NHP prepares for bikers in the area for Street Vibrations

The primary events will be located in Reno and Sparks but other events are scheduled in Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. Organizers are expecting between 50,000 and 100,000 participants and with the influx of visitors to the area, the number of traffic related issues are expected to increase.
Dylan Sullivan appointed to El Dorado County Superior Court by Governor Brown
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/22/2014 - 10:04pmHonorable Dylan Sullivan was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to fill retiring Judge Daniel B. Proud's seat on the El Dorado County Superior Court. She won the June primary to become the Judge for Office 5, so this announcement moved up her start date by four months.
Judge Sullivan has been specifically assigned to department 7 by Presiding Judge Suzanne N. Kingsbury, due to her training and experience, to assist the Court in effectively implementing criminal justice realignment in El Dorado County. She was sworn in by Kingsbury on September 19.

DUI Checkpoints in South Lake Tahoe on Friday and Saturday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/02/2014 - 8:51pmThe California Highway Patrol, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be joining forces over the holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe by conducting sobriety, car safety and driver's license checkpoints on both sides of the state line.
The California Highway Patrol will have their checkpoint in Meyers on Saturday, July 5 on U.S. Highway 50 between Pioneer Trail and State Route 89. It will be staffed by officers who are trained in the detection of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers.
Drunk and Unsafe Boaters Targeted During This Weekend's Operation Dry Water

Operation Dry Water is an annual nationwide effort to highlight the risks and dangers of operating boats under the influence. The stepped up enforcement raises awareness of operating boats under the influence of alcohol or drugs in advance of the Fourth of July holiday.

South Lake Tahoe Police Step Up Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/21/2014 - 11:09pmThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department will conduct targeted pedestrian and bicycle safety law enforcement this summer in order to reduce accidents. They will be deploying officers on bicycles and motorcycles to educate the public.
In 2013, the South Lake Tahoe Police department conducted 42 injury traffic collision investigations that involved serious and/or fatal injuries. 10 of those collisions involved bicycles and 5 involved pedestrians.
Proposition 42: Results Showing Voters Approve More Protection to Open Meeting Law

Proposition 42 requires local government compliance with laws providing for public access to local government body meetings and records of government officials.

City of South Lake Tahoe Has No Choice But to Repeal Sex Offender Ordinance
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/21/2014 - 11:48amDue to a ruling by the California Court of Appeals, the City of South Lake Tahoe can no longer enforce their sex offender ordinance which made it a misdemeanor for sex offenders to be within 300 feet of a school, park or recreation areas. During Tuesday's meeting, the City Council had to repeal the ordinance. To be official, the City Council will have a second reading and vote on the item in June.
"This is mind boggling," said City Councilwoman JoAnn Connor. "I am disgusted that the court has decided to ignore children in deference to sexual predators."

In a ceremony in front of the police station, Police Chief Brian Uhler bestowed the following awards:

NHP Keeping an Eye on Bicyclists and Motorists on the Road

Now its turn for the NHP to turn the tables and watch for bicyclists not in compliance.
Puppy Mill Protest in Reno on Saturday

"The event is being called to show the Reno and Sparks City Councils and the Washoe County Commission that citizens mean business when it comes to a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in retail stores in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village," stated Billy Howard, Founding Organizer for the popular initiative Puppy Mill Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe.
Share The Road Campaign Started in Northern Nevada

They will be stepping up enforcement to ensure that motor vehicles are sharing the roads with the bicyclists and reducing the accidents between the two.
Spring is here which means Nevadans will be taking to the road to get some exercise and soak up some sun, so you will begin to see more people biking along the roads in Nevada.

This November, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department will explore that question in its production of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” by Moisés Kaufman, Stephen Belber, Leigh Fondakowski, and Greg Pierotti. The play seeks to understand a town that is forced to cope with the aftermath of a brutal hate crime, while also facing their own biases and fears under the media spotlight.
License Your Dog During Amnesty Days

During the two month amnesty licensing period, the penalty fees for late, expired, and never-licensed spayed or neutered dogs will be waived by Animal Services.
Former South Lake Tahoe police officer sentenced to 18 months in prison

Mueller on Wednesday sentenced former South Lake Tahoe police officer John Gerald Poland, 45, to 18 months in prison for one count of obstruction of an official proceeding. He was ordered to self-surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on Nov. 6.

Possession of fireworks of any kind, including sparklers, is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin and campfires are not permitted on National Forest beaches or in the general forest. For those planning to barbecue on the beach, the Forest Service requires the use of portable gas stoves.

Nevada won't recognize Arizona concealed weapon permits

At a Feb. 28 meeting of the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association, the groups unanimously agreed to end the recognition of concealed weapon permits. According to a news release, the action was taken in accordance with Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689.
