2:20 p.m. update - Highway 50 is open with no controls at Kyburz.

KYBURZ, Calif. - If you are traveling over Echo Summit today you may want to take a different route, or plan on extra time on the road.

The California Highway Patrol has responded to a major crash between two SUVs in the Whitehall Canyon area near Kyburz. Initial reports show a car turning onto the highway was struck at about 11:30 a.m. and the aftermath is causing a big delay with eastbound traffic starting at Bridle Veil Falls.

At least one person has been transported.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Basin and El Dorado County Roadwork schedule for Caltrans projects.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

State Routes 28/89 (El Dorado and Placer County): Work continues on a $4.8 million project to remove dead and dying trees from State Routes 28 and 89 in various locations of El Dorado and Placer counties. Completion is expected this fall. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled.

The Highway 50 Wagon Train will once again traverse the Sierra this week, just as the pioneers of the 1800s once did. People seeking riches headed west after gold was discovered near Placerville in 1849, but their routes were varied as very few had traveled that direction before them.

The following is a list of Caltrans projects at Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County. Most traffic-interfering work will be limited through 10 p.m. Monday, May 27 for the Memorial Day Weekend.

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

Joe Johnson, 37, was arrested on a felony charge of manufacturing a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a police officer.
