SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost two years after their executive director embezzled almost $60,000 from the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS), the nonprofit tasked with helping local pets, is folding after 51 years of serving the South Lake Tahoe community.

A new board of directors had taken several steps, including the sale of their Emerald Bay Road building and laying off of employees, to get LTHS back on their feet but could never get the nonprofit's community standing back.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as people are responding to those left homeless in the devastating Camp Fire in the town of Paradise, concerned citizens are also taking care of pets with those who were evacuated as well as those who have yet to be reunited with their owners.

Several trips have already been made by South Lake Tahoe locals to the camps in areas near Paradise both for humans and pets.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes a tragedy to bring people together, no matter their politics, their income or twitter handle.

Many in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers community remember where they were at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2007 and what happened in the days that followed. The Angora Fire quickly tore through neighborhoods, destroying 251 homes and burning 3,100 acres. While it seems small in comparison with the monster fires of 2017 and 2018, it took everything from so many local families.

The community came together to help their friends and neighbors.

STATELINE, Nev. - Local integrative veterinarian, Carrie Turner of Heal on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline, is offering pet owners even more options for integrative veterinary care. Jenny Jones, physical therapist and certified canine rehabilitation therapist has partnered with Heal to provide more healing options for Lake Tahoe’s dogs and cats.

It's not every day llamas are on the visitor list at a hospital, but that is exactly what happened last Thursday at the Skilled Nursing Center at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

The Novak family of South Lake Tahoe brought their five llamas to meet and mingle with the residents. Tonto, Pico, Krank, Packa and Jafer walked around, letting residents feed and pet them.

This is the second time the Novaks brought their kids and the llamas to Barton. Not only were they a hit with the residents, but the staff was able to squeeze in a few selfies.

Several Lake Tahoe agencies have joined together to remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in the bear being killed, fines and/or jail time for violators. Every year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat and/or are damaging property. In some cases, the animals are euthanized.

South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County will be joining thousands of communities across the United States when they participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration “National Drug Take Back" on Saturday, April 28.

If you were planning on adopting a pet in South Lake Tahoe for a Christmas gift, you're out of luck this year as the last adoptable pet at the El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter has been adopted.

Felix, a five-year-old purebred Bengal, was the last pet left at the shelter on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he had found a new home.

Emptying out the shelter is not uncommon at Christmas as many find the perfect gift among the animals being housed there.

The shelter is located at 1120 Shakori Drive off of State Route 89 in Meyers. Their phone number is (530) 573-7925.

Lake Tahoe is known around the world for its crystal-clear water. For several decades, Tahoe’s clarity, which measured more than 100 feet in 1968, was declining each year because of stormwater pollution from poorly planned development and the lingering effects of historical activities such as cattle grazing and logging.

Dawgs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit focused on providing educational information and resources for responsible pet care, is holding their inaugural Black Tie Gala on Saturday, September 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Lakeside Beach House.

Dogs are encouraged to come in formal wear for the gala which will feature the awarding of a grant to a selected local dog nonprofit, announcement of the 'Who is The Tahoe Dog?' winner, and contests for dogs including Doggy Karaoke, Peanut Butter Lick, Best Black Tie Wear.

Formal attire for dogs only.

The community is invited to take part in a free fun walk, run and ride celebrating the upcoming opening of the last leg of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced.

While the freeway isn't scheduled to open to vehicles until August, NDOT is going to have an opening ceremony to pedestrians, runners and cyclists on Saturday, July 22 at 9:00 a.m. Participants can arrive at any time from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a self-paced experience on the new freeway.

After a challenging winter and spring in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the summer season is upon us. Agencies around Lake Tahoe (U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, California State Parks, California and Nevada Departments of Wildlife) are reminding residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal when living in, or visiting, bear country.

Our local Humane Society needs our help.

Day in and day out our local Humane Society answers the needs of people who have lost their cat or dog or those who have been forced to move to a place where their pets are not allowed. They host spay and neutering clinics to help with over population and other pet inoculation issues. This past Christmas I saw them giving out pet food to those who were too poor to feed their pets.

The Nevada Division of Tourism recognized outstanding members of the state’s rural tourism industry at the VolunTourism Awards Dinner April 27 in Elko. The awards ceremony was a highlight of the state’s annual Rural Roundup conference.

“Tourism is a significant component of rural Nevada economies,” Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director, said. “It is a $2.3 billion industry that continues to grow thanks to the efforts of the tourism professionals in rural Nevada. It is our pleasure to recognize those efforts with this year’s VolunTourism awards.”

As we celebrate Earth Day this April, let’s remember how important environmental stewardship is to the health of Lake Tahoe, and how important our individual actions are.

Over the last two decades, public, private, and nonprofit partners have made significant progress conserving and restoring Lake Tahoe’s environment through the Environmental Improvement Program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of 62-year-old Pamela Suwinsky was found in the Upper Truckee River Sunday morning, about one-third mile north of Highway 50. Divers found her before noon but did not have positive identification until about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Warming temperatures and the arrival of spring bring not only flowers and the appearance of grass to the Lake Tahoe Basin, but they also bring dangerous thin ice.

In an incident Friday, a local woman was out walking two dogs when they ran onto the ice which broke, and both dogs fell into the cold water at Cove East near the Tahoe Keys. With assistance by a nearby paddle boarder the dogs were rescued, but this brings to light how serious the thinning ice can be.

Marshall is looking for a home. He is 6 years old, house-trained and likes other dogs. He can climb fences so must be kept on a leash while outside.

Gambit is this week's Pet of the Week! He is a very sweet and playful 5-year-old Pitty who needs a loving home. Gambit is a big boy and gets excited, so not the best fit for a home with toddlers or infants. He is good with other dogs, but not so good with cats.

Heavenly, last week’s Pet of the Week, is now at her forever home!

If the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast is correct, South Lake Tahoe could see the largest rain/snow weather event since the memorable floods of 1997 and 2005.

Those traveling to South Lake Tahoe, and those that live here, are being warned to be prepared for the storm which is slated to reach the Sierra overnight Saturday and last until Monday.

This week's pet of the week is Lucille, a corn snake. She is looking for a new home!
Lucille is about three feet long and eats frozen or thawed mice.

If you adopt Lucille you get her three foot tank with lid to take home with, but you'll need lighting and heating equipment. If you wish to adopt her, you must bring the equipment to the shelter with you.

In October, Bread & Broth reached the 27-year milestone for serving meals to the Lake Tahoe South Shore community! Currently, Bread & Broth serves a full-course ‘Monday Meal’ at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall and a soup and simple entrée at ‘Second Serving’ at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church on Fridays. These two weekly meals and the food ‘give away’ bags distributed at the meals are supported by generous stores, businesses and restaurants who have donated food, beverages and soups to our program throughout the past year.
