Over 500 South Lake Tahoe Students Complete We Can! Program

Congratulations to the five hundred and sixty-seven students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District who participated in Barton Health’s sixth annual We Can! program. We Can, which stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition, is a 7-week program designed for 4th and 5th graders that encourages healthy eating habits, activity, exercise, and overall wellness. We Can! is a national program that is implemented locally by Barton Health and the school district’s physical education teachers.

Angela Swanson Announces Run for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors

South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Angela Swanson has declared her candidacy for El Dorado County Supervisor District 5. "There is no better time to jump in," said Swanson of her announcement. "I am in the final year of my council term and will leave office having accomplished many of my goals and with an in-depth knowledge of the key issues affecting the district." Swanson cites economic redevelopment, smart growth and community investment as her top priorities along with building cohesiveness within the newly expanded district.

The Family Resource Center is hosting a Cafecitos Gathering on November 5th for all Spanish-speaking parents that have a child in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Cafecitos is similar to PTA. The gathering is designed to engage parents in school success, and provides an opportunity to formulate ideas on how parents and schools can work together more effectively. We will be meeting at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Aspen Room from 9:30am to 10:30am on November 5th. The Family Resource Center will donate coffee and pastries for your enjoyment.

284 South Lake Tahoe Students Earn Free Ski Passes to Sierra At Tahoe!

Sierra At Tahoe has once again issued free ski passes to students of Lake Tahoe Unified School District that earned straight A's (or a 4.0 GPA)for 2 consecutive trimesters.

During the 201213 school year 284 students qualified to earn the pass.

Letters are going out to students this week with instructions on how to pick up their free ski pass.

2013 Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Food Fest

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will have its annual signature fundraiser, The Fall Food Fest, on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harvey’s Convention Center. This fun community event will feature great food by local restaurants, beer, wine, tequila, and vodka tasting, silent and live auctions with wonderful donations by local businesses, and live music. The money from this fundraiser is used to fund over $50,000 in grants that are given to LTUSD schools during the school year.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Enrollment Up

For the first time since 1996, enrollment in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District appears to be on an upward trend. There are 102 new students in the district so far this school year, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 3,832.

This figure is still far below the number of students attending local school in the 1996-1997 school year when there were 5,978 in grades K to 12.

Transgender Bill for School Equality is Passed Into Law

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 1266 which allows transgender youth to use whatever bathroom and participate on whichever sports team they believe matches their gender identity. This groundbreaking bill gives students in public K-12 schools the right "to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities" based on their self-perception, regardless of their birth gender.

Air Quality Improves - LTUSD to let kids play outside

Air quality in South Lake Tahoe has improved though smoke still remains evident throughout the region. Lake Tahoe Unified School District is allowing students to be outdoors since the air quality improved to moderate with an AQI of 88 this morning (since the decision was made the air quality has improved to AQI 66). AQI is the air quality index.

Unusually sensitive people should still consider reducing prolonged or heavy exertion.

Unhealthy Air in South Lake Tahoe Triggers Outdoor Restrictions at Local Schools

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District has issued restrictions to outdoor activities due to the unhealthy condition of the air in South Lake Tahoe due to the Rim Fire.

All recesses will be conducted indoors and all afternoon sports practices will be restricted. These conditions will be lifted should air quality improve during the day.

The Result of Five Years of Planning and Building to be Unveiled Friday

There will be a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at South Tahoe High to celebrate the newly completed Sports Medicine Building on Friday, August 23 at 10 am. The public is invited to attend and tour all of the new buildings. The ceremony will include messages by Lake Tahoe Unified School District Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater , school board, community and student members. View the program.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center hosts bird and native species festivals

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will host the fourth annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival on Saturday, June 8, followed by the third annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 9.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend these free family events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District graduation, drop out rates mirror positive state trends

The percentage of Lake Tahoe Unified School District students who earned a diploma inched higher this year according to data released Tuesday by the California Department of Education.

The high school graduation rate rose and the dropout rate decreased in LTUSD during the 2011-12 school year.

Most phone lines restored at LTCC

The majority of Lake Tahoe Community College’s phone lines were to be back and operational by the end of Friday, according to a news release. Voicemail on all lines was also projected to be operational at the end of the day.
