness, it is time we discuss this silent tragedy present on a daily basis in our community. The simple truth is that no child deserves to be hurt.

Unfortunately, the reason I have a job is due to the overwhelming presence of child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence in society. I stand strongly behind my job and the importance of raising awareness of the impact that child abuse has on our community and providing people with the tools to stop the violence.

For the sixth consecutive year, South Tahoe High School students have won honors in the California Fourth District Congressional Art Competition.

STHS student Meghan Bryd won the competition this year with her photograph in honor of a holocaust survivor.

Volunteers turn an ordinary birthday party into a trip down memory lane with music from the past. Musicians share ukulele, piano, and organ music with our residents. They honor our vets. Some volunteers bring in their pets to lick faces and shower our residents with love. Other groups bring church to Skilled Nursing residents every Sunday.

Sgt. Smith, 25, of South Lake Tahoe, assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located at Fort Polk, La.; died April 7 2008 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

Iraq War Veteran Chad Pfeifer Selected to Golf in South Lake Tahoe Celebrity Golf Event

For the past 25 years, the South Lake Tahoe's signature sporting event has been the American Century Championship. This year's event will feature a hero among the slate of celebrities from the sports and entertainment fields. Retired United States Army Corporal Chad Pfeifer, an Iraqi War Veteran and amputee whose golf-centered rehabilitation has turned him into a top-tier tournament player, will play in the July tournament.

Dr. Seuss Hats Off Exhibition Comes to Lake Tahoe

Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. Barton Health Announces Doctor of the Year

Dr, Daniel T. Robertson was named Barton Health's Doctor of the Year. Known as "The Hand Guy," Dr. Robertson is an orthopedic surgeon for Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, specializing in treating injuries of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.

Each year a doctor on staff at Barton is voted on by peers and staff and awarded the honor on "Doctor's Day."

Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is looking for cyclists to join their Climate Ride California team to cycle through wine country May 17-20, 2014. Riders will help raise awareness of climate change, alternative modes of transportation and the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue.

Reno's David Wise Wins Gold in the Sochi: Skis out of Northstar in Lake Tahoe

David Wise of Reno, Nevada won gold today in the first ever Olympic Men's Freeskiing Halfpipe in Sochi. The Wooster High Grad topped competitors with a first run of 92 and hit the deck and didn't finish his second run.

The 23 year old Wise calls Northstar of Lake Tahoe his home resort. He won the gold medal in the X Games the last three years.

South Tahoe High Students Perform With NorCal Honor Band

South Tahoe High Students Rose Campion, Dillon Mlynsky and Sammy Doyle were invited to participate with last weekend's NorCal Honor Band at Sonoma State University.

After three days of rehearsals with Eric Hammer, Director of Bands at the University of Pacific, the band gave a concert in the new Weil Hall at SSU.

Selected among several local outstanding youth Josh Kornbeck will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the California Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. South Lake Tahoe Welcomes First Baby Born in 2014

Joshua Tapia-Hernandez arrived a day late, giving him the honors of being the first baby born in 2014 at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

His parents are Adriana and Abraham Tapia of South Lake Tahoe and came into the world at six pounds, fourteen ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

Joshua was born at 5:24pm on Thursday. When mother Adriana arrived at the hospital in the early afternoon, she was very calm. She said her calmness even amazed her physician, Dr. Spielvogel, who was surprised how quickly the baby was born.

Lake Spirit Awards Given by Tahoe Regional Planning Agency

Eight individuals who display strong personal commitment to protecting and restoring Lake Tahoe were recognized today by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during the third annual Lake Spirit Awards ceremony at the Agency’s Governing Board meeting in Stateline.

South Lake Tahoe in the Running For "America's Best Ski Destination"

Voters chose Lake Tahoe as "America's Best Lake" in 2012 and the local area is now up for another top honor as "America's Best Ski Destination."

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority is seeking votes from the local community through the month until the contest's end on December 30 at 8:50 pm PST. Online votes can be made daily on the voting site. North Lake Tahoe is also in the running along with Sun Valley, Idaho and other big resorts.

Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.
