Entries are open now for the second annual Lake Tahoe WordWave One-Act Play Competition. “WordWave, A Festival of Story at Lake Tahoe,” will return Oct. 21-23 to the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Winners of the play competition receive a $500 cash prize and the chance to see their work directed and produced as a staged reading on the historic Boathouse Theatre stage.

The very popular Sports Medicine program at South Tahoe High School just got a new counterpart, a Strength and Conditioning program and center. While Sports Med teaches students how to help athletes after injuries occur, the strength and conditioning program will teach students how to train in a way to prevent injuries.

At Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting, the board voted 4-1 to add the Strength & Conditioning center with accompanying classes at STHS.

And the Oscar goes to......It's that time of year again folks, the Super Bowl of the motion picture industry known as the Academy Awards. This year promises to be what I think will be an exciting one in part because of its host: comedian Chris Rock. Talk about perfect timing, huh? First the old farts who decide who gets nominated virtually overlooked every African-American contender which sparked not only outcries from those in the acting community but also wanted Chris Rock to boycott the Academy as well (for those who don't know him Chris Rock is black).

The South Tahoe Police Activities League (STPAL) would like to extend a thank you to the many community members, organizations and volunteers that made it possible to offer positive alternative activities to the youth of South Lake Tahoe this past summer.

STPAL reached over 60 local middle school-aged kids with the opportunity to learn lifelong skills in mountain biking, skateboarding, and golf alongside positive adult role models.

The inaugural Winter Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and will feature stocking stuffers, gifts for Hanukkah and Christmas, and small prizes for attending. Food will be offered for sale by Seniors, Inc. The Senior Center is located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Citing concern over their role in the new playfield proposal, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has pulled out of the Community Play Consortium Joint Powers Authority.

This past week, the Tahoe Tactical Team expanded its business coaching program to include businesses and entrepreneurs in Douglas County due to a grant from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

Author Michael S. Green will discuss his book Nevada: A History of the Silver State in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, September 27, at 10:00 am.

Green, a leading Nevada historian, provides a detailed survey of the Silver State’s past, from the arrival of the early European explorers, to the predominance of mining in the 1800s, to the rise of world-class tourism in the twentieth century, and more recent attempts to diversify the economy.

Mother Nature hasn't been very nice to Southern Bleachers out of Texas. They are the contractors working on the new football stadium bleachers at South Tahoe High and they missed the August 8 deadline for completion of the project. Summer rains caused several delays but they are now back on track to have the project finished by August 21, a week before the school's first football game.

Karla Huntsman will combine the art of storytelling with her talent as a musician, in a performance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 26, at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Making meaning through story and theater activities has been Karla Huntsman’s life work. Huntsman believes in the power of storytelling to infuse life, joy, connection with self, and connection with others no matter the age of the listener. She sings, plays guitar, autoharp, washboard and djembe drum as part of her storytelling performances.

The El Dorado County Commission on Aging is actively recruiting to fill one vacancy. The Commission plays a very important advisory role to both the Area Agency on Aging and the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on matters concerning senior residents. TahoeChamber has endorsed seven candidates for the upcoming election that best portray the values and abilities necessary to serve the South Shore business community. As directed by the TahoeChamber Board of Directors, the TahoeChamber Candidate Endorsement Committee (TC-CEC) used the pillars of the Chamber’s adopted Tahoe Future A South Shore Community Vision 2020 as the foundational criteria for evaluating candidates. What started off as a leisurely 90 minute cruise on the Tahoe Queen turned into quite the adventure for passengers on board Monday afternoon.

The boat was about 30 minutes into its Emerald Bay cruise when it became stuck on a sandbar. At about 3:30 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Department received a call that the Tahoe Queen was stuck off the Regan Beach shore. It is not known at this time why emergency personnel weren't called to the scene until 90 minutes after the Tahoe Queen got stuck.

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team is headed to the Nevada State Division 1-A Tournament May 22-24 after taking 2nd place in the Northern Championships Saturday.

Friday's Northern Nevada Tournament action saw South Tahoe beat Number 1 seed Elko in the morning game, followed by Fallon beating Spring Creek in the afternoon and South Tahoe losing to the Fallon team in the nightcap.

South Tahoe had the morning game again on Saturday, in which they beat Spring Creek by a score of 10-8.

The Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College presents the fantasy/adventure Still Life With Iris March 14-23 in the Duke Theatre. Written by Steven Dietz, this award-winning play chronicles a young girl’s quest to regain her memory, her past, and with them, her home.

The Fresh Ketch Restaurant and Bar is home to one of the longest-running continuous jazz venues in Northern California, every Friday with the New World Jazz Project.
