SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a fire alarm at Tahoe Valley Elementary school Tuesday morning. A Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) maintenance worker was attempting to repair a heater outside a 4th grade portable classroom. According to Tahoe Valley Principal Christina Grubbs, the heater malfunctioned, causing smoke inside the unit which is outdoors. She said smoke was drawn into the classroom through the air exchange.

Autumn’s reflections have begun and Lake Tahoe’s forests and wildlife are preparing for the winter. While fall is generally a treasured time of year at the lake, a sense of uneasiness hangs in the crisp air as we brace for the next phase of the COVID crisis.

Summer was record breaking on many fronts. Businesses and agencies with major staff and budget shortages were suddenly required to manage the pandemic, following strict protocols. Trash overflowed on our pristine beaches and roadways. Follow that with more than 8,300 wildfires and 4 million acres burned in California alone.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department encourages the public to remember that everyone is a pedestrian.

The number of pedestrians killed has grown by about 50% over the past decade, with 6,283 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2018, or one traffic-related pedestrian death every 84 minutes.

Excess speed, poor lighting, crossing outside crosswalks and impairment are the main factors that lead to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

Douglas County has released the results of a community survey on the Master Plan Text Amendment conducted in September of 2020. More than 1,500 people took the survey, which asked about Agriculture and Conservation, Economic Development, Growth Management, Land Use, Public Facilities, Services, Recreation, and Public Safety. The Master Plan text provides additional guidance on the long- term development of the County (over the next 10-20 years). The text defines current issues and needs in the community.

As fall approaches, and we think about spending more time inside, devote just a little more time outside to get your yard cleaned up and prepared for winter.

The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) is reminding residents to make preparations now to be ready for fall wildfires and to save time and energy next spring.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - EarthWise Pet Lake Tahoe will be holding its inaugural Howl-O-Ween Party on Saturday, October 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

It's a party for the pets with a photo booth, pet costume party (at 2:30 p.m.), raffle baskets, along with free samples of products and sales at the store.

The event will take place on the lawn outside EarthWise at The Crossing at Tahoe Valley, 2060 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. Masks are required on humans and social distancing is recommended.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews working on replacing the 81-year-old bridge on US50 over Echo Summit are ahead of schedule and the road may reopen before the previous opening date of October 2. The ultra high-performance concrete that connects the seven 96-foot girders has cured and the bridge is at strength.

Wednesday morning the inside concrete barrier rail was poured and the outside concrete barrier rail is planned to be poured on Thursday. Asphalt paving on the approaches to the bridge is planned to start this Sunday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A car being warmed up in the driveway of a Tahoe Sierra home in South Lake Tahoe was stolen at approximately 6:40 a.m. Monday, September 21, and the alleged thief led law enforcement on a chase that ended near Marla Bay in Nevada.

As soon as the call of the stolen car was dispatched, Officer Jason Nixon of the South Lake Tahoe Department (SLTPD) spotted the vehicle, a Lincoln Navigator, and started pursuit. He was joined by other officers and the chase went into Nevada and Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) joined in near Kahle Drive.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After being closed for much of the pandemic, the South Tahoe Recycling Center is going to try reopening once again.

South Tahoe Refuse, operators of the recycling center, say they are determined to keep it open by making sure those using the facility are doing so safely.

The new procedures:

1. Appointments only. No appointments will be made onsite. Call 530.542.8344 to schedule.
2. Masks are required at all times.
3. If you are sick, or have been sick, wait to recycle. If you are sick, so are your recyclables.

Today I stood outside the front entry to South Lake Tahoe's Grocery Outlet to meet and greet our citizens. I happen to enjoy meeting and wishing all a GOOD DAY! Most persons are at Grocery Outlet to shop for food and did not come primarily to discuss politics. I don't push or obstruct a person's comings and goings. I can read from the body language, like when they turn their face to look in the opposite direction or go to the other side of the entry to obviously avoid

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The U.S. Coast Guard has shut down an illegal charter boat operating in Lake Tahoe.

On Sunday, September 7, the crew of a 29-foot response boat from the Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe boarded the 48-foot pleasure craft, Cirque. On board were 19 passengers though the boat was not permitted to have six or more.

They discovered the following violations on the Cirque:

- Violation of 46 C.F.R. 176.100 (a) for not having a valid Certificate of Inspection
- Violation of 46 C.F.R 15.401(a) for not having an individual with an appropriate license

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - This won't be a normal labor Day weekend in Lake Tahoe due to COVID-19 and fire restrictions, but things can still be enjoyed, just differently.

“Before COVID-19, many of us would spend the Labor Day weekend getting together with friends and extended families to enjoy a little down time from work, as is the American tradition. This year, things have changed, but we can still enjoy our holiday weekend safely," said El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be two new members of the South Lake Tahoe City Council after the November 3 election. In the coming weeks the pubic will have chances to hear from the candidates both via zoom, in print and possibly in person. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County will be able to move to the next colored tier on September 21 if COVID-19 cases remain under four cases per day average and test positivity stays below five percent for two consecutive seven-day periods.

The County started off the new color-tiered reopening plan in the Red/Substantial tier due to data from the weeks of August 5-11 and August 12-18.

"The State requires that a County remain in the assigned tier for three weeks

Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar, all members of the Vail Resorts family, will be operating differently during the winter season 2020/21. Vail plans on opening both Heavenly and Northstar on November 20 and Kirkwood on December 4.

Ticket sales, use of season passes and facility uses will all be handled to promote physical distancing and protect the safety of staff and guests.

Join the Suicide Prevention Network in their efforts to end the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. Throughout the month of September, people are encouraged to get outside and walk or hike with friends and family, or on your own. Physical activity and spending time outdoors is good for our mental wellness so this is the perfect time to encourage and empower others to join this movement.

All monies raised benefit the prevention, education and outreach programs at Suicide Prevention Network.

How to Hike for Hope

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Agricultural businesses including those at the popular Apple Hill received instructions this week from El Dorado County on safety precautions and procedures. These were created to ensure operations are safe in light of the COVID-19 pandemic when they open for the 2020 harvest season.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 36,295 acre Loyalton Fire north of Lake Tahoe is filling the Lake Tahoe Basin with smoke this afternoon.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department has been fielding several calls from concerned residents.

The National Weather Service in Reno said the smoke from the new fire in Nevada County most likely isn't the culprit due to the amount of smoke. They said thunderstorms are developing outside of the basin and stirring up the smoke.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as the Eldorado National Forest managers announced last week, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) of the National Forest Service said they too have seen the same record increase in illegal campfires.
