Forest Service aims for 10-acre prescribed fire at South Shore

If weather conditions hold, about 10 acres will be burned in a prescribed fire today near Mewuk Drive in the South Lake Tahoe area, the U.S. Forest Service reports. Five acres are up for burning across the South Shore near Tahoe City.

Rain and high elevation snow are expected today along with breezy conditions. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. Thursday. Winds will be out of the southwest, 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph this morning and then increasing this afternoon with gusts to 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Prescribed fire plan Wednesday for West Shore Lake Tahoe

A prescribed fire is planned on the west shore of Lake Tahoe in the Meeks Bay area beginning Wednesday. About 30 acres will be burned through the remainder of the week, weather permitting, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews resume prescribed fire operations in the Cold Creek area near South Lake Tahoe, beginning Tuesday, March 19. About one-half an acre is expected for the burn, which will continue through the week if weather permits.

Prescribed fire operations continue on South and East shores of Lake Tahoe

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews continue prescribed fire operations near Spooner Summit beginning Monday. Crews expect to burn approximately 40 acres. In addition, operations begin Monday on Tahoe Mountain near Dundee Circle. Crews expect to burn approximately six acres. Operations in both locations may continue through the week, weather and conditions permitting.

Prescribed fires planned for Wednesday around South Lake Tahoe and Angora fire area

Two prescribed fires are planned Wednesday around South Lake Tahoe near the intersection of Pioneer Trail and Al Tahoe Boulevard and along a portion of the Angora fire burn area, the U.S. Forest Service announced.

Fuels management crews expect to burn about nine acres, weather permitting. In addition, operations will begin in the Angora Fire area near Pyramid Circle. Crews expect to burn approximately 10 to 15 acres, weather permitting. Operations in both locations will continue through the week as conditions allow.

Smoke from prescribed fire impacts East Shore of Lake Tahoe

The U.S. Forest Service reports the Glenbrook area along the east shore of Lake Tahoe is getting some of the smoke from two days of a prescribed burn operation in the hills above.

Crews burned around 100 acres Tuesday with about 35 acres remaining today. Much of the smoke from Tuesday's burning wound up in Carson City and Carson Valley. Today, the smoke is instead making its way across the east shore of the lake, the Forest Service reports.

Smoky conditions are expected to last through Wednesday into the night with anticipated clearing Thursday.

Large-scale Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations next week at Glenbrook

About 135 acres on Lake Tahoe's east shore above Glenbrook is slated for prescribed burning that will begin Tuesday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will burn around a quarter acre, conditions permitting. Across the lake, prescribed burning is also slated for the Bunker Road area near Tahoe City. Both operations are scheduled to last through the day.

Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations continue Thursday at South Shore

Prescribed fire operations in the Spring Creek area near the south end of Lake Tahoe will begin Thursday, Nov. 1. The Forest Service says crews expect to burn three acres Thursday and three acres on Friday, conditions permitting.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will begin prescribed fire operations in the Timberland area on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe Tuesday, Oct. 23. Crews anticipate burning three to 10 acres per day, for a total of 10 to 20 acres, conditions permitting.

Nevada early voting begins in Stateline

Early voting for the general election in Nevada begins today. Lake Tahoe voters living in Douglas County can cast their votes at the county's Stateline Kahle Community Center offices at 175 Hwy 50. According to the Douglas County Clerk, early voting at Stateline will continue today to 4 p.m. again on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Chipmunk tests positive for plague, Forest Service issues warning for South Shore Lake Tahoe

Visitors to recreation sites around South Lake Tahoe should to take precautions against the bubonic plague after a chipmunk found at Taylor Creek Visitor Center tested positive for the disease, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit reports.
The California Department of Public Health has recommended the Forest Service and its concessionaire post warning signage in the area of Taylor Creek Visitor Center, the Tallac Historic Site, and Camp Richardson Resort explaining how the disease is transmitted, the symptoms and how to prevent infection. The Forest Service is advising its staff and visitors to report any sick or dead animals immediately.

Former South Lake Tahoe pot club owner out of jail after arrest

The former pot club owner who prosecutors say bribed a South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember is now getting out of jail - 12 days after his arrest. A judge gave Gino DiMatteo clearance Wednesday to post $100,000 after proof was presented the money will not come from illegal activities.
Prosecutors were also supposed to publicly present basic evidence for the first time Wednesday on the charges against DiMatteo, but the defense team asked that portion of the hearing be pushed back so they have more time to prepare an argument.
