History Sunday: The Pony Express Rides Again
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/21/2015 - 10:43amEven though it lasted just 19 months, the Pony Express played an important role in the western expansion of the United States. The Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications prior to the telegraph.
With the threat of the Civil War there was a need for faster communication with the growing number of people living in the West. Three men understood this need (William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors) and created the Pony Express.
Cycling celebrated in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/20/2015 - 10:53pmCycling in South Lake Tahoe was the focus of the second Annual Cycle Celebration on Saturday. Kids both young and old were at the Heavenly Village to participate in a Bike Parade, Bike Rodeo, Bike Tune-Up station and informational booths.
The celebration wrapped up the two-week long Tahoe Bike Challenge where hundreds of people got out of their cars and biked to school, work and for play.
During Saturday's activities, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition honored the Town of Truckee and Karen & Pete Fink for their contributions to cycling in the region.
Drunk driver sentenced for Highway 50 fatal accident
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/16/2015 - 9:59pmA trip to South Lake Tahoe for the 4th of July fireworks turned deadly in 2014 for a couple from Dixon, CA when the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a drunk driver in the Twin Bridges area.
Megan Hickel, 28, was sentenced on Monday to 12 years in state prison for killing the couple, 48-year-old Richard Schwab and his wife Kelly, age 49.
El Dorado County Superior Court Presiding Judge Suzanne Kingsbury handed down the sentence after Hickel pled guilty to two counts gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Back in the mid-1990s, the Tahoe Citizen's Committee pursued the creation of a new county at Lake Tahoe, succeeding the lake portion from the rest of Douglas and Washoe counties. The group felt that all Nevada side communities at the lake did not get their fair share of funding from their counties. The proposed county would have stretched from Incline Village at the north to Stateline on the south.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/29/2015 - 9:20amA race from Reno, around Lake Tahoe, through the Carson Valley, up to Virginia City and back to Reno began Friday morning at 7 a.m. This is the 11th year the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure is taking place and it is growing in popularity each year. There are 253 teams of an average of 12 runners each taking part in the overnight race which covers 178 miles.
Bijou Branch of El Dorado Savings closing doors Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/28/2015 - 10:52pmOn Friday, May 28 at 6 p.m., the door at Bijou Branch of El Dorado Savings Bank will close for good. They announced in January that they would close the branch and open a new one on Kingsbury Grade to better serve needs of Nevadans.
The new branch, located at 276 Kingsbury Grade (across the parking lot from 7-11), will open for business on Monday, June 1 at 9 a.m. The employees are all moving to the new location.

Forest Service project aims to eliminate invasive plants at Lake Tahoe

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will eradicate, control, and contain these plants using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September, 2015.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2015 - 9:28pmThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public input on a proposal to reconstruct the Kingsbury Stinger Trail near Kingsbury Grade. The Stinger Trail runs approximately 2.75 miles from Genoa Peak Road (Forest Road 14N32) to Terrace View Drive on lower Kingsbury Grade and is open to all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and mountain bikes. The trail is very steep in places, is prone to erosion, crosses private land for approximately 280 feet on the lower segment and no longer meets current Forest Service standards for safety and sustainability.
Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations to continue next week

Operations are scheduled southwest of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and off Gardner Street, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Edgewood Canyon on lower Kingsbury Grade and near Logan Creek Drive on the East Shore. Operations may last through the next several weeks, as long as conditions allow.

Depnding on weather conditions, South Shore operations will take place on Gardner Mountain near STHS and off of Gardner Street, in Christmas Valley, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, on Ski Run Blvd. near Heavenly Valley, on lower Kingsbury near Easy Street, Logan Creek Drive and southwest of Meeks Bay. On the Northern half, activity will be seen in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park north of Spooner Summmet off Hwy 28 and at Memorial Point near Sand Harbor.

El Dorado Savings moving one branch to Stateline

When the reconstruction of the Crescent V Center started the branch was moved to its current location at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd, which is about a mile from another branch of theirs on Al Tahoe Blvd.
A bank employee said the new branch in Nevada will open more options for their customers, including those with Nevada business accounts. They will also have a larger space for safety deposit boxes and easy parking.

It ended with her first career World Cup win, throwing down a stunning win to upset Canada's Dufur-Lapointe sisters with a huge three-point win in front of a packed house at Deer Valley Resort. Patrick Deneen (Cle Elum, WA) scored his first podium of the season finishing third behind Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Public coming up with ideas on the Loop Road/Hwy 50 Revitalization Project

Results show that 82% of the people participating believe the most important goal is to beautify the corridor and create gathering spaces for locals and visitors.
Another 67% of the respondents believe there should be efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility options, 60% said the project should revitalize the area and boost economic development.
Kingsbury Grade project completed a year ahead of schedule

Major work on the project was expected to be completed during the Summer, 2015, but instead NDOT announced that it was substantially completed this week.

Originally scheduled to continue through next summer, the project has substantially completed this week; one season ahead of the original schedule. Completing this important project ahead of schedule could not have been accomplished without the understanding of the entire community.

Halloween Cove returns to the Beach Retreat & Lodge located at 3411 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Kids will go from room to room getting treats, enjoy face painting, games, photos and music. Head for the courtyard of the hotel. It goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and it's free.
Kingsbury Grade is reopening to through traffic on Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/06/2014 - 10:26pmKingsbury Grade, which has been closed at the summit due to a $15M road construction project, is scheduled to open on Tuesday, October 7 at 6 a.m.
Construction work will continue after Tuesday's reopening for a couple of weeks. State Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) had two construction closures, one in May and the other since Labor Day. The through traffic closure was originally slated to end in mid to late October.

Dylan Sullivan appointed to El Dorado County Superior Court by Governor Brown
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/22/2014 - 10:04pmHonorable Dylan Sullivan was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to fill retiring Judge Daniel B. Proud's seat on the El Dorado County Superior Court. She won the June primary to become the Judge for Office 5, so this announcement moved up her start date by four months.
Judge Sullivan has been specifically assigned to department 7 by Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury, due to her training and experience, to assist the Court in effectively implementing criminal justice realignment in El Dorado County. She was sworn in by Kingsbury on September 19.
Update: Kingsbury Grade Fire
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/13/2014 - 8:18pmUpdate 9-14-14 12:00 p.m. - The outside deck of a home located at 111 Tramway caught fire Saturday evening, causing the closure of Kingsbury Grade. The two alarm fire moved onto the home's siding and was extinguished by a Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District engine company.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but it may be related to construction activity at the home.

Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 10:27pmHave you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.
There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.
According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."
Motorists preparing for month long Kingsbury Grade Closure
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/27/2014 - 11:58pmAs soon as the holiday visitors head home after the Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will close State Route 207 to through traffic starting Tuesday, September 2.
Kingsbury Grade will be closed at the top near Tramway Drive. The lake side of the Grade will be open but the valley side will not. NDOT will temporarily re-open SR207 for the Genoa Candy Dance September 27 and 28.
Kingsbury Fire below Ridge Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/27/2014 - 2:03pm5:35 p.m. update: Fire crews are getting a hand on a brush fire that was burning on the valley side of Kingsbury Grade. Hwy 207 is still closed at the top.
Two heavy air tankers, one single engine air tanker and one helicopter responded as well as multiple fire agencies. Containment is expected soon on the fire.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, fire numbers were near six acres and they have reevaluated it to be 1.5 acres. There is no threat to homes or structures at this time.
New signs installed along Lake Tahoe's Nevada entrances
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/18/2014 - 10:17pmPeople coming into the basin to attend the annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday will find new signs on the three Nevada entrances: Kingsbury Grade (State Route 207), Spooner Summit (U.S. Highway 50) and the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431).
The signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed — Help Protect It!” They were put up to remind everyone passing by them that Lake Tahoe is a special place that needs protecting by everyone coming to visit (and those who are already here).
BMPs Back in the Forefront With TRPA; May Be Part of Lake Tahoe Real Estate Transactions

The proposal being currently discussed is to make BMPs mandatory at Point of Sale for a home as well as discussion of them during the transaction's disclosure process. This discussion at the TRPA BMP Compliance Worksing Group meeting Tuesday brought a packed house of mostly Lake Tahoe real estate agents and brokers.
Fire Investigators Say Arsonist Started Four Brush Fires Along Lake Tahoe Hiking Trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/30/2014 - 11:11pmLake Tahoe fire officials, the U.S. Forest Service and Douglas County authorities are investigating a number of intentionally set brush fires lit near four hiking trails in the Stateline and Zephyr Cove areas.
In the past two weeks, four separate small brush fires have been started off of hiking trails, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks. Because of the nature of the fires, they are believed to have been started by the same person or persons, Brooks added.
USFS Continues Invasive Plant Elimination Project in Lake Tahoe

In South Lake Tahoe the treatment will take place at the Angora wildfire area, Baldwin Beach meadow, Burke Creek trail, Luther Pass campground, Heavenly Creek Meadow, Heavenly Ski Area, Rabe Meadow and the Spooner Summit fire station as well as at several urban lots that the Forest Service controls.
Car Free Day Held at Kingsbury Businesses
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/21/2014 - 10:49pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency closed it's parking lot to motorized staff vehicles on Friday for what has become a hallmark event for the agency.
Over 60 staff members of both TRPA and adjoining offices at their lower Kingsbury building biked, walked, used transit or a combination of these to get to work.
The 4th annual event started started as a way to get more staff members of TRPA to participate in the Tahoe Bike Challenge.
Fire Reported Near Kingsbury Middle School
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/18/2014 - 3:17pm7:45 pm update: According to Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire District's Fire Marshall, the cause of the fire by Kingsbury Middle School was human caused and is under investigation. Due to quick response by the Zephyr Fire Crew and Tahoe Douglas Firefighters, along with favorable weather, the fire only burned a 50' x 50' area. A resident in the area, Dr. Jeff Behar, rode his bike to the scene when he saw the smoke and found the crews distinguishing the fire and provided South Tahoe Now with photos.
Late Night Runners in South Lake Tahoe for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

Drivers in town might have seen the blinking arrows, informing runners of the route. Others in town reported seeing the bonfires and groups of people stationed where runners were changed. The Beachcomber Inn housed one team for a quick nap and shower before they headed to the finish.
Fox & Hound Tahoe Wins "Best Ribs" at San Juan Bautista Rib Cook Off.

Eight award winning rib teams cooked up thousands of pounds of ribs and sauces for the festival goers and judges. The Fox & Hound won 1st Place for their ribs and 2nd Place for their sauce!
The local restaurant, located at the top of Kingsbury Grade on Tramway Drive, has just begun competing in cook-offs but they have been bringing home the trophies.

Kingsbury Middle School Property Still For Sale

The minimum recommendation for bids is the appraised value of $4,000,000. The property is located at 1900 Echo Drive, Zephyr Cove, Nevada.
During Wednesday's Douglas County School Board meeting, sealed offers will be received at the 3:30 p.m. start. Oral bids may also be presented during the meeting (but they must come in at 5% or more above the highest sealed bid).
Advocates from Stateline Fight to Keep Lake Vista Apartments as Affordable Housing

It was built in 2000 under a special agreement with the TRPA to replenish the Nevada side's affordable housing stock after the number of units at the complex on Kahle Drive was dramatically reduced in order to restore the meadow. The complex was built on a USDA affordable housing tax credit program which specified a minimum of 15 years of affordable housing use.

The first "thirst parlor," the Genoa Bar, came along two years later to serve drinks to those traveling the California Trail as well as others finding themselves in the West.

Two injuried in Kingsbury Grade Accident
Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/24/2014 - 6:45pmA two car accident on Kingsbury Grade Thursday afternoon resulted both drivers being transported to Renown Medical Center by helicopter.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the head-on collision which occurred about halfway down on the valley side of the State Route 207/Kingsbury Grade.
The crash happened about 12:45 p.m.and the road was closed for about two hours.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 04/24/2014 - 1:41pm1 p.m. Thursday - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire and Paramedics are responding to a motor vehicle accident on SR 207/Kingsbury Grade halfway way down on the Valley Side.
Residents and commuters are asked to use an alternate route at this time.
