Vacation home rentals are an everyday part of life in South Lake Tahoe, though during weekends and holiday periods their impact is much more noticeable. With the large number of visitors "living" in the area neighborhoods next to full time residents their impact has created tension over noise, trash and parking issues.

In the City limits there are currently 1,574 houses that have a permit to be operated as a vacation home. In comparison there are about 15-20% that number in vacation cities Santa Cruz and Napa.

With marijuana now legal in many states, issues are arising that may have been overlooked in the eagerness to make marijuana legal.

Marijuana (cannabis) candies are hitting the market like a storm, and more people are now ending up in the E.R., or even dead, after ingesting them as well as brownies and cookies made from cannabis.

Many South Lake Tahoe residents find themselves dreading weekends, especially during ski season and the summer. Why you may ask? Because of the throngs of people headed for the vacation rental homes in their neighborhoods.

The list of people against California's Proposition 47 grew today with the addition of El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Sheriff John D'Agostini and County Supervisors joining the fight against what has been touted "The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act."

There are an estimated 500 unpermitted, illegal marijuana grow houses on the South Shore according to local law enforcement. In the city limits, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler estimates there are 300 houses where marijuana is growing illegally with another 200 in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore according to SLEDNET’s Matt Underhill. (SLEDNET stands for South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team, a joint drug enforcement task force)

American Legion Post 795 will conduct it's annual Patriot's Day ceremony at the Legion Hall at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 11.

The observance honors the safety forces and military members who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 during the terrorist attacks on the United States.

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler and Fire Chief Jeff Meston will speak on the role of emergency personnel on that day, and on the sacrifices they made.

The public is welcome to attend; light refreshments will be served after the service.

Marijuana is a major concern for many in our City. As part of the City Code, our City Council provided for a safer community by allowing marijuana grow operations only after a permit is obtained. The permit process provides for a building official to inspect for things like:

1. Safe wiring—adding large number of “grow lights” overburdens conventional electric outlets and can cause fires.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department used Peace Officer Memorial Week to honor a few of their own along with some local citizens on Thursday.

In a ceremony in front of the police station, Police Chief Brian Uhler bestowed the following awards:

- Officer Andy Eissinger received an award for Distinguished Service
- Dispatcher Jillian Broadfoot awarded for Meritorius Service
- Todd and Zetta Friedel and Cory Escobar received the Citizen Award of Merit
- Explorer Daniel Loyola received the Distinguished Explorer award

Officer Pierre Herring of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has been promoted to Sergeant, it was announced Friday. Police Chief Brian Uhler promoted Herring after a vacancy was created by the retirement of 27 year veteran Sergeant Brad Williams.

It's not every day that a St.Bernard puppy not even six months old is named a city's mascot, but that is what happened this week in South Lake Tahoe.

Thor belongs to SLTPD dispatch supervisor Susan Keast. She recently took Thor to one of the monthly all city employee meetings where he was almost unanimously voted on as the mascot according to Police Chief Brian Uhler. “There was one vote against Thor,” said Chief Uhler. “I don’t see how anyone could vote against that fuzz ball puppy.”

Gangs, drugs, the threat of violence at schools, parents who are not engaged, and a crime rate that is increasing. On a personal level, it has been painful to see my friend Taylor going through this very difficult time with his family. It serves as a reminder about the importance for family members and friends to check in with one another often as they travel and to provide travel plans including departure and expected arrival times as well as the highways and roadways to be taken. A brief phone call or text message while filling up the gas tank or stopping for a break is always a safe practice when driving long distances. The same can be applied to those going on backcountry trips where an itinerary to family and friends — including departure and expected arrival — should be considered mandatory for hikers and campers. — Jeff Munson

SANTA CRUZ - After three weeks of searches on the sides of Highway 101 and surrounding roads in five counties, Taylor Flynn has not given up hope of finding his mother.
Flynn, the 49-year-old publisher of the Tahoe Mountain News in South Lake Tahoe, was one of the last people to see 70-year-old Deanna Brooks before her disappearance Aug. 24.

Authorities have arrested a Carmichael, Calif., man suspected in the 1980 South Lake Tahoe gas station robbery and murder of 16-year-old Richard Swanson.
After nearly 32 years, On March 28, Andrew Sanford, 50, was arrested and booked in the Sacramento County Jail for the alleged murder of Swanson. The robbery and homicide happened on Aug. 14, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at what was then the Shell Gas Station located at the “Y” on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road.
