DMV Offers Opportunities for Public Comment on AB60

Californians are invited to attend public hearings being held by the Department of Motor Vehicles on AB60, the state law that directs DMV to issue driver licenses to undocumented California residents.

While no hearings are held in South Lake Tahoe, there will be one in each Southern California and Northern California as well as an on-line telecast.

South Lake Tahoe Neighborhood Service Team Meetings

Another opportunity to be a part of your community is to attend and participate in the City of South Lake Tahoe's Neighborhood Service Team (NST) project.

This team concept was created to improve and preserve neighborhood vitality. They do this by by encouraging public participation and facilitating the interaction between residents and their city government.

City staff hosts meetings at the Recreation and Swim Complex located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The next one will be held on June 10.

Tahoe Regional Plan Being Challenged in Court by Sierra Club Once Again

A coalition of all counties present at the lake along with residents, environmental groups, legislators and business groups were behind the Tahoe Regional Plan and urged its adoption in 2012. Since that time, the Sierra Club and "Friends of the West Shore" have sued (in February 2013) to oppose the plan, lost their motion (April 2014) and now, as of May 7, have filed an appeal to the court's decision to uphold the 2012 Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Seeks Help to Make Lasting Impact in Community

Melody Easton is here to make a difference. Recently tapped as the coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the action oriented Easton has hit the ground running.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant, bringing in $125,000 for each of the next five years to help combat drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of South Lake Tahoe. Once the grant was awarded a coordinator needed to be hired. Easton was hired and the Concordia College graduate and her husband packed up and moved from Portland, Oregon.

It started off as any week at Caesars Tahoe leading up to the Super Bowl. Decorations, parties, betting and hype. Only this year was different. It is January of 1985 and the Super Bowl was being held fairly close to Lake Tahoe at Stanford in Palo Alto. Due to the proximity, a group of VIPs was invited to Caesars Tahoe for a few days of pre-Super Bowl fun before flying to the game with a casino host.

Craigslist Scam Pulled on SnowGlobe Attendees

They knew something was amiss when they couldn't find the home on Saddle Road listed on their vacation rental home contract. A group of 15 college students came to South Lake Tahoe to enjoy the three day SnowGlobe festival, where their time would be spent at the concert, enjoying the town and kicking back in a fully furnished ski cabin. But the lodging situation wasn't as expected since they fell victims to a "craiglist" scam and paid for a rental home that wasn't real.

San Francisco's DJ Galen is headed up the mountain to perform at this year's SnowGlobe. His DJ sets reflect a deep, funky, underground warehouse sound stemming from a synchronous relationship with a multitude of compositions. Heavenly Receives 6-8” of Snow; Kicks Off Snowmaking for November 22 Opening

In anticipation of a November 22, 2013 opening day, Heavenly Mountain Resort has fired up the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and has begun making snow at the top of the Gondola and on California Trail. The resort received its first significant snowfall of the season last night with 6-8 inches of snow overnight on the mountain.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Agreement Paves Way For Eldorado Forest Trail Designations

A compromise agreement reached by conservation groups, off-roaders and three rural counties settles litigation going back to the 1990’s by resolving the status of contentious trails in Northern California’s Eldorado National Forest, according to documents posted today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Under the agreement, some trails and dirt roads would reopen, others would remain closed and still others would begin restoration of past damage.

City of South Lake Tahoe Soliciting Applications for Commissioners

The City Council of the City of South Lake Tahoe is soliciting for applications for appointment to the following city commissions/boards:

The City Council will be appointing two (2) American with Disability (ADA) members to the Building/ADA Board of Appeals. California Health and Safety Code requires that the two (2) ADA members shall be physically handicapped persons. Applicants must reside and be domiciled within the Tahoe Basin portion of El Dorado County. The Building / ADA Board of Appeals Commission meets on an as needed basis.

Arrest made in early morning stabbing death in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe police have arrested a man they believe stabbed a 57-year-old family member to death early Wednesday morning on Wildwood Avenue.

Sean-Paul Andrew MacIntire, 32, of South Lake Tahoe faces first degree murder charges in the stabbing death of Shirley Gordon, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams.

South Lake Tahoe and canine association team up to install agility equipment at Bijou Dog Park

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association are working in partnership to prepare and install the agility equipment at the Bijou Park.

After careful consideration and discussions with all of the City Departments involved in this project it has been decided that the dog agility park will be located across from the dog park instead of inside the current dog park. We believe this is a better option and will be easier to maintain.

Bicyclist runs red light, crashes into skateboarder

On Wednesday, July 17 at around 8:30 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to the intersection of US Highway 50 with Heavenly Village Way to investigate an injury traffic collision.

Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bicycle southbound on US Highway 50 in the center left turn lane. He was approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way. Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his skateboard, and in the company of other pedestrians, while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk.

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe to add ropes courses, zip center to summer choices

League: Regional Plan Litigation Not Good for Lake Tahoe; Opposes Sierra Club's decision to litigate the adopted Regional Plan

The following statement is from Darcie Goodman Collins, PhD, Executive Director, League to Save Lake Tahoe:

“The League is disappointed that litigation has been filed on the regional plan. This is the wrong move for Lake Tahoe. While litigation is a useful tool of last resort, in this case, it will only delay the implementation of any positive environmental benefits contained in Tahoe’s new regional plan.

Former Thunder Valley employee sentenced for embezzlement

U.S. District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. sentenced Erika Michele Carlton, 38, of Roseville, to 18 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for theft from an Indian tribal government, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. Judge England also ordered her to pay $236,050 in restitution.

This case was the product of an investigation by the United States Secret Service and the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Reardon prosecuted the case.

South Shore transit case goes to mediation

It took the judge in the MV Transportation-STATA court case the entire day to finally tell all the parties they are going to mediation. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Gregg Zive on Jan. 17 also ruled on a slew of motions. All parties have until Feb. 19 to let Zive know who the mediator will be and when the sessions will begin.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins

A series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.

Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

Democrats Continue To Outpace Republicans In Nevada Voter Registration

CARSON CITY — Democrats continue to out-register their Republican counterparts, with the latest data from Clark County now showing a more than 100,000 voter advantage as the deadline to participate in the Nov. 6 general election draws ever closer.
Today just before noon the Clark County website, which updates registration totals regularly, showed 346,703 Democrats registered to vote compared to 246,479 for Republicans, a 100,224 advantage.
