The community is invited to attend the 22nd annual Holiday Extravaganza in the MontBleu Showroom on Wednesday, December 14 and Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. each evening.
Since 1995, Lake Tahoe Unified School District choirs from the 3rd through 12th grades have performed on the stage for their holiday concert. They will once again be joined by the Faculty/Parent choir, Blue Ribbon Classical Choir, all who sing together for the big finale.
SLT flags at half-staff after death of former Councilman Bill Crawford

In honor of his service to the community, all City flags will be lowered to half-staff through Friday, December 2.
More ballots counted; South Lake Tahoe election results remain the same
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/23/2016 - 8:15pmOn Wednesday, the El Dorado County Elections Department released more results from the November 8 election. There are still approximately 200-300 ballots remaining to count from County Supervisor District 5 which is from Pollock Pines to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoma.
"We'd like to not wait until the December 6 deadline, but there are quite a few provisional ballots left to count," said Justin Canning of El Dorado County.
All ballots must be certified 28 days after the election, hence their December 6 deadline.

After nine years on the board, Dr. Larry Green chose to not seek a third term, and Dr. Michael Doyle lost in his re-election bid. Adam Jones filled the seat of Sue Novasel for the past two years after she became a county supervisor. He chose not to run this November.
Ballot tally updated: South Lake Tahoe election results remain the same
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/16/2016 - 9:50pmNovember 17, 2:30 p.m. update: There are about 500 provisional ballots from the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers areas that need to be counted, along with a few mail-in ballots.
According to Linda Webster, Assistant Registrar of Voters for the County, there are a few mail-in ballots still to be counted county-wide. She expects there will be an update to the returns before Thanksgiving with a final release of figures right after the holiday. It will be that final report that will include the provisional ballot count.
El Dorado County still needs to count over 23,000 votes
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/16/2016 - 12:12amThe election was seven days ago, but the final ballots cast in El Dorado County have yet to be tabulated, and it might not be until Friday for the results of over 20,000 ballots are released. Another 3,000 provisional ballots should be counted by Monday.
As of 5:00 p.m. November 15, the 20,000 ballots were about to be scanned.
Public invited to Open House at South Tahoe High for new teen resource room
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 1:35pmThe community is invited to an Open House at the new Teen Resource Room at South Tahoe High on Wednesday, November 16 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in room C-1 at the school which is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.
Students use the room to get needed clothing including hats and coats, school supplies and food, as well as bicycles. Counseling services are also offered in the room.
Barton Foundation awards $40,000 to groups addressing local health needs

During a recent luncheon, grants were handed out to Live Violence Free, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - El Dorado Chapter, SOS Outreach, South Tahoe Family Resource Center, Tahoe Art League, Tahoe Magic, Tahoe Turning Point, and Tahoe Youth & Family Services.

Former councilwoman Brooke Laine and hospital executive Jason Collin will be headed to the South Lake Tahoe City Council in what turned out to be a close race with local politics newcomer, Tamara Wallace. Current Councilwoman JoAnn Conner will not be returning for a second term.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District Performing Arts Department will be presenting a a Veterans Musical Tribute on Thursday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the South Tahoe Middle School's multi-purpose room.
This annual concert is a wonderful tribute to the men and women who have served, or are currently serving, our country in the various branches of the military. LTUSD is inviting all veterans and their families, as well as the rest of the community, to attend their concert to honor and thank them for their brave and selfless duty.

No Whooping Cough outbreak in South Lake Tahoe

A 4th grade student became sick with symptoms that resemble pertussis, but that cannot be confirmed for two weeks.

Sierra House wins Let's Move! Active Schools National Award

Today's physical education at schools has taken on a whole new focus, and Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe is being honored for what they do on a daily basis.
The school received recognition for their outstanding efforts in creating an active school environment under First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, Her plan is dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools.

The state line is a blur to me because I view the South Shore as one community. I have two children currently in high school, one at Whittell and one at STHS; I also have another child who graduated from Whittell and is now a college freshman. I believe that a good public education system is the great equalizer in America, and that every child has a right to the best education possible.

Stump speeches and meeting candidates via a speed-dating format will give voters in the South Lake Tahoe area a way to get to know their future elected officials on October 25 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 5:30 p.m. to 7::45 p.m.
The evening will start out with each candidate for South Lake Tahoe City Council as well as the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Lake Tahoe Community College and South Tahoe Public Utility District boards, giving a 1.5 minute "stump speech." Angela Swanson back on Lake Tahoe Unified School Board
Submitted by admin on Tue, 09/27/2016 - 10:17pmAngela Swanson, who was a Lake Tahoe Unified School Board member from 2005-2009 is back on the board, this time to replace Ginger Nicolay-Davis who left in June to accept a job with the school district. She was interviewed and voted in Tuesday night during the LTUSD board meeting. Her term will last until December, 2018.
The school district accepted applications for the open seat, and Swanson was the lone candidate so Tuesday's interview and vote was just a formality.
Swanson also served on the South Lake Tahoe City Council for a term from 2010-2014.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/15/2016 - 2:52pmDuring Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Trustees, Board President, Barbara Bannar, administered the "Oath of Office" to this year's designated Student Representative, South Tahoe High's ASB President Kendra Conard.
Conard, 17, said she is looking forward to her year as the representative on the board.
As ASB President, Conard said her main goals this year will be to get more students involved in school activities, for them to get more school spirit, and to connect the South Lake Tahoe community more with South Tahoe High and their students.

The seat opened up when Ginger Nicolay-Davis, the Board Member from Trustee Area 2, had to leave the board when she was hired by LTUSD as a speech pathologist.

At Tahoe Valley Elementary, not only were the doors opened, but the red carpet was rolled out, literally. Staff and members of the California Highway Patrol greeted students as they entered the school with fanfare and balloon in celebration of their return.
Not only did the students enjoy the processional, but parents, staff and officers did as well.

Trustee Ginger Nicolay-Davis resigns from school board, opens up Area 2 seat

During their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 23, the LTUSD board will officially announce the opening on the board and their intent to appoint a new trustee who must reside in Trustee Area #2.
Nicolay-Davis resigned effective August 9.
LTUSD gets large rebate check from Liberty Utilities

“We’re always happy to reward customers with a rebate whenever they install energy efficient measures that reduce their electric use, especially when it’s a public entity like a school,” stated Randy Kelly, Liberty Utilities’ Operations Manager.

Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1930, Magliari, the son of an Italian immigrant, graduated in 1948 from George Washington High School, where he served as student body president. While attending Los Angeles City College Magliari enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called into active duty during the Korean War in 1951.

Ryann, and eighth grader at South Tahoe Middle School, has missed just one day of school in her life, and that was one day in kindergarten so she has eight consecutive years of perfect attendance. Her sister, Morgan, a fifth grader at Tahoe Valley Elementary has had perfect attendance throughout her six-year (to-date) school career, including a year of transitional kindergarten.

On Tuesday evening, LTUSD honored driver Coral Lathrop with their Bus Driver of the Year award. Lathrop has been driving full time since 2014, and is a favorite amount parents, kids and fellow drivers.

Not only do people around South Lake Tahoe get the opportunity to watch international stars of men's cycling on Thursday, they also get to watch the women as the Amgen Tour of California features both races.
There will be a Lifestyle Festival in the parking lot at Heavenly California Base Lodge from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is the starting and ending point for the women's race, as well as the finish for the men, so a great viewing spot, but there are other opportunities to watch the cyclists as they zip by all through town.
Phase one of community playfield project to break ground

The Community Playfields Expansion Project will bring two new playfields to the area as work gets underway on the Community Playfields Expansion Project adjacent to the current soccer field at the college.
LTUSD appeals South Tahoe High accreditation results
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/12/2016 - 1:36pmThe Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) didn't give South Tahoe High the results the school was expecting after the recent visit by the group's visiting accreditation committee, so they have begun the appeal process.
After the committee left South Tahoe High, they told Principal Chad Houck they were impressed with what they saw, so a recommendation for the school to be placed on a two-year probationary accreditation caught Houck and other school district leaders by surprise and was contrary to what they led him to believe while they were in South Lake Tahoe.

Governed by a team of five members, only Board President Barbara Bannar and member Ginger Nicolay-Davis are not up for re-election. Seats held by incumbents Adam Jones, Dr. Michael Doyle and Dr. Larry Green will be on the ballot.
Adam Jones, who represents Trustee Area #1, was appointed to the Board in March 2015 following the resignation of Sue Novasel.
Women of the Moose in SLT help local homeless youth

WOTM help out with the kids who are part of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's McKinney Vento program. LTUSD receives an annual allocation of about $1,000 to purchase school supplies and help with bus transportation for its approximately 250 homeless students.

The Lake Spirit Awards honor people making real progress at restoring Lake Tahoe. Created in 2011, the awards are a way to recognize those individuals whose passion for Tahoe results in progress and environmental improvements.
