History Hike to Glen Alpine Springs

While many may hike past Lily Lake to get to a myriad of trails going through Desolation Wilderness, I took the trail to go the historic Glen Alpine Springs. Even though my walk was mid-day on October 13, I passed many other hikers on the two-mile hike, all enjoying the warm, un-fall like weather.

Even though I've lived in South Lake Tahoe for 36 years, I'd never gone past Lily Lake. Wanting to get to the springs before winter, there was no time like the present to finally accomplish that task!

Tahoe's Search and Rescue team responds to 150-200 calls a year

You're hiking along the trails of Lake Tahoe, fall and break your ankle. How do you get to the hospital? You're exploring the valleys and canyons of the Sierra, it gets dark and you don't know where you are. How do you get to safety? You've fallen on the slippery rocks of a waterfall and can't get out. Who do you call?

El Dorado Search and Rescue (SAR) is the answer to all of these questions and dozens more. Annually, the volunteers and deputies that make up SAR handle between 150 and 200 calls in the county portion of the Tahoe basin (AKA the east slope).

Two juveniles, ages 14 and 15, were arrested for vandalizing South Tahoe High and Mt. Tallac High Schools. The incidents occurred in May and June in the rest rooms at both schools, the STHS football stadium and on the siding of the school.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department says there are more arrests to be made.

At the end of May and beginning of June of this year, kids broke into the rest rooms, started fires with paper towels and toilet paper and destroyed the interiors, tagged the exterior walls of the new wing at the school, and toilet-papered the football stadium.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District to focus on keeping kids in school

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District is renewing their focus on raising the attendance rates of students in the district's seven schools. Not only is being at school essential to a good education, it's also essential to the District's budget.

On Tuesday, the LTUSD Board will vote on a proclamation to declare September as "Attendance Awareness Month." They want parents, students, teachers, staff, administrators and the community to focus on "Every School Day Matters" and help keep kids in school.

During the 2013/14 school year, the attendance rates were:

Enrollment up for South Lake Tahoe schools

The first week of school in South Lake Tahoe is in the books, and the early numbers show that enrollment is up for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's seven schools.

Many students had to miss the first day of school since they didn't have their paperwork and immunizations completed, which are both required to attend local schools.

Angie Keil, the Public Information Officer for LTUSD, said that it was a hectic first week of school but so far the enrollment numbers show that there are 3,877 students in school. This is up by 156 from the end of school figures from June.

While that tradition is in tact, the way caps and gowns are handled are changing.

Found It! Modern-day treasure hunting in Tahoe

Geocaching is a relatively new pursuit, a high-tech treasure hunt. Simply put, people hide things — in the desert, in the forest, in the Harrahs parking lot, at the top of Mt. Tallac, at the bottom of Lake Tahoe — and then other people go and find those things.

New earthquake technology reveals Lake Tahoe faults could generate large events

CARNELIAN BAY — Results of a new U.S. Geological Survey study found that faults west of Lake Tahoe, Calif., referred to as the Tahoe-Sierra frontal fault zone, pose a substantial increase in the seismic hazard assessment for the Lake Tahoe region of California and Nevada, and could potentially generate earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.3 to 6.9. A close association of landslide deposits and active faults also suggests that there is an earthquake-induced landslide hazard along the steep fault-formed range front west of Lake Tahoe.
