Businesses recognized for keeping Lake Tahoe blue

The League to Save Lake Tahoe has launched a program that recognizes Tahoe-based businesses taking action to protect Lake Tahoe.

So far, nine local businesses have pledged their commitment to Keep Tahoe Blue: Azul Latin Kitchen, Ernie’s Coffee Shop, High Sierra Gardens, Lake of the Sky Outfitters, RISE Designs, Tahoe Blue Vodka, Tahoe Sports & Entertainment, Tahoe Training Camps, and The Free Bird.

PCT hikers find comfort, supplies and angels in South Lake Tahoe

What gained in popularity with the movie and book by Cheryl Strayed, "Wild," people are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in record numbers, and many of them stop by South Lake Tahoe on their way from border to border.

To date, Lake of the Sky Outfitters at the South Lake Tahoe "Y" has seen about 650 of the PCT hikers stop by. Being the largest city near the 2,650 mile trail that takes most hikers about five months to complete, the community offers what many of them seek on "zero days": supplies, motels, a shower, lots of food and mail.

League to Save Lake Tahoe hosts 4th annual Summer Kickoff

The public is invited to the League to Save Lake Tahoe's 4th annual Summer Kickoff party at their South Lake Tahoe location from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24. They will have a native garden tour with helpful growing tips, live music, food and drink, raffle and more.

All people riding their bike to the event will get a surpirse award.

The League's offices are located at 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Experts from Tahoe Outdoor Living will conduct tours of the League's gardens. Ice cold beer to be donated by Blue Moon Brewing and the food will be provided by The Cork & More.

Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing the movie "Third Man on the Mountain", a Disney classic about a young man trying to fulfill his fathers quest to to climb the mountain that killed him, "The Citadel". Filmed on and around the Matterhorn the film accurately depicts the climbing style and equipment of the Golden Age of mountaineering. The actors had to learn to climb to make the movie more realistic.

Sierra Club applauds Liberty Utilities' stand against coal

Liberty Utilities no longer wants to receive energy produced by coal so they have asked to end their contract with NV Energy's North Valmy Coal plant. Instead they are asking for a new contract that excludes all coal-fired resources.

Up to 20% of all power currently sent to Lake Tahoe comes from the large coal plant in Nevada as part of the existing contract with NV Energy, which ends in December.

Emmy-winning film "Chasing Ice" comes to LTCC this Friday

Volunteers Remove 2,260 Pounds of Trash From Six Lake Tahoe Beaches

Thousands flocked to Lake Tahoe beaches for the 4th of July and left behind thousands of pounds of trash. Several groups have been participating in the Adopt a Beach cleanup program that is getting volunteers out to clean up the mess, both trash and fireworks debris.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe had over 120 volunteers participate in their annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue Beach Cleanup. They cleaned at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Shoals on the East Shore, and Kiva, Regan and El Dorado beaches on the South Shore for a total of about 3 miles of shoreline.

Lake of the Sky Outfitters Hosts The Sugar Pine Foundation

Lake of the Sky Outfitters is proud to host The Sugar Pine Foundation on Thursday September 27th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at 1023 Emerald Bay Rd. Come and hear about the important work the Foundation is doing to save the magnificant Sugar Pine, and all other Sierra Nevada five needle pines, from the invasive Asian Blister Rust Fungus. This disease is decimating stands of Sugar Pines in the basin and elsewhere in the range.

Lake of the Sky Outfitters will host an evening with the Sugar Pine Foundation. They will be showing a DVD and speaking about the threat facing the magnificant Sugar Pine in the Sierra Nevada and how they are working to save the species.
Refreshments will be serves and in keeping with our tradition there will be a free raffle afterwards

An Evening With Robert Hannah, Great Great Grandson of John Muir

Lake of the Sky Outfitters and Range of Light will be hosting an evening with Robert Hannah who is the Great Great Grandson of John Muir. It is sure to be an interesting and enjoyable time. Admission is free but tickets are required so that we do not exceed the legal capcity of the room.
