Kiwanis 16th annual SeptOberfest

The Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra Club is holding their 16th annual SeptOberfest on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at MontBleu Casino Resort from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Once again they offer beer tasting, German buffet, wine tasting, a beer garden, a stein holding contest, music, dancing, silent and live auction and a lot of fun. They are also bringing back their famous envelopes full of great prizes.

Tickets are $50 if purchased before September 8, $55 after that date.

The South Lake Tahoe Library just wrapped up another great Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children, teens and adults to read all summer long. Patrons at our library logged a total of 5,236 books and earned a total of 817 prizes! We would like to thank the businesses and organizations that donated prizes and funds to our program.

Prizes that children could choose from included gift certificates from Applebee’s Restaurant, Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza, Heavenly Village Cinema, McDonalds, and Modern Makers. Thank you to all of these businesses for their generous donations!

Kiwanis SeptOberfest coming to Lake Tahoe

Mark your calendars and plan to join the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra for their 16th annual SeptOberfest on Thursday, September 27 at MontBleu Resort in Lake Tahoe.

Not only will attendees get a German buffet dinner, seasonal beer from the biergarten and wine tasting, but they can also participate in the famous Beer Stein Holding Contest, dance the night away, bid on amazing items and walk away with their special prize envelopes.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe: National Night Out

The public and public safety agencies came out for National Night Out on August 7 at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Booths were set up by California Highway Patrol, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Barton Heath, California Conservation Corps, South Lake Tahoe Action Team, El Dorado County STAR, El Dorado County Sheriff's Search & Rescue, South Lake Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and the El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Food was provided by Kiwanis.

The event was also a toy drop off for Toys For Tots.

SLT Library hosting free outdoor concert with Jaguar World Music

The South Lake Tahoe Library is a free outdoor concert featuring Jaguar World Music on Friday, July 27 at 2:00 p.m.

Jaguar World Music will play musical instruments from all over the world, including flutes and stringed instruments. Learn about unique Aztec and Mayan flutes while enjoying Andean music.

The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. Bring the whole family for this outdoor performance.

$126,000 in scholarships being awarded to 81 LTCC students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College is excited to present its annual scholarship awards to 81 deserving students at a special luncheon taking place on Friday, June 29 – the same day as the college’s graduation ceremony. The 2017/2018 academic year was a record-breaking year of scholarship fundraising for the LTCC Foundation, with generous donors supporting the granting of 120 awards amounting to more than $126,000.

Mt. Tallac celebrates their 76 graduates

"Congratulations on completing the first act of your lives," Keynote Speaker Leon Malmud told the graduates of Mt. Tallac High School Friday. "Leave charged with a sense of possibilities.

Malmud, a South Lake Tahoe resident and author who survived WWII by being hidden by a French family, gave the 76 students a list of lessons as they go forward:

First/second grade winners at 34th annual Kiwanis / Katey Fagan Spelling Bee

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe held their 34th annual Spelling Bee on Thursday, with students from the four South Lake Tahoe elementary schools taking part: Tahoe Valley, Sierra House, Bijou and Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet.

The students from the Magnet School won first place in the 1st/2ndh grade division at the bee which is now named the Katey Fagan Spelling Bee in honor of a local Kiwanian who died in 2017.

Bijou won 3rd/4th grades and the Magnet School also won grade 5.

Due to a overnight school field trip previously scheduled to Coloma, the Bijou student winners will be represented by another group of talented spellers in the county finals on May 11.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) was awarded a Community Service Grant from the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation. The grant was in the amount of $1,800 and will be applied to our Motel to Housing Loan Program. SJCLT Board Members, Lyn Barnett and MaryAnne Brand attended the awards ceremony at a luncheon held in Harrah’s South Lake Tahoe.

Kudos: Drug Store Project successful due to community partnerships

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe holds 36th annual Crab Feed

Grab your bibs and crackers, the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe is holding their 36th annual Crab Feed on Friday, March 30 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe. The popular event will have a new menu item added this year - Prime Rib.

The cost is $55 for adults, $25 for kids under 12 and includes iced crab, prime rib, soup, salad, bread, dessert, coffee and tea.

Not only will there be great food, but the energetic 7-piece dance band, Musicole, will provide the entertainment.

An extensive silent auction and no-host bar will round out the evening.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is a service organization that dedicates its members to supporting charities and events which benefit the community, especially children. Every month the Kiwanis Club selects a different community program or organization to support, and for the month of January, the club has sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” for the last eight years.

South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship

American Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.

On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

Fire Fest returns to the South Shore

Admission is free and the event is a great opportunity for families to have fun while learning about safety and conservation.

$475,000 awarded to 118 South Tahoe High seniors

During a series of recent awards ceremonies, South Tahoe High(STHS) students were recognized for academic success, attendance and bilingual immersion.

The annual Senior Awards Night saw 118 students recognized with $475,000 in scholarships. During the evening, 64 individual presentations honored one or more students for achievements.

Kiwanis holding Ham Bingo in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is holding their annual Ham Bingo on Saturday, April 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Theresa's Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe. This is a family friendly event and prizes for young and old are given away each game, with hams given away to several grand prize winners!

It is just 25 cents per card will free entry, free coffee and free popcorn. Hotdogs, bottled water and soda will be sold for $1 each.

All money raised will go to Mr. Matteucci's 4th grade class at Tahoe Valley Elementary for their Sutter's Fort Project.

Choices for Children and the City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Services hosted Day of the Young Child on Saturday March 11, 2017. Twenty-seven agencies came together to offer a wide variety of early childhood activities including art, sensory activities and physical activities. Children enjoyed face painting, beading, painting, play
dough, planting, rock climbing, paper collages, chalk art, Pequeños Rascal Learning Center dancers and more. It truly was a lively day for families to connect and get information on community resources.

It is always a treat when the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra hosts a Bread & Broth ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’. Not only has the Kiwanis Club sponsored an Adopt A Day every January since the program’s inception in 2010, but they were the first organization to host an AAD dinner when the program was introduced. Bread & Broth is so fortunate to have the on-going support of the dedicated Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra.

South Lake Tahoe Endowment gives out $50,000 in grants to local schools and nonprofits

The South Lake Tahoe Endowment Cabinet awarded $50,000 to South Lake Tahoe area non-profits and schools during a recent reception at South Tahoe High School.

Wendy David, the Cabinet Chair, awarded the grants to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.

Private donors fund the Foundation with money to be given back to the community in the form of grants.

American Century Golf hands out over $50,000 to local nonprofits

Trick-or-Treat events for the family in South Lake Tahoe

The 14th Annual Halloween Treat Street will be held at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) on Halloween from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the school's physical education building. This is a safe, warm (and dry) indoor event hosted by radio station KRLT 93.9FM/KOWL 1490AM.

SLT Moose Lodge announces annual fishing derby winners

Almost 200 children participated in the 15th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids' Fishing Derby on Sunday at Lake Baron.

Travis Bank reeled in a 3.5 pound trout to win the derby, and took home a $100 Savings Certificate from El Dorado Savings. 2nd place winner Chance Rice won second place and a $50 Savings Certificate with his 3.2 lb trout. Third place winner Dillon Switzer also won a $50 Savings Certificate for his 2.5 lb catch.

Over 140 raffle prizes given out to the children.

Reminder: Annual Firefest venue and activities have changed!

Due to a venue conflict, the 2016 FireFest will be held at Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

Lake Baron closed to public as it's stocked with 1,000 pounds of fish for annual derby

Lake Baron in Tahoe Paradise Park will be closed to the public from 2:00 p.m. Friday to 2:00 p.m. Sunday as final preparations are made for the 15th annual Kid's Fishing Derby. They will be stocking the lake with almost 1,000 pounds of catchable and trophy sized trout.

The annual event, for kids up to the age of 16, is provided free of charge by the Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Sunday, September 18 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Free food and prizes for kids as well as a chance to take home prize money for the largest fish caught.

Kiwanis holding 14th annual SeptOberfest in South Lake Tahoe

Aktion Club holds community Bake Sale Saturday

The Aktion Club will be having their annual bake sale at Grocery Outlet on Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Homemade cookies, cakes, brownies and other yummy treats will be sold to support the Aktion Club fundraising activities. The Aktion Club is made up of adults over the age of 18 who have a disability. Through the club they learn leadership and community involvement.

The South Shore's Firefest 2016 moved to Hard Rock Hotel

FireFest is back! This year's event will be held on Saturday, September 24 at the Hard Rock Hotel parking lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fire Fest is a free annual event that highlights fire and life safety for children and families.

Sit in a fire truck, escape from the Smoke House, wear firefighting equipment, squirt fire hoses, play in a bounce house, meet Smokey Bear and Sparky, watch fire departments compete, learn about fire resistant construction and enjoy a Kiwanis BBQ!

Ladder trucks, helicopters and a lot of other fire equipment will be there for people to enjoy.

Moose Lodge hosting 15th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lake Baron

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge is hosting their 15th annual Kids' Fishing Derby on Sunday, September 18, at Tahoe Paradise’s Lake Baron. Families find this event fun and exciting, and it is free to all children under the age of 16. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. at Lake Baron, near the main entrance.

Hot Dogs, Chips, Sodas, and water are provided free to all registered children and are available for purchase by others. The event wraps up at 1:00 p.m.

Opinion: Why it's time to run for city council

My name is Tamara Wallace and I am a candidate for South Lake Tahoe City Council. To begin with, I have vowed to not accept the pay that comes from holding office.

In a letter to City Clerk Susie Alessi, it was officially stated that if elected I would not accept the recently doubled Council salary of almost $1,000 per month. Being a fiscal conservative, I feel being careful with taxpayer dollars should start with me.

Tamara Wallace’s campaign slogan is “it’s Time.”

I believes that the voters feel as I do.

Wooden Boat Classic returns to the Tahoe Keys this weekend

The South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic returns to the Tahoe Keys Marina this weekend with a celebration of vintage raceboats. Featured will be industrialist Henry Kaiser, Jr.'s one-of-a-kind 1930 Gar Wood Hornet II and his 1955 Scooter Too with its huge and extremely rare 24-cylinder Allison engine. Both hydroplanes are racing legends. Also on display will be the 1913 Redskin, the 1950's movie star Hurricane IV and the all-aluminium experimental Shanty II.

Zen Garden created in memory of Live Violence Free staff member

Jen Kline, a 15-year-employee with Live Violence Free, passed away suddenly on March 18, 2016 at the age of 46. The unexpected death caught everyone by surprise from family and friends to those she served in Alpine County through her position as the non-profit agency's coordinator.

"We were totally shocked," LVF Executive Director Jane Flavin said of Kline's passing.

2nd annual South Tahoe Beach Wrestling Championships on Saturday

Beach wrestling is returning to South Lake Tahoe and everyone is invited to participate. Local wrestling coaches Ryan Wallace and Dave Borges are continuing with the success of their inaugural event in 2015, and holding their 2nd annual tournament on Saturday, July 16 at 9:00 a.m. on El Dorado Beach at Lakeview Commons.

Once again, South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe are sponsoring the event along with the help of the South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League (PAL).

Not too late to participate in Tahoe Bike Challenge; Celebration June 18

For two weeks every year, Lake Tahoe area commuters, students and recreational riders get on their bikes instead of in the cars to get to where they need to go. This year's event started on June 1 and goes until June 14 so there are just a few days to make your bike rides count.

In addition to all the other reasons to participate (including that it is fun & free), the data collected goes to help show the need for bicycle paths and other infrastructure when we apply for grants and other funding.

Howard Bittner - March 7, 1950 to April 17, 2016

Howard Bittner, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident and chiropractor died April 17, 2016 after fighting a lengthy illness. He was 66.

Howard had been struggling with Pemphigus Vulgaris, an autoimmune disease, for the last 18 months.

Howard Henry Bittner was born on March 7, 1950, in Akron, Ohio. After growing up in Arizona and California, he attended Santa Barbara Community College before enlisting in the Navy. Howard graduated with honors from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa in 1980.
